2002 Birthday Honours[edit]

Thank you for very good work on the 2002 Birthday Honours. I added the appropriate WikiProject templates with ratings to this list, and I observed many problems with Birthday Honours and other UK honors lists, way beyond my ability or time to correct. If you look at other articles in the categories, you will find more to do. Keep up the good work. --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:43, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, and thank you for your edits to 2013 New Year Honours. However, you have removed a great deal of the standard formatting from these that I did, putting it out of alignment with our established way that we write this and other Honours lists (relevant salutations and PNLs outside of the link, adding a comma between PNLs, and using full names). Would you be terribly put-out if I fix it up to how we normally keep these?

James F. (talk) 01:29, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! There seems to be a variety of formats across the various honours lists, so any attempt to standardize is fantastic!
Paora (talk) 01:48, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent; will get on with it. Agree that we should probably codify these into one standard, and then try to standardise the existing lists, but the amount of effort will be a bit extreme…

King George V Silver Jubilee Medal[edit]

Can I suggest that you use the following citation for this award?

I suggest the following changes:

 • leave out name="EP", as it's unlikely to be referenced again.
 • add |volume=CXIX |issue=105, as this should be part of the citation
 • use newspaper=The Evening Post, as it's sourced from a newspaper, and that might as well be wikilinked

This is what it produces: original[1] and modified.[2]

Please can you cite a reference for Michael Baigent's birth name being Michael Barry Meehan. Thanks. Dickie birdie (talk) 15:54, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As per the reference in the article ("Obituaries" (PDF). The Bulletin. Nelson College: 15. December 2013.), Baigent was known as Michael B Meehan while at Nelson College. 2014 Birthday Honours[edit]

Good evening, I really would like you to explain why you added the 'residences' and removed some of the post-nom templates. The residents were left out for a reason and I do not see why the post-nom templates were removed, some were kept but changed to an inferior template. Such mass changes should really be discussed before hand. Nford24 (PE121 Personnel Request Form) 12:49, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy to explain my edits.
 1. The places of residence of the added, as per the published honours lists, for consistency as they are listed for the New Zealand recipients on the previous lists on Wikipedia - e.g. see 2014 New Year Honours#New Zealand. As far as I am aware, no objection has previously been raised about including the residences of those honoured. Thus not sure what would be the problem with adding this information. You stated that the residents [sic] were left out for a reason, but unhelpfully did not explain what that reason was, so it is difficult to discuss this further.
 2. The post-nom templates were removed, as noted in my edit summary, to remove multiple linking of the same postnominals, as per the WP Manual of Style – see WP:REPEATLINK.

Hi Paora,

On the article, Frederick William Hilgendorf, you stated that DNZB establishes notability. Can you send me the page that indicates that? Also, the Demonym for New Zealand is -er. So my edit about that should not be incorrect. Robert4565 (talk) 17:54, 19 June 2014 (UTC) It can also be seen on this page: New Zealander|. Robert4565 (talk) 17:56, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the demonym for New Zealand is New Zealander, but, as per the list of adjectival and demonymic forms for countries and nations, the adjectival is New Zealand. So, it could be said that Hilgendorf was a New Zealander, or that Hilgendorf was a New Zealand teacher, but NOT that he is was a New Zealander teacher. On the question of notability of New Zealanders, and whether an entry in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography establishes notability, refer to Wikipedia:Notability (New Zealand people) and the associated talk page. Patsy Reddy[edit]

I added Template:NZ-cats to Patsy Reddy to manage Categories which you removed however I don't understand your reasoning, why did you remove template nz-cats?

My intention was to manage categories using the template.

@Sinesurfer: — Per WP:TEMPLATECAT, "it is recommended that articles not be placed in ordinary content categories using templates in this way." There are many reasons for this – see WP:TEMPLATECAT. Paora (talk) 09:59, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How interesting; I never knew this. Why then have that template in the first instance? Schwede66 16:45, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good question! Paora (talk) 20:43, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed it is strange. A woman appointed a GNZM would be both a Category:Dames Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and a Category:New Zealand dames. The concerns about non-article pages may get added to the category are addressed by using Template:nz instead of nz-cats for lists and sort keys are unrelated to these articles.
Problem
 1. By removing nz-cats there are now only 4 pages in Category:New Zealand dames instead of 38 so have to manually add the missing pages (which is the reason we use nz-cats) and
 2. This behaviour ignores the other 95 Pages that link to "Template:Post-nominals/NZL-cats" where this is not a problem.
Your thoughts?

Copy-paste move of Elias Scheres[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Elias Sheres a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Elias Scheres. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. I've tagged the page with histmerge, so an admin will perform the merge soon. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 22:04, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I created a category to list London Gazette supplements so that I could analyse which ones link to supplements > 1. The article in it are listed by number order. So at the Norma Williams is first on the list because it lists a supplement no. 43] (dated April 22, 1666). You added the the template to the article on 14 June 2015. Copying within Wikipedia[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from some article into 2012 Birthday Honours (New Zealand). While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted copied template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. Sir William Perry[edit]

Hi Paora, there were two men of this name, I can remember meeting both in the 1950s. You've mixed up the Wellington solicitor with the Wairarapa sheep breeder. Don't know why the Wellington man got his knighthood, the rest of the article looks to me to be about the sheep breeder (1863-1956) who got his knighthood in the New Year's honours in 1933.[1] Are you able to sort the two men out? I suppose the solicitor ranks as notable by being given the 1946 knighthood? regards, Eddaido (talk) 08:42, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the marriage of the solicitor's parents[2] and the notice of his birth[3] in Goldsborough on the West Coast (I think). He seems to have been his mother's only child (of that marriage). Don't know which source has the right date of birth. The sheep breeder is likely to have been born in the Wairarapa. Eddaido (talk) 09:23, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ernest Booth article[edit]

Hi there Paora, I was reviewing the new articles on project rugby union and saw your article on Ernest Booth. Please be aware this person already has a wikipedia article under the title Ernie Booth. The older article only has one reference so yours is much better but obviously these need merging and a re-direct on one of the titles. Thanks Skeene88 (talk) 20:22, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Skeene88: Thanks for that. The older article under Ernie Booth hadn't been linked from the List of New Zealand national rugby union players, so I missed it when creating Ernest Booth. I see that the two have now been merged, and I have also updated the list page to link directly to Ernie Booth. I'll investigate more fully before creating further new pages for All Blacks in case of similar issues. Paora (talk) 00:38, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Parentheses[edit]

I was taught a parenthesis is a comma with added purpose. Bertie Germ was heavily promoted to children by propaganda from the 1930s on in posters on school walls etc. Bertie Germ unless washed off with soap and water did terrible things to any child and to children's unbrushed teeth. Cooksley was Bert anyway but the anti-social link needed to be avoided too. Regards, Eddaido (talk) 23:50, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Lochore[edit]

"the closure summary does NOT refer to the original size on the page; as 85% was the size at the time of the RFC, 85% is the status quo, and should not be changed without consensus on talk page." What utter drivel. The status quo referred to is the status quo before the RfC: i.e. that the template size remains at 85% but that the original size of the postnoms should not be changed if that was 100%. It is certainly not a charter for fans of the small size to point to the mass addition of the template and say "look, it's 85% now so it should remain at 85% even though the original writer wrote it at 100%"! How on earth would you think this was the case? Never do we mandate stylistic changes to a perfectly acceptable style (as 100% postnoms have been found to be) at the whim of another editor who prefers it, which is what you are advocating. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:31, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Necrothesp: You ask, "How on earth would you think this was the case?" My response is that I carefully read the RFC closure summary, and reviewed the edit history showing that at the time of the RFC and for at least three years prior that the smaller size was used in the article, which led me to the conclusion that the smaller size should be changed only with consensus on the article's talk page, which was neither sought nor achieved. To suggest that I was advocating anything in my edit summary, or that I was acting on a whim, are both incorrect; I was merely following my considered understanding of the recommendation of the RFC closure summary. Paora (talk) 10:15, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say you were acting on a whim. I said that your reading of the RfC conclusion is endorsing changes to perfectly good style on an editor's whim, which cannot be the case as this is not how Wikipedia works. We only change style if it is incorrect, not just because we prefer another. The RfC is essentially saying that the first style used should be continued, as 100% is a perfectly acceptable style. Otherwise it would be endorsing the mass imposition of a different style as happened when a few editors added the postnom template to every article in sight. The criteria of WP:RETAIN should equally apply here. If it ain't incorrect it shouldn't be changed. And that's what editors essentially did by adding the postnom template. I have nothing against the template in principle, but not when it's being used to change one style to another. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:21, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Post-nominals[edit]

Hello Paora. With regards to post-nominals and your removal of the MBE from John Keith McCarthy's article, is there some kind of hierarchy where if a person has a higher-ranked honour, you don't list their other ones? Can you point me to where the hierarchy is, because I've probably made the same error on other articles. Cheers, Number 57 11:00, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Number 57: When an individual is promoted to a higher level of the same Order, as in the case of John Keith McCarthy from Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), then only the post-nominal for the higher level is included. When the appointments are to different Orders, then both are listed, see for example Robert Falla. Paora (talk) 21:37, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks – I assume a KBE outranks a CBE? Cheers, Number 57 21:46, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Number 57: Yes, GBE > KBE / DBE > CBE > OBE > MBE. See Order of the British Empire. Paora (talk) 21:55, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for finishing the work on making the disambiguation page Patrick O'Regan. I got interrupted at home, and by the time I got back to it, you had finished it off. Cheers. --Scott Davis Talk 04:07, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paora. Regarding Reg Douglas, I do not think it is safe to say that Douglas is living just because he does not appear in the New Zealand Death Index. While it makes it more likely, as you note yourself, he could have moved elsewhere and died there. He could have also had a legal name change or just had some other reason why he does not appear (a small percentage of individuals who are known to be deceased on particular dates are missing from the US Social Security Death Index and the French Death Index, so it could happen in NZ too). Another thing to consider is that the New Zealand Olympians Club could not locate him in 2012. None of this means he is deceased for certain, of course, but he is over 90 with no evidence of being alive in many years, so he seems to fit Category:Possibly living people perfectly. Thoughts? Canadian Paul 01:31, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Canadian Paul: It is obviously much easier to prove that something has happened, rather to to prove that it hasn't happened. However, it is clear that Douglas was still living (and most likely in New Zealand) in late 2009, when he was interviewed for an obituary for Bob Parker, his partner at the 1956 Olympics and the 1954 and 1958 British Empire Games. Interestingly, both Parker and Douglas are mentioned in the 2012 article about the search for "lost" Olympic rowers by the New Zealand Olympians Club to which you refer, so not sure how exhaustive their search was given that they weren't aware of Parker's death reported in the New Zealand Herald, the country's largest circulation newspaper, three years earlier. Given that Douglas won three Commonwealth Games medals, including two gold, for New Zealand, I'd expect some sort of obituary or other mention in the media if he had died between 2009 and now. Paora (talk) 02:22, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are probably correct. Sadly, however, Olympic medalists die without receiving any coverage, let alone full obituaries, more often than you would think. So we cannot assume that just absence of evidence is evidence of absence when it comes to them being deceased - that's why we have the possibly living people category in the first place. With that said, a mention in 2009 is probably good enough to qualify for the living people category, so I suppose that it is all academic. Thanks for finding that. Canadian Paul 02:32, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Common Name[edit]

Hi, Paora. I was going to send you a note about an hour ago, to discuss moving his article back, in contrast to your "move" in September 2018. As usual, got caught up in other things, but it is on my notepad of things to do. Your revert on 2007 Birthday Honours (New Zealand) a few minutes ago just moved it up.

Everything that supports the Ross Ferguson page - references, bibliography, news paper clippings, official government announcements, his official abbreviation for Botany citations - shows him as Allan Ross Ferguson or A. R. Ferguson or Allan R. Ferguson. I appreciate that folks who know him personally may well call him Ross all the time, but to the majority of the billions in the world (well, the millions who read Wiki) (well, at least the thousands that read his Wiki article), he appears as one of these variations of Allan Ross Ferguson.

This is in keeping with the direction of WP:COMMONNAME, which gives "J. K. Rowling (not: Joanne Rowling)" as a specific example of "commonly used names in support of recognizability" - her friends may all call her Joanne, but J. K. is the common name for the wider world. Your thoughts? Jmg38 (talk) 12:02, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On the contrary, sources commonly refer to him as Ross Ferguson. Here are just a few to be going on with: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. Paora (talk) 22:17, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info - I appreciate the followup. Ross it is. Jmg38 (talk) 18:07, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard from the Coast #1[edit]

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 6 September: Blackball

Welcome to the West Coast Wikipedian at Large project! This is your first weekly postcard with updates on what's been happening and ideas for things to do. • Yesterday I drove from Nelson to Blackball down the Inangahua River valley, taking plenty of photos (see my uploads), through Lyell, New Creek, Inangahua Junction (sic), Oweka, Rotokahu, Larrys Creek, Cronadun, Waitahu, and Reefton to visit the museum in Blacks Point, then on to Formerly the Blackball Hilton. Lots of these places need an article, improvements, or photos. • Inangahua is actually three localities: Inangahua Landing, Inangahua Junction (munted by the 1968 earthquake), and Inanguahua proper where most people live – the article's a bit confused. • This week I'll be in Greymouth giving a talk to heritage folks and another to tourism operators, and running an edit-a-thon on Saturday. It would be great for people to take a look at the Grey District library system who'll be hosting the edit-a-thon and see what Wikidata coverage is like. Libraries and museums are on the Art page of the project. • I had a really good Afghan in Reefton (right) and realised the article is terrible. Research needed! And more photos, if anyone wants an excuse to bake. • Housekeeping: please do note your contributions on the daily Progress Report: prizes for quality, quantity, and anything else I like. User:Schwede66 has been powering ahead. There's room to add a little more to the To Do list, but I want every red link blue by the end of October – plenty to do already! Thank you all. • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

New Zealand Barnstar of National Merit[edit]

The New Zealand Barnstar of National Merit
It's been a huge project but it's been done. This was the big edit; the last of the New Zealand honours lists has been split off from the main list. And it wasn't just a straight process of splitting the pages, but you tidied up all the bios that linked to each page. That is a jolly good effort worthy of being mentioned on one of the honours lists yourself. Well done!

Sunday 14 September: Greymouth

Hello all from Greymouth! There are now a dozen of you from Australia and New Zealand signed up to help, which is wonderful. • The last week has seem some great work, especially from Schwede66, MurielMary, and DrThneed, busily creating categories, stubs, and some really nice articles like Hokitika Clock Tower • This last week I'll been in Greymouth, and gave a talk to the library staff, spoke to half a dozen tourism operators, and had a great edit-a-thon on Saturday, where the partcipants were so keen they organised another one in two weeks! • Check out Axel's reorganisation of the Greymouth category and see if there are photos that need articles. • The Greymouth article needs work, a gallery of historic buildings, and more references from news media and books. • Plenty of old buildings in the list to work on • Siobhan wants Wikidata for all NZ reserves, and I would like all tracks and walkways in Wikidata too, like the Rapahoe Range Scenic Reserve and Elizabeth Point Walkway – I took a bunch of photos there yesterday • Some of our new articles have been flagged (wrongly) because there weren't enough references yet; not to worry, but help if you can. I'm digging through local archives here for good sources. Here's a Google drive of local news stories by the way. • There'll be lots more photos going up in the next week so watch this space. In the meantime keep an eye on my uploads, photos from History House Museum, and more from the Grey District Library to see of there's something you can use. • Housekeeping: please do remember to jot down your contributions on the daily Progress Report, just so others can see and help out. Thank you all for you hard work! • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

Sunday 20 September: Westport

Hi from Westport! The ridiculously nice weather has largely continued. According to Wikipedia the Holcim cement works is here, but I'm pretty sure it closed in 2016. Work needed on that article! • One result of appearing on Seven Sharp is that Tourism New Zealand and the Glacier tourism folks are now interested in chatting. Watch this space, I may be headed south soon. • MurielMary and DrThneed have been helping with the West Coast artists list, many thanks – I may have more print sources for bios. The Yvonne Rust book is good. • There's been some great teamwork this past week, with Canley and Schwede66 sorting out all the West Coast heritage buildings in Wikidata without photos, and me running round Westport with my camera taking pics of them. • About half the Stewart Nimmo photos are uploaded, and keep an eye on my uploads for more. Look for inventive uses: I added one to the selfie article. • I'll be working on Denniston Plateau, the Westport News, Becky Manawatu, EPIC Westport, the Kawatiri Coastal Trail, Granity, and Barrytown; all help appreciated. • This week I have a few more days at Westport and will do a day trip to Granity, then down to Hokitika on Friday for 10 days to work with the Museum and heritage groups. So do tackle Westport content this week; I can ask the Westport News for clippings if you need more sources. • Housekeeping: add what you do to the daily Progress Report, so we can all see and help! • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

Sunday 27 September: Hokitika

Greetings from sunny Hokitika! The fine weather I've had for the last few weeks finally broke and it's been driving hail and wind today. • Last week in Westport was fun, talking to many local historians and photographers, and the Westport News (rewritten article) • Saturday I ran a workshop in Hokitika, yesterday a second one in Greymouth. One newbie improved the Dave McKenzie (runner) article and squealed when her changes showed up instantly in Google. Another ran out to take photos of the Pioneers' Memorial (right), and Schwede66 created an article that very night • This week I'd love help with Hokitika-area articles: sculptures of Hokitika, buildings of Hokitika, Guy Menzies, Hokitika Guardian (am meeting them tomorrow to get better sources), whitebait (the NZ aspect), Kaniere, Lake Kaniere, pounamu, Lake Mahinapua, Hokitika Gorge, The Luminaries, and the Hokitika River. This is a list brainstormed with the locals at the workshop, heartily recommend doing this. • There are more photos by Stewart Nimmo of Lake Brunner and Reefton (including the artist Alison Hale (Q99304897), who's on our list. • It would be super helpful of somebody to look at the Hokitika area on WikiShootMe and check the locations of rivers, hills, etc against NZ Topo Map or the NZGB Gazetteer. • Dr Thneed wanted a photo through the altar window of St James Church, Franz Josef, and that same day Paora supplied one. Great teamwork, folks – it's been so nice to watch you collaborate. • Housekeeping: keep noting your contributions on the daily Progress Report. Thank you all for your hard work. • Stay warm and dry! — Giantflightlessbirds

Sunday 4 October: Hokitika

Kia ora from Hokitika! Tomorrow I pack up the car and head to Greymouth to present to Development West Coast our previous month's work, before heading south • Yes, Glacier Country are supplying accommodation in south WestlandŌkārito, Franz Josef, and Fox – for the next two weeks. Possibly because I mouthed off to the media that Fox Glacier's entry is so short who would want to stay there? • So this week it's Ōkārito (splitting the article into settlement and lagoon), kōtuku, spoonbills, the West Coast Wildlife Centre (Q99767675), rowi, Franz Josef glacier (and NZ glacier photos in general glacier articles), historic buildings thereabouts, etc • I uploaded lots of Stewart Nimmo photos of the Haast area, and have some Paparoa ones by Jase Blair coming soon. • Pakoire noticed that Fayne Robinson (Q99836010) needs an article – can we collaborate on one? He's def notable and we need more coverage of Māori from the Coast. • Also women: see the Westland women in the WikiProject Hokitika Museum Google doc and Hokitika Museum Google drive. • Last week I wrote or improved articles about Hokitika Museum, Lake Kaniere, History House Museum, Lake Mahinapua, and Westland District Library. Error check, cleanup etc welcome. It's great to be able to work from folders and scrapbooks stuffed full of newspaper clippings! • Housekeeping: Thank you all for collaborating and filling in gaps, especially with historic buildings. Paora has been doing some great work. Please keep letting me know of any photos you need taking on the spot. • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds
Gorgeous Lake Kaniere. Yes, it really does look like this.

Sunday 11 October: Franz Josef

Gidday from Franz Josef/Waiau! Deserted tourist town, everything's a bit pricey, but there are kea circling over the main street which makes up for a lot • I just spent three days in Ōkārito, wrote articles about pakihi and Ōkārito lagoon, and took/was given a lot of photos of Kōtuku and hiking trails. A dearth of printed sources on Ōkārito but there are enough photos and info to make at least sections/galleries for buildings like Donovan's Store (Q79300924), Ōkārito School (Q79303038), and Ōkārito Obelisk (Q79309599) on its article • There are too many photos of Franz Josef glacier! It would be great to make a curated gallery of the most useful ones on its Commons page. Also finding and uploading good photos from DigitalNZ and the Macmillan Brown A. C. Graham Collection would help heaps • Local heritage sites that need articles: the Hendes Gallery, Defiance Hut, Chancellor Hut • I'll be spending Tuesday in the West Coast Wildlife Centre, looking at baby kiwi and improving Haast Tokoeka and Rowi articles • Great to see a new Fayne Robinson article from Pakoire, and Maida Bryant from MurielMary; Paora's been beavering away on lists of mayors • Housekeeping: do reach out to any of the team for a hand if some random editor knocks you back or makes trouble. Don't let them rattle you! We're here to help each other. • Take care and be kind — Giantflightlessbirds
In a few decades the Waiho River bed will be higher than Franz Josef. Won't that be fun!

In the case of Jacinda Ardern, which is the edit of yours I reverted, there are plenty of examples of her being referred to as the 40th prime minister of New Zealand in reliable sources: here are a few to be going on with – [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]. Kia ora koutou from Reefton! • We're in the last few days of the project, so time to wrap up loose ends. • Most of the last week I was based in in Fox Glacier, organising photo uploads from Fox Glacier Guiding of the glacier itself and Chancellor Hut, check them out • I've also photographed hiking trails and worked on articles about the West Coast Wildlife Centre, Lake Gault and Lake Matheson • Here in Reefton I'm improving the article about the town, have found info on the Inangahua County Library for DrThneed, and am writing about the Reefton Distillery • There are photos of all of Reeftons's historic buildings (and I've added a few), but no articles about the Reefton Courthouse or the Reefton School of Mines, and the Reefton Power Station article could do with work • Since I last wrote DrThneed has been hard at work on libraries, there's a nice Donovan's Store article from Gertrude206, much-needed improvements to pounamu by Pakoire, and Paora's been super-industrious with historic buildings but most importantly managed to produce a photo of the giant sandfly of PukekuraHousekeeping: I'm sending out prizes kindly donated by Development West Coast and Friends of Waiuta to those of you who've worked hardest on the project, so if I ask for a postal address that's why. But even if you just signed up to get these postcards, that's fine too! • Thank you all for making a wonderful project work; I've never coordinated a team effort like this, and I think it's potentially a model for other edit-a-thons. Its been great fun. And I hope this has inspired you to keep chipping away, improving the coverage of New Zealand's beautiful West Coast. Ka kite ano, — Giantflightlessbirds

Survey on proposed 2021 Wikimedia Aotearoa conference[edit]

Kia ora, as an editor in New Zealand I wanted to let you know about a survey gathering information for planning a Wikimedia conference in early 2021. Here's the link - it's open til 18 November. Feel free to share it with other editors you know too. Cheers! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/K37CY2B MurielMary (talk) 10:03, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is a placefor the biographies of `n people, focused on their accomplishments, not their hobbies. Iknow you're not a promotional editor, so please do not write like one. DGG ( talk ) 21:54, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Paora, any idea what DGG means by that? Schwede66 23:08, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
DGG is referring to content on Laurie Stevens (industrialist), not Laurie Stevens. The material that I included that is apparently at issue, is the following paragraph, which DGG has twice removed from the article, calling it "irrelevant minor material":

While a student, Stevens represented Auckland University at tennis, and he later served as president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association between 1983 and 1984. He also served as chair of the Auckland Agricultural, Pastoral and Industrial Shows Board, and was a member of the Melanesian Mission Trust Board.[14]

I obviously disagree with DGG's assessment of the material as irrelevant and minor. I certainly see nothing there that could remotely be described as "promotional". Thoughts? Paora (talk) 23:24, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I've just come across that page through NPP. Being president and chair of organisations is obviously not trivial. Schwede66 00:37, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Afds on cricketers[edit]

Hi Paora. I know you do some great work on NZ sportspeople, so you might be interested in a batch of NZ cricketers at AfD. There's about 20 or so, starting here. If any names jump out as possible expansion candidates, or you can do any work whatsoever on any of them, it would be most grateful. No worries if you don't have time and/or interest. Thanks. An introduction to Wikisource, a free repository of digitised out-of-copyright books uploaded and proofread by volunteers, and what this means for New Zealand libraries and museums.

Wikisource, a sister project to Wikipedia, is an online repository of free, out-of-copyright books anyone can read or download. The books have been scanned, transcribed, and proofread by multiple volunteers to create a computer-readable and searchable document. Wikisource can also import books already scanned by the Internet Archive, which includes numerous New Zealand works. Volunteers can help with basic proofreading, verification, and formatting of each others’ work. There’s significant potential for Wikisource as a place to host New Zealand works for free, and enlist the help of an international team of volunteers to transcribe them—see this blog post for an example. Andrew Wooding is a Wikisource admin and has been volunteering with the project for over ten years; he most recently assisted the National Library of Scotland with a COVID lockdown project where staff transcribed nearly 3000 pamphlets from the collection. Andrew is visiting the West Coast and has kindly agreed to give this free seminar for anyone interested.

Article proposal[edit]

Hello, I've considering creating a page and want to know if it meets GNG. Schwede66 recommended I ask you.

It can be found here, if you're interested in giving your thoughts.

Nexus000 (talk) 11:44, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Paora. There is another version of this image here, which I think is slightly better as it doesn't have the line going through his neck (if you zoom in on Trove, the quality is not bad). Although I originally uploaded a small version of it as a non-free image, I have since learnt that it should be out of copyright as it was published in Australia before 1955 (like this one). I wondered whether it might be worth uploading the one from PIM over the file on Commons and adjusting the rationale? There is also another version of it here but I am not sure about the colour of it. Number 57 21:16, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery QSM[edit]

The death notice for Colin Pidgeon (Q106689626) claims that he has had a QSM. I can't find any evidence of that. If you have time, I'd appreciate if you could have a look. Schwede66 19:18, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: I can't find any evidence either, but looks like he may have received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal instead – see here. Paora (talk) 20:34, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. Thanks. Have amended the Wikidata entry. Maybe the grieving relatives got a bit carried away. Schwede66 22:12, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sir Alan Stewart[edit]

Kia ora, re this, I was just trying to fill out the infobox and actually mindlessly copied George Washington, which of course says he was the 1st President of the United States but also gives the "office established". Do you think this is wrong in both cases, or okay on George Washington but not Alan Stewart? Brycehughes (talk) 02:51, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Brycehughes: It would seem to me to be redundant to have the predecessor field saying "office established" when the header says "1st" Whatever of Wherever. In my opinion, it's just adding an extra line to the infobox without adding any addtional information. But I'm not going to die in a ditch over it. Paora (talk) 03:20, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Haha we're so far from the mud. I'll just say it gives a bit more visual meat to a lonely section of the officeholder infobox, which appears a bit sparse if you have only "succeeded by" in a single section; moreover I think there's an argument that it's nicer to have an demonstrated end when you're clicking back through infobox links. I agree with you that it's redundant, but it's also an infobox... redundancy can be the point. I'll revert you, tentatively, but if you revert me back I'll wave the white flag. Brycehughes (talk) 03:38, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll just add, while I'm here, I really appreciate all your work on the NZ articles, as I'm sure many others do as well. Brycehughes (talk) 03:42, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Buck Shelford[edit]

Kia ora, I am wondering if we set up an Honours section on Shelford's page? I ask because I see you have done good work there. I may nip in and add some comment to what you have added, but won't set up another section until I hear back from you. Cheers. Realitylink (talk) 21:41, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1999 New Zealand bravery awards[edit]

My apologies. I missed that it was a direct quote. Thanks for the revert. Truthanado (talk) 15:50, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2020 New Zealand Olympic team[edit]

Hi there, could you please leave it to me to place the navbox? I'm doing a AWB run and it's easier if I do them all as part of that. If you want to work in that space, maybe figure out the Rugby sevens squad; that's missing from the template as the team isn't listed on the New Zealand at the 2020 Summer Olympics page. Schwede66 00:04, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: No worries! Paora (talk) 00:21, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm done, including the two sports that you managed to add. Thanks! Just the archers now, plus a bunch of red links, of course. Schwede66 02:50, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: I think that no archers are being sent by New Zealand despite qualifying two, as they were not deemed likely to finish in the top 16. Paora (talk) 02:53, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

News from the West Coast Task Force

Winter 2021

Kia ora koutou. Here's what we've been up to.
 • Wikisource is going strong: we're currently validating the last pages of Preshaw's Banking Under Difficulties (1888), and have just started Lord's Old Westland (1939). Both of these are pivotal books of West Coast history, and I'm really pleased we'll been able to make them available for the first time ever as library e-books. Wikisource ☞
 • Over August and September we're focussing on the natural history of the West Coast. We're trying to get reasonable articles and photos for all the Coast's lizard species, like the Kapitia skink, with the help of DOC. There's plenty to do on endangered species like the Westland Petrel, and localities like the Open Bay Islands, home to two endangered lizards and an endangered leech, I kid you not. Natural History ☞
 • Work on West Coast artists with the help of the Left Bank Art Gallery has been going well; artists like Marilyn Rea-Menzies and Brent Trolle have cleared copyrights on some of their art so we can add a gallery to their pages. I'm running a workshop on copyright for artists and photographers in Greymouth on August 28th, and it really helps to have example pages like these to show off. Arts ☞
 • Meetups: Grey District Library, Greymouth, Sat 28 Aug 10:00 am • Westland District Library, Hoikitika, Sat 4 Sep 1:00 pm • Grey District Library, Greymouth, Sat 25 Sep 10:00 am • Westland District Library, Hoikitika, Sat 16 Oct 1:00 pm

Diana Hill (scientist)[edit]

Thanks for tidying up Diana Hill (scientist). Just wondering, I had a hatnote to link the page to Diana Hill the miniaturist, which I see you removed. Is there something about the use of these I don't understand? I have tended to use them where there are two people with the same name (whereas if there were more I would create a disambiguation page). Is that not right? Seeking to understand so I don't go putting more of them where they don't belong! Thanks. DrThneed (talk) 10:43, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DrThneed: Hatnotes are not required when the subject is not ambiguous, per Wikipedia:Hatnote. Thus, there should be a hatnote mentioning the scientist on the miniaturist's page, Diana Hill, but a hatnote is not necessary on the scientist's page, Diana Hill (scientist), because that one is disambiguated. Paora (talk) 10:48, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see! I regret that was not obvious to me! Thanks. DrThneed (talk) 11:00, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for your edit. I am not so sure about including the DOB. See Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Presumption in favor of privacy, although I admit that this is far from clear and that the information on her birthdate is available in one of the cited sources. You may also like to look at Vania Wolfgramm, Tracy Atiga, and Samantha Winders, which I uploaded in the last couple of days. Roundtheworld (talk) 10:25, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Roundtheworld: I don't think that we are contravening the BLP policy by using Fakahokotau's date of birth as given on her profile on the official Netball New Zealand website, which is already listed in the references for the article. Similarly for other Silver Ferns where their date of birth is listed by Netball New Zealand. Paora (talk) 08:51, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

West Coast Task Force 2[edit]

News from the West Coast Task Force

Summer 2021–22

Kia ora koutou. Here's what's happening.
 • I gave a presentation and workshop about Wikisource at the LIANZA librarians conference in November, and there was quite a bit of interest. We finished proofreading Old Westland (1939), released it into the library catalogue as a e-book, and it was almost immediately borrowed by 15 people (the physical book had only gone out three times in the last few years). Newly-uploaded books needing work are George Marriner's The Kea: a New Zealand Problem, the 1886 edition of Rambles on the Golden Coast of New Zealand, and Horatio Robley's Pounamu: notes on New Zealand greenstone. Wikisource ☞
 • With the help of the Left Bank Art Gallery we've been focussing on pounamu (greenstone) carving and hei tiki over the last month, with the goal of negotiating with copyright holders to get decent photos of different types of stone and some carving styles. There is lots to do! Let me know if you're keen to help with pounamu. Arts ☞
 • User:Paora has made some great improvements to Lake Wahapo, which made me wonder if there was interest in a small project in the New Year to improve articles on the West Coast's lakes and rivers.
 • Meetups: we had a small Wikiblitz at Byte Digital Hub in Greymouth on Sat 4 Dec, which improved the Greymouth article and led to the creation of Floods in Greymouth • There'll be an online meetup of the West Coast Task Force, Sat 15 Jan 1pm (link to join). • In February we're planning a Wikiblitz on the Westland Petrel and the Barrytown Flats, to take place somewhere around Punakaiki – watch this space.

DYK for Mary Earle[edit]

On 15 December 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mary Earle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Mary Earle (pictured) was born near Ben Nevis, and although she became a professor of food technology in New Zealand, she never forgot her Scottish roots? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mary Earle. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mary Earle), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK for Abel Tasman Monument[edit]

On 4 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Abel Tasman Monument, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that more than 20 of Ernst Plischke's designs for the Abel Tasman Monument (pictured) in New Zealand's Tarakohe were rejected before he designed a tall, tapering column referencing the Greek funerary stele? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Abel Tasman Monument. Kia ora Paora, hope you're keeping well. Thanks so much for your edits on Grace's article, particularly the addition of her opinion on damehoods; I tried to find a better source explaining why she declined redesignation but my Googling skills failed me, so much appreciated!

Also just to draw your attention to a comment made by the GA reviewer in relation to the macrons in quotations, in case you didn't see it: Talk:Patricia Grace/GA1. They've basically said they don't agree with that interpretation of the MOS, but didn't mind either way. I don't much mind either, to be honest, but thought you might be interested to see their thoughts. :) Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 08:39, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chocmilk03: I guess it depends how you regard it as an issue of typographic conformity, per MOS:CONFORM, or follow the principle of minimal change and retain dialectal and archaic spellings, per MOS:QUOTE. I generally err on the side of retaining the spelling, including orthography, of the original text, but not hugely bothered either way either. Well done on getting the article to GA status! Michelle Kelly[edit]

Hi @Paora:. I have been working on Michelle Kelly. I was hoping you might work your magic on her as you did so superbly for Jane Fromont. The earliest publication of hers that I have found is her Ph.D from Auckland, and the dedication makes it likely that she is indeed a New Zealander. (I have been working hard on her sponges and her articles in wikidata, so there is no doubt about her notability.) But tracing her movements via her affiliations makes it very hard for any reader. An invitation to help the West Coast Wikipedian at Large[edit]

News from the West Coast

Development West Coast have kindly agreed to support another short Wikipedian at Large contract on the West Coast, to cover areas that were missed the first time around: Lake Brunner, Te Wahipounamu, Ōpārara Arches, and Punakaiki. From June 20th to August 26th I'll be improving articles, Wikidata, and photo collections on these areas, and would love some help. I'm inviting you to sign up on the project page; there'll be a fortnightly "postcards from the Coast" of to-dos and updates, and prizes for the most and best contributions by volunteers. Tereza's table of contents problem[edit]

It turns out that Tereza's issue with tables of contents that she mentioned at the Auckland Wiki meet-up is a stylistic difference. On Portuguese Wikipedia, tables of contents are generated on the left-hand sidebar instead of underneath the lede. There seems to be a way to generate the table in-article (e.g. Jeanine Áñez), but I couldn't see any wikiscript that would trigger this in the article. --Prosperosity (talk) 00:53, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you enjoy helping improve coverage of the beautiful country of Te Tai Poutini over the next ten weeks • First, bookmark the 2022 project page to keep up with which topics we're working on • For questions and suggestions, use the project Talk page (and watchlist it) • There's a Useful tools section on the project page that's worth checking out • We're doing something different this year: instead of the daily reporting of 2020, we're compiling a weekly report: just edit the Weekly Progress page with what you did when you did it, no pressure to do something every day! • There are prizes for both quantity and quality • Online training for newbie editors (Mon 27 Jun) and Commons contributors (Mon 4 Jul)—see the About page and feel free to recruit friends • The focus for the next couple of weeks is Punakaiki: the pancake rocks (which need their own article?), Paparoa Track (a stub with no photos!), Cave Creek (much work needed, and photos of the track, creek, and memorial), and Barrytown, subject of a Wikiblitz but still with plenty to do • I'll be visiting the Punakaiki area and hopefully presenting on Wikipedia to the DOC team around the 29–30 June (depending on weather), and will take photos of tracks, river, points, islands, and caves–requests taken • Note: there's a West Coast Reptiles Wikiblitz on Sunday 3 July if you want to help improve articles about native lizards • Right, that's plenty! Maybe people would be interested in an online team chat? I could post a Doodle poll… • So looking forward to working with you all on this! • Mānawatia a Matariki, — Giantflightlessbirds

Tuesday 5 July, 2022

Kia ora koutou and thank you all for your hard work over the last couple of weeks! We've had a cold snap here on the Coast, but at least the rain's slackened off and I've been able to get out on the blue sunny days and take snapshots • Schwede66 has been sorting out the Paparoa Range, cleaning up mountain wikidata, and expanding the Pororari River • We have a new article about the Truman Track, and a great photo selection for Cave Creek • Our hardest worker has been Marshalc, creating new articles on the Pancake Rocks, Bullock Creek, and the Inland Pack Track amongst others • I took a field trip to Punakaiki and sorted out the Wikidata and photos for every scenic spot between the Strongman Mine Memorial (Q112859334) and Hatters Bay (Q32217346) • If you're still thinking about helping, we could do with expanding the Punakaiki article, and sorting the best Pancake Rocks photos into a Commons gallery • Greymouth photographer Jase Blair donated some beautiful photos of Paparoa National Park which need using • The Avatar moth from Denniston Plateau (with its newly-improved article) will be RNZ's Critter of the Week on Friday • New resource: Mark Pickering's book The Coastal Journey (2010) (Q112841717) is free to download and a great reference • This coming weekend I'm off to Moana on Lake Brunner (to photograph the bays, walks, and especially the Kotuku Model Bungalow (those are all Start-quality icons, hint hint) • Check out the Project page to see jobs there are to do, and how you can help out! Tuesday 19 July, 2022

Kia ora koutou and once again thank you for all your mahi over the last fortnight • We've been working on articles on the Lake Brunner area; the lake's article is looking heaps better, and it's in the queue for DYK • Marshelec, Swede66, and Turnagra have been the putting in lots of effort, with new articles on the Croesus Track, Mount Te Kinga, and the Pike19 Memorial Track amongst others • We've rescued lots of great photos from Flickr and other public collections • But these weren't enough: I did two field trips to photograph up and down the Punakaiki coast, and halfway around the Arnold Valley and Lake Brunner; numerous new Commons categories and Wikidata images resulted • Progress at the lake was derailed by having to be filmed for the evening news, editing Wikipedia in the open air while being attacked by sandflies (our project mascot is well chosen) • Over the next two weeks the focus shifts to Karamea, all the caves and walks of the Ōpārara Basin, and the Heaphy Track • There is plenty to do: the Wangapeka Track, Honeycomb Hill Cave, and Kahurangi National Park need massive work, so I'm stoked that Marshall and Lyn are joining me for a few days this weekend at Karamea to help • This is an area that critically relies on tourism, and it's embarassing the coverage is so bad in Wikipedia • Check out the Project page to see jobs there are to do, and how you can help out! Kia ora koutou and thanks for helping with this project • It's been a busy fortnight: I visited Karamea with Marshall and Lyn, and we spent the day on the Fenian Track, which now has its own article and over 100 photos of the valley, the local flora and fauna, and the three caves we explored • Yes, there were cave wētā and spiders • I also got to meet with local historians, photographers, and nature buffs who are keen to share photos and deluged me with print materials • The double hook featuring the Paparoa Track and the Pororari River articles appeared in DYK on 25 July and they got 3000 readers between them, but the accompanying DOC video clip got over 400,000 views! • The newly-created Copland Track article was in DYK the next day, and Lake Brunner will feature soon • Great work, everyone • Coming up: Te Wahipounamu and the Haast Pass—I'll be spending three days exploring and photographing the area, and could definitely do with help fleshing out the skeletal coverage of the lakes, localities, rivers, and wetlands of that beautiful part of the world • Check out the Project page to see the north-to-south list for South Westland, and pick something to work on; ask me for a job if you don't have one! Postcard from the West Coast

Monday 15 Aug, 2022

Kia ora koutou; we're coming up to the home stretch! • I got back from South Westland with about 400 photos to upload and categorise into Commons • The DOC team down there are very excited about our project; they're busy reopening the Haast-Paringa Cattle Track with a new swingbridge, and I promised we would create an article with photos of all the huts • Archives New Zealand have a wonderful collection of tourist publicity photos on DigitalNZ; you could search them for pics of West Coast places for articles (see the ones I used in Pleasant Flat) • There's still plenty to do over the last fortnight of the project—if you could find some time to pick one of the biggest gaps and have a go at filling it, that would be great • in Haast, we need articles on Okuru (currently a redirect), Hannahs Clearing, the Roaring Billy and Thunder Creek Falls, and Ship Creek; I have photos of all of them • You could also check back through the Punakaiki, Lake Brunner, and North Westland lists for anything that needs expanding • In other news, I'm running an online workshop 7 pm August 23rd on Adding Photos to Commons; enrolment's free, share with any keen photographers you know • We're also having a Wikiblitz this coming Sunday to try to improve the articles about West Coast reptiles, and could use help • Thank you for all your hard work; I'd like to organise an online meetup on Zoom at the end of the project to look back at what we've done and have a think about next steps; will send some possible times • Ka kite ano. — Giantflightlessbirds

Monday 29 Aug, 2022

Kia ora koutou; well, it's time to wrap up this project • What a wonderful and short ten weeks it's been; I've really appreciated all the mahi people have put into improving articles about the West Coast • There's a summary of what we've managed to achieve in the final report • Briefly: 24 new articles, 5 of them in DYK, 974 edits to 193 articles, adding 73,800 words and 653 citations • We uploaded 1126 photos into numerous new Commons categories • Standouts for me were Schwede66's sorting out all the Paparoa mountains named after famous scientists, Marshelec's work on Karamea and Bullock Creek, and Turnagra creating the Copland Track article • There are small prizes going out to those three, but I also want to acknowledge all the effort of Paora, Chocmilk03, and Gertrude206—great stuff • I'm about to head off to Europe for a month, to attend the Wikimedia Summit and learn what European Wikipedians are up to, but despite time zones would like to have an online catchup with participants soon • Thank you again for all your hard work; ka kite ano and I hope we'll have another bash at the West Coast again soon. Helen Winkelmann[edit]

Nice catch on the Helen Winkelmann edit - I didn't think to double check. Nauseous Man (talk) 09:31, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nauseous Man: Thanks. I think there's a wider issue with trying to list all of the dates (particularly in the infobox) that Winkelmann acts as administrator. There never seems to be any official announcement, so there is generally a bit of guesswork, particularly when there are no events that the administrator is involved in during the period that they are in the role. Kiro was overseas in July for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, but I haven't seen anything about whether it was Winkelmann or another senior Supreme Court justice who was administrator then. Similarly in early September when Kiro visited Samoa. Then during the latest trip for the Queen's funeral, Glazebrook was apparently administrator for the first part of the absence, then Winkelmann was in the role from the middle of 20 September. We don't list all the times that the deputy prime minister is acting prime minister in his infobox, so would question the need to do the same when the administrator is "acting governor-general". Kieran Wright[edit]

Hello Paora,

I've tried to create a disambiguation page for "Kieran Wright", but stuffed that up. I wonder if you'd mind creating one? (You might recall you'd made a DAB page for "Chris Moller" a week or so ago ... that was down to me as well!) I'm still on a learning curve regarding editing. Am getting better at creating pages, than I am dealing with other Wikipedia tweaks. FYI - Kieran Wright (the artist) is being profiled on "Sunday" on TVNZ 1, 5th March 2023. Thanks for your help. Cheers, Paul

Aerohydro (talk) 03:38, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No stuff up detected. What you've done so far is good. You now need to edit Kieran Wright and turn it into a disambiguation page. Maybe the automatic redirect is what throws you; in that case, try this link in that case, User:Aerohydro. Schwede66 04:10, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Schwede66,
Thanks for your reply, and for pointing me to the right - ahem - Wright page. And, yes, it was the automatic redirect that was foiling my earlier efforts. Have now edited it, so that it's now a disambiguation page.
BTW, I am part of an informal Wikipedia group at the Ara Institute of Canterbury, along with MurielMary, Podzemnik, and KiwiKA. During our monthly meet-ups, we often discuss all the work that you and Paora do. Cheers, Paul

Postcard from the West Coast

Wednesday 20 Sep, 2023

Kia ora koutou; so good to be a Wikipedian at Large on the West Coast again. • I've been setting up visits and field photography trips to Karamea (Oct 15), Fox Glacier (Oct 2), and Whataroa (Oct 9), and working through the typewritten Whataroa South Westland: Centennial Report 1879–1979 • Great work from Panamitsu creating the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve article, and Paora with Gerhard Mueller and Kere Tutoko (Q122695369). Prosperosity created Wikidata items and Commons categories for most of Hokitika's public sculpture, and I added over 100 photos and more items • Hoping to tag along on a kōtuku tour, but I'm also approaching photographers who've taken good pics of the colony about releasing their work for Commons • We should improve the kōtuku and Waitangiroto River articles with journal articles—and the Whataroa River and Waitangitāhuna River articles could do with a tidy up (there's a great article in Tane about how the former split in two, and the implications for the Waitangiroto) • Coming up are the Glacier Country tourism articles: can I recommend Lynley Hargreaves' new book Vanishing Ice as a reference? • Gillespies Beach Beginnings is recently transcribed and available in Wikisource as well • Keep at it folks, and I'll drop you a line in a week and a bit. — Giantflightlessbirds

Postcard from the West Coast

Wednesday 8 Nov, 2023

A bit of a gap since the last postcard, but what a great time we've had with the Wikipedian at Large project in the interim • The highlight has been having Marshall and Lyn join me on the West Coast for a few days, visiting Fox Glacier and Whataroa • We now have good photo collections for the newly-created Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, and a a much improved article with galler • The Whataroa article has been improved with local history and links to the White Herons • We also have much better coverage of Fox Glacier, including new Ngāi Tahu viewing place Te Kopikopiko o te Waka, and photos of Te Weheka Walkway/Cycleway and the South Side Walkway/Cycleway • Could I get you all to check back through your contributions and add anything extra you've done to the [Progress page as we wrap up • Also—I'm hosting a catch-up meeting on Sunday November 12, 2:30 pm, online at my Whereby chat room. This is a chance to go over anything you'd still like to see improved, talk about how the project went and possibilities for future ones, and announce winners of prizes for most or best contributions. Drop me a line at mike@rove.wiki if you can make it (or can't but have ideas about the project) • Thank you all for your contributions, however small, and chat soon. — Giantflightlessbirds

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay[edit]

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Which" vs "that"[edit]

What is the difference between "which" and "that"? I don't understand. Coming from your hook change comment on Jenny Suo DYK. —Panamitsu (talk) 02:29, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Panamitsu: I could get into a long dicussion about restrictive and non-restrictive clauses, and whether the subject of the subordinate clause and the main clause are the same, but basically all you need to remember is:

"That" is used to indicate a specific object, item, person, condition, etc., while "which" is used to add information to objects, items, people, situations, etc.

If you really want to learn more, I suggest you google "which vs that". Paora (talk) 02:53, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback request - ideas for an editathon based in Rotorua[edit]

Kia ora, I seek your feedback on a preliminary idea that I have been developing. This is for WANZ to plan an editathon based in Rotorua, focussing on articles and topics of interest in the Rotorua Lakes District. I have previously done some work on a few articles in the Rotorua Lakes District, and was aware that they were rather patchy. When I look into this further, there are major gaps - most especially the cultural aspects. It is disappointing to see the currently poor level of coverage of manawhenua and iwi topics. I am working on a table of articles - here is a link to a copy of where I have got to so far:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zb2EOVOuT-aFOm5ZMt1gC_cS_4_uhUwq/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=103554601031698006176&rtpof=true&sd=true This is the easy part. The hard part is developing a concept for how an editathon could work in Rotorua, and who we might need to invite to provide cultural input and direct us to the most useful sources, so that the editathon was genuinely effective in improving coverage of manawhenua and iwi topics. I would appreciate your thoughts. Do you think the idea is practical - that it would be feasible to find someone with the right background and skills who would engage with us ? If you think the idea is potentially worthwhile, what are the next steps ? Try for engagement with Rotorua Museum or Library, or perhaps seek co-operation from a premiere tourist operation like Te Puia ? (I am thinking here that a direct approach to iwi organisations might not be effective). Keen for your thoughts.__ Marshelec (talk) 01:50, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article John Mills (rugby union) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:NSPORT and WP:GNG: played a couple games at the national level but did not achieve much success, not much coverage exists about him

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. FRSNZ list[edit]

Hi @Paora (and tagging @Schwede66). I've been right through the table adding the images that Wikidata knows about, adding in all the missing people to bring the list up to date, and trying to make sure people are linked to the right page. By my count there should be 793 people in the table but I'd welcome a second opinion (maybe it would be worth us having numbering in the table? It would assist in keeping the page and total number current in future). Technically the original fellows weren't elected but I think they're included in the table so I included them in my count. I separated out the Honorary Fellows on Wikidata and made a category for them in Wikipedia. There are more than 250 of them though so I haven't gone through to add people to the category, other than where they were in the wrong one.
