Elmsford is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 4,676 at the 2000 census. As a village, it is located in the Town of Greenburgh. The village is named after a large elm tree that once grew in the community.
The Village of Elmsford is in the northern part of the town near Interstate 287.
History
Elmsford was known in the past as "Storms Bridge" and "Halls Corners." The village assumed its current name in 1870 and became an incorporated village in 1910.
Some also consider Elmsford to be responsible for the birth of the term "cocktail". It was because a local restaurant in town ran out of stirrers for drinks and used a cock's tail to stir the drink.
Elmsford is also the burial place of Isaac Van Wart, Revolutionary War hero who, along with John Paulding and David Williams, captured the British spy Major John Andre.
The village's schools are run by the Elmsford Board of Education and include Dixson Primary, Alice E. Grady Elementary and Alexander Hamilton High.
