Samsung Electronics (Hangul:삼성전자; KRX: 005930, KRX: 005935, LSESMSN, LSESMSD) is one of the world's largest IT companies by revenue.[1] In August 2005, BusinessWeek rated Samsung as "the leading consumer-electronics brand".[2] Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, it is part of the Korean Samsung Group, operating in approximately over 100 countries. The name samsung literally means "three stars" or "tristar" in Korean.

Samsung Electronics is viewed by many Koreans as a symbol of national pride and 'can do' spirit along with its Korean rival, LG Electronics. The two leading companies also represent the miracle of the Korean economy and South Korea's prominence in Information Technology, Electronics, Science.

Samsung Electronics announced at the start of the 21st century to "become the world's largest electronics company in just 5 years". This ambitious statement was seen as very unlikely to come true at the time as South Korea's largest electronics company was far behind Japanese rivals, although it was a leader in semiconductors and have some competitive products on the global market already.

The company began to see record profits from the start of the 21st century, especially in 2003, when it received a very encouraging 33% growth in an arbitrarily calculated 'brand value'.[3]

Brand Finance considers Samsung as the world's top brand in the electronics sector, coming 32rd overall brand.[4] also, Business Week considers Samsung is the world's top brand of electronics, coming 20th overall.[5]

Samsung is not only World's Top brand of Electronics, but also one of the most innovative companies in the world.

According to Business Week, Samsung is one of the "World's Most Innovative Companies", and ranking 12th.[6]

Samsung Electronics continued success is explained by the fact that it is the world's largest manufacturer of memory chips and liquid crystal displays, the electronics industry's equivalent of oil. They are crucial to all modern electronic devices, allowing Samsung Electronics to develop itself and handicap dependent competitors where necessary.

Another reason for its incredible success comes from the strong leadership of the CEO, Jong-Yong Yun, as well as the very motivated and hard working employees. Workers of Samsung Electronics are famous in Korea as hard workers.

As a chip maker, the semiconductor division of Samsung Electronics is the world's number 1 manufacturer of all key areas of semiconductor such as DRAM, SRAM, Flash Memory, NAND Flash Memory and Display Driver IC.[7] In particular this has been the case for DRAM and SRAM for over a decade.

Another significant area of business is the liquid crystal display, or LCD, where Samsung Electronics is the world's largest LCD manufacturer,[8] selling over 6,2 million LCD TVs in 2006. It is also the number 1 mobile phone manufacturer in Asia.[9]

History

The Samsung Group was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul (1910-1987). It was incorporated in 1951 as Samsung Corporation. Samsung Electronics, a subsidiary, was founded in Daegu, South Korea.

Samsung Electronics (SEC) was founded in 1969 by the name of Samsung Electric Industries. It manufactured electronic appliances such as TVs, calculators, refrigerators, air conditioners and washers. By 1981, the company had manufactured over 10 million black-and-white TVs. In 1988, it merged with Samsung Semiconductor & Communications. It developed the world's first 64M DRAM in 1992. [10]

On December 2006, the British Royal Family ordered 100 sets of Samsung TV to the Buckingham Palace.[11] it was also the first time that the Royal Family signed a contract with a TV maker.

On February 2007, Samsung signed an agreement for exclusive supply of TV and electronic goods to Town House Galleria,[12] the top luxury hotel in Europe.[13]
