As of 31 December 2014, there are 1387 functioning jails in India having a total capacity to house 356,561 prisoners.[1]
Andhra Pradesh
- Rajahmundry Central Prison, established in 1864 is the Oldest of the Jail Buildings in India. It was originally the Dutch Fort of 1602.[2]
- Nellore Central Prison, established in 1901
- Kadapa Central Prison, established in 1992
- Visakhapatnam Central Prison, established in 2001
Besides above 4 Central Prisons, the State has 7 District jails, 99 Sub jails, a Women jail & a Open jail.
Arunachal Pradesh
The State has a District Jail at Itanagar.
Assam
- Guwahati Central Jail, Guwahati
- Tezpur Central Jail, Tezpur, Sonitpur
- Silchar Central Jail, Silchar, Cachar
- Dibrugarh Central Jail, Dibrugarh
