Citing Web sources from sites that are currently unavailable

I'm trying to add citations to the page Oksana Markarova, the current Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, but I'm running into an issue where the Ukrainian government sites that I would like to cite are down/not responding.

Unfortunately, the only copy of the webpage in question which details the time she spent in her position as Commissioner for Investment that I can find online are the ones that Google has cached - would it still be possible to add them as a citation followed by a Template:Dead link? If so, how do I resolve the accessdate issue? Echohawkdown (talk) 03:09, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Generally, I'd recommend checking out the information at Help:Archiving a source and seeing if Internet Archive had a copy. However, it doesn't seem to have a copy of that page yet. So, I'd mark it with {{Dead link}} and probably just leave the access date out of the citation entirely for now. I'm assuming the site is down from cyberattacks with the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, so I think it'll probably be back eventually when this all comes to some form of resolution. Bsoyka (talk · contribs) 03:33, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - as noted, the page hasn't been archived on the Wayback Machine. I'll just use Template:Dead link in the meantime. Echohawkdown (talk) 03:59, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Echohawkdown You can always archive the Google cache version and place that. The google cache version will eventually go away once the original version does, but the archived version will stay.
I did so before it went down: https://ghostarchive.org/archive/DbN79. Note the google cache page was text only, and I am not sure if it had the information you were looking for Rlink2 (talk) 19:45, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Echohawkdown: Hello Echo! You can see if there is an archive of the source by using the Wayback Machine (AKA Internet Archive). You can also use the Internet Archive Bot to archive all the links it can on the page which will possibly also find other dead links only in archive form. An advantage of IA bot is that it doesn't just user the Internet Archive website but a few other archival websites as well. Hope this helps! ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:34, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - as noted, the page hasn't been archived on the Wayback Machine. I'll give the Internet Archive Bot a try though, since I wasn't aware of it before. Echohawkdown (talk) 03:59, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Echohawkdown: If you don't know how to use it then I can run it on that page real quick. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:53, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I've gone ahead and run the bot on the page and it appears the link you found is indeed dead and has been tagged. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:58, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze Wolf: Thanks - I didn't have perms to queue up jobs for IAB (possibly because I need edits/contributions on MetaWiki first? Documentation was unclear). I've managed to access the page in question by using a VPN with an exit node in Ukraine, since Ukraine's Ministry of Finance has restricted access to their sites to Ukrainian IP addresses, per this article from Bloomberg (paywall).
I've updated the citation accordingly, but now I'm stuck with a different problem: the {{Dead link}} says it was dead as of Feb 2022, but the access date was 2022-03-01. Do I leave it as is? I've already left a note on the talk page about the Ministry of Finance's IP restriction policy, but I'm at a loss at how to reconcile the dates on this particular citation. Echohawkdown (talk) 10:08, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Echohawkdown: I would just leave it. Dunno why the access date is yesterday. However that is interesting that the website is restricted to Ukrainian IPs. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:35, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanted to pop in - @Echohawkdown:, you may find archive.is more useful for tracking down dead URLs; unlike the WayBack Machine, if a URL isn't currently archived on archive.is, it will display links to check if it's archived elsewhere, or available on google cache. I've found it lifesaving many times for URLs I once thought unsalvageable.--Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) ({{ping}} me!) 22:19, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all this thread is extremely helpful - I have been running into the same issue on an author page I am working on.Earnsthearthrob (talk) 17:11, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback for my article

Hi everyone, I appreciate your feedback to this article - Communion at Home Should it be a separate page or a section in an existing page and how it can be improved. Thanks for your time and input. Elenatina (talk) 14:48, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Elenatina: I feel as though the article should just go in eucharist, which weirdly the article name for communion, as a separate section. ― Kaleeb18TalkCaleb 15:14, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Elenatina: Agreed. The "Preconditions" section of your draft is unreferenced, and hopefully that is covered in detail in the Eucharist article. GoingBatty (talk) 15:21, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: Thanks! I've added reference to the Preconditions section and also corrected the spelling consistency feedback and added this as a section to the Eucharist article. How do I delete this page? Elenatina (talk) 11:17, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Elenatina: You can nominate the page for deletion, but since it is a draft we usually just change the draft into a redirect to another article. So for your instance draft:communion at home needs to be a redirect page for the section communion at home in the article Eucharist. You can do that by blanking the draft and putting #REDIRECT [[Eucharist#Communion at home]] in it. The # is there so it redirects you into that section, so it basically stands for in the section. ― Kaleeb18TalkCaleb 12:58, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kaleeb18: Ok, I've copied the text you sent. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elenatina (talkcontribs) 13:03, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Am I in "community good standing"?

Hello. Just recently, I self-requested a block, only for it to be lifted ~6 hours later.

However, I have this question: does "community good standing" mean no behavioral blocks/bans in the past 6 months, or no blocks/bans regardless of whether or not it was self-requested?

Also, to add to its complexity, I do have a complex unblock discussion at my talk page here. Use that to give you a better answer.

Now, I ask you: Do you think I'm in "community good standing"? — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS16:39, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of people screw up with tools from time to time. You already have the rollback permissions back, so that's a good sign that community good standing is something you're in. casualdejekyll 17:02, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you have to worry about self requested blocks. For the purposes of any discussion the fact it was self-requested would be noted. Rlink2 (talk) 19:56, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User page

I've only been a Wikipedia editor for a few months. Still a novice. I was just wondering why my username still shows up red with no userpage, only a talk page. How does one actually go about getting their own userpage, or is it something that has to be requested? 🤔 I feel like a ghost! 👻👻👻 PetSematary182 (talk) 21:29, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@PetSematary182: Click on the red link, and it will redirect you to the page editor, and from there you can write it like any other page. You may want to write a bit about yourself, add some fun userboxes, maybe show off your awards if you have any. I think this page may be of help. Hope this helps! QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 21:46, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

PetSematary182 an easy way to do it is this: First, search "User:PetSematary182" (and EXACTLY that) in the search bar. Then, a message will show up, saying "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name" and so on, then click "edit" and you can go on from there. Another way to do it is to search your talk page, in this case, "User talk:PetSematary182" in the search bar, and then click on the "User Page" tab, and the editor will automatically open. Once you have text in your user page, your user page link will appear blue. You can change your signature in Preferences (Like me :D), although I can't explain that right now because it's a long and complicated process. Anyway, I hope you have found this helpful. Sincerely, CertifiedAmazing2 wanna chat? 21:45, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for the help, CertifiedAmazing2 and QuickQuokka! PetSematary182 (talk) 21:59, 4 March 2022 (UTC)PetSematary182[reply]

@PetSematary182 I took a look at your newly created user page. The text is fine but the Canadian flag could be quite a bit smaller. It is currently much wider than the default width of the entire page - see how wide the text above the flag image is. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:07, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see what you mean. I'm not good with image formatting, but I'll try to fix it up a bit. PetSematary182 (talk) 15:20, 6 March 2022 (UTC)PetSematary182[reply]

Can someone help me replace some images?

I vectorized File:That Poppy Signature.png into File:That Poppy Signature.svg.

I want to replace all instances of the former, with the latter, but I cannot do so currently.

Can someone do it for me, if it is not a problem? QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 21:41, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, QuickQuokka. I'm not sure what your problem is. File:That Poppy Signature.png shows all pages that use the image - it only lists one page on en-wiki, Poppy (entertainer), but there are a dozen pages on other wikis that use it. I don't think there is any way to rplace them without going into each one to edit it (though I may be wrong). ColinFine (talk) 22:40, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: I didn't mean all at once, I was just busy at that time. Now I can do it myself :) QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 09:10, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article reports conflicting (unsourced) information but I can only find non-conflicting sources.

(Sorry. Not sure if this is better suited for the article's Talk page, but I'm also asking generally.)

I'm working on getting sources for Robert Kinoshita's article. He made Robbie the Robot, and the article currently says Robby was "Created at a cost of anywhere between $125,000 and $1,000,000 — depending on which source is quoted ". Every source I've found has been in the $100k-$150 "reported"/"estimated" range. Nowhere near $1 million unless we're talking about inflation. Would it be better to remove the "and $1,000,000 — depending on which source is quoted" and just have the $100k-$150 range with multiple sources?

In situations where an article claims a wide range for something, but I can only find sources for something very different, what should I do? There may be actual sources with the extreme/outside values that I just haven't been able to fine, so I don't feel like I should remove it entirely. But it seems odd to me if I leave it with the sources giving a very limited range.

Not sure what I should do. Rourensu (talk) 22:42, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Rourensu: I'd remove it, with an edit-summary explaining you can't find a source to justify a cost that high. If anyone knows one, they can put it back in, this time with the source. If you're feeling really timid or worried that your search may not have been sufficiently exhaustive, then by all means play it safe and put a message on the article's talk-page first, or a citation-needed tag, and wait a few days before zapping the offending information. But ultimately there is no place for material supported only by the vague feeling that there ought to be a source somewhere if only we could find it. Elemimele (talk) 00:03, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Elemimele: Alright. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rourensu (talkcontribs) 16:02, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I do not precisely follow the operational details of IAbot (I have no personal experience with bots whatsoever), but I noticed in the 4 March 2022 revision of Sexual intercourse that archive links for Google Books were added, even though such archive links generally do not seem to provide useful content, or at least don't provide the expected content. In some circumstances, they produce an error message, or they may produce a web page that doesn't render the book content that was present in the original link.

Either way, it seems like a bad idea to incorporate these dysfunctional archive links into Wikipedia. Does this indicate that IAbot was configured incorrectly, or does logic need to be incorporated into IAbot to bypass archives for certain kinds of links? Fabrickator (talk) 01:30, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Fabrickator: Hello Fabrickator! Yes logic does need to be used when using IAB. I know there's some way to fix these but I'm not able to find it at the moment. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 01:46, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fabrickator: Welcome to the Teahouse! Are you looking for {{cbignore}}? GoingBatty (talk) 04:39, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I thought they had fixed this. I think archive.org stopped archiving new Google Books URLs, but the bot may place links to old Google Books URLs. You can always file a bug at Phab. Rlink2 (talk) 19:55, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Texas Lane's new article

I'm just trying to make an article but it keeps getting deleted. Texas Lane (talk) 03:15, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Texas Lane! It seems the article is being deleted as it's very short and doesn't show why it's notable enough for inclusion here. This doesn't have anything to do with laws as you mentioned on your talk page, but rather concerns our guidelines for what actually belongs here. {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 03:55, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other languages on Wikipedia

Please advise me whether there is a super admin for other languages on Wikipedia. If there is an unfair treatments by other Korean language admins to the users: i,e,) Concerning clear circumstantial evidence or , obvious violation of the rules on Wikipedia, it was generally disregarded if it happens to the specific users, however other users were blocked although it was quite vague circumstantial evidence. How the user can get some review for the biased administrative actions? Goodtiming8871 (talk) 06:04, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Goodtiming8871. Each language version of Wikipedia has its own policies and guidelines. If you are having difficulties on the Korean Wikipedia, then you will need to address those issues there. English Wikipedia editors and administrators have zero influence there, unless they are active contributors to that project. And very few of us are active there. Cullen328 (talk) 06:22, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Cullen328, Thank you for your kind response. In my view, English Wikipedia is the root of other languages of Wikipedia. Please kindly advise me my two inquiries when you are convenient. 1. Would you please kindly advise me the link in English Wikipedia if the user feels the administrators uses the biased administrative actions?

After reading the policies or reviewing opportunities about biased administrative actions in English Wikipedia, I can provide Korean administrators with my input. 2. If there are very few of English Wikipedia administrators who are involved in Korean Wikipedia, please kindly provide me with the user ID(s): preferably non native Korean speakers as per NPOV concerning the political agenda in South Korea. Goodtiming8871 (talk) 10:28, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Goodtiming8871: as Cullen has explained to you, nothing in English Wikipedia has any authority in another Wikipedia. English Wikipedia is the root of other languages of Wikipedia is true historically, but not for any current purpose. Your request is akin to saying "I have a problem with the Korean authorities: please tell me who in the British Government I should talk to". You might well find somebody who can speak Korean, but they will have zero authority in Korea. ColinFine (talk) 11:39, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Goodtiming8871, traditionally the place to report systemic issues is Meta-wiki (Swedish and Croatian wikis are recent examples). Be prepared for a long process with counter-accusations. In the future, UCoC Enforcement and U4C may be an option. WMF/T&S did intervene with a conflict among Chinese and Hong Kong users, but in that case there were affiliates involved. For Korean-speakers here who might be willing to get involved, have you tried asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea? ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 20:39, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pelagic Thank you for your kind response and advice about Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea and Meta-wiki From my understanding, it's great breathing space for me to discuss about systemic issues of Korean Wikipedia with other users who can speak Korean. I am planning to raise the issues on WikiProject Korea as soon as practicable if there are no other simpler or quicker options. Goodtiming8871 (talk) 22:23, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

AWB editing

Finally thought to ask a question at the Teahouse after many days. I have been using AWB for many days now. What I mostly do is fix new pages, using the source as new pages and then making out a list. But, AWB is supposed to be a much powerful tool. Actually the problem is with me. I cannot fully unleash the power of this super piece of software. I have read the manual of AWB, but it is just a detailed explanation of how to use it. The manual mainly contains information about all the different toolbars and options. But recently I have found out about the typo fixing feature, and have started using it well. But I want to know, what else I can do with this. I know many things can be done, and many people know what more can actually be done. I am under the mentorship of FormalDude, but he said that he doesn't have much knowledge about AWB. So I thought to ask the question at the Teahouse, to get information about AWB from multiple users. I would really be glad if some AWB expert user tells me what else I can do with this tool. Regards.

Note: Anyone answering this question (or trying to answer) can see my contributions to see what type of AWB edits I am making presently, to give me more new ideas. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 09:50, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible: This is probably a question best asked at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser. Your question is a bit like someone asking how to unleash the full power of an MS Access database, without knowing what tasks they wish to perform with it. That should be your first thing to identify, and then to decide if AWB is the best tool for the job. A multi-tool is a wonderful device, but no good if you want to hammer a nail into a piece of wood. I used AWB quite a lot a few years ago, but was (and still am) rather scared by the many areas I do not understand how to use, so I stay well-clear and you should too. If you do serious harm with it, you could be blocked from editing, so proceed with care. Looking at your edits with it, you seem to be using it as I did. If I remember rightly, I created a list of articles within a certain group or category, and attempted to fix all the typos and grammar errors within each one. I then focussed on fixing just one specific typo or grammatical issue (doesnt -> doesn't; 1960's -> 1960s; off of -> off, for example) across all articles. At that time, Lupin's spellchecker was working, and I used that to monitor live edits and then fixed errors particularly frequently-occurring typos with AWB that I first saw being flagged up by Lupin.
Bottom line: If you don't know what you're doing with elements of AWB, and can't find out how to do it properly - don't do it. Good luck with your journey. Nick Moyes (talk) 11:14, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes Thanks for your comment and wishes. By the way, I know how to use MS Access database. I had once created a teacher login form and student registration data collection table using MS Access. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:06, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Some people have pings disabled. If you need to send a message to someone the absoulte surest way is to leave a message on talk page, since wikimedia will always send out a notification for that. Rlink2 (talk) 05:39, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

But, I don't have my pings disabled. Then why didn't nick moyes' ping reach me? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:44, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you were talking about you pinging someone else, my bad. I understand your question now.
Maybe its something to do with how he signed his message. When pinging, you need to have the message singed in the same edit. If not, the ping won't work, even if you sign the edit after. The addition of a ping template and the signing (tlides) have to be in the same edit.
Hope that helps. Rlink2 (talk) 05:47, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Moyes Maybe there was some error. I also use the reply tool under discussion tools. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:46, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Newzlighter, virtually everyone has troubles creating a draft (let alone an article), if they don't already have experience in improving and augmenting existing articles. So I suggest that you try your hand at the latter. (Always base your contributions on reliable sources, and always cite these clearly.) -- Hoary (talk) 13:26, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Newzlighter, welcome to the Teahouse! Writing a WP-article that isn't quickly deleted is difficult if you have no experience in how to edit and what is demanded per WP:s rules (there are quite a lot.) WP:TUTORIAL is a good place to start. On how to start an article, pick a topic that meets the demands here: WP:GNG, otherwise you are wasting you're time. Then move on to Help:Your first article. Good luck! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:29, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Are these sources reliable?

[1] -- Karsan Chanda (talk) 14:15, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable for what purpose, Karsan Chanda? For the theory of managing tourism, maybe (though it's written in something which is almost, but not quite, English); but I'm dubious that it is reliable for historical information about tourists sites. ColinFine (talk) 16:37, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

References

Karsan Chanda that's a difficult question to answer. The book is published by IGI Global, and since I'd never heard of that company I did a little research and found conflicting opinions on whether or not it was a reputable publisher. I would say that if you had several other good references it would be acceptable to include the book you linked as one of many references. Karenthewriter (talk) 16:37, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Karenthewriter It is written in this book that Amber fort was built by Meena dynasty. So is this source valid? -- Karsan Chanda (talk) 16:58, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would say, no. The authors of the book are (presumably) experts in tourism. There is no reason to think that they are reliable as historians. Why don't you consult a work by a historian for information about the Amber fort? Maproom (talk) 17:46, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Karsan Chanda I have no knowledge of Amber fort, or who built it. You cited a published book, and I didn't even read what the book said. I just looked at the publisher, and saw there were different opinions about whether this is a reputable publisher or not. So I can't say if anyone at the publishing company checks facts before agreeing to print a book. Your first article has a Gathering References section that stresses the importance of using reliable sources, and I was unable to find out if IGI Global was considered a reliable publisher. I would advise you to find a backup source for which dynasty built Amber fort, in case it is deemed IGI Global books are not considered reliable. Karenthewriter (talk) 17:56, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There are other fellows who want to express their opinion on this draft. So please do give your opinion. -- Karsan Chanda (talk) 18:33, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Karsan Chandra, you appear to have spent weeks trying to find a single reliable source for this article. My opinion (without looking at the draft again) is that if you haven't found a source by now, you're not going to, and you should give up on this draft. ColinFine (talk) 19:53, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion a touring guide is not a reliable source. David notMD (talk) 20:19, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Now whilst that is good, writing an article isn’t the easiest thing to do as it requires proficiency in a number of guidelines as prerequisite which include predominantly understanding what our description on what WP:NOTABILITY is, and understating what reliable sources are, and lastly a thorough understanding of WP:GNG (this is very compulsory) the aforementioned are the (pillars) of any article that may be retained on mainspace amongst other things which I teem “secondary”. Ugly Betty

I've been spending a lot of time editing down overlong plot summaries. I found my way to Ugly Betty Season 3, where there's a LONG plot outline, followed by individual episode summaries which restate the same information much more succinctly. Then, just for comparison, I looked at other season pages for Ugly Betty, only to find the same setup on each of them. Easiest thing would be to delete the Plot sections altogether as unnecessarily duplicative. Since this covers a lot of info across several pages, I thought I'd check here first before being bold and doing it. Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 21:52, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Advice for improving from failed GNG

Hello there. I have been working for a little while on a page for Anne Lister College, a new college at University of York. It has just been reviewed and has been removed for failing GNG. I am not trying to appeal against this judgement, but am just puzzled as to what steps to take next.

While the sources on the page are certainly closely related to the university, if not official sources, this is the case with all of the sources for the other college. Again, I am not saying that the review was wrong, but the information on this page I felt was better than on some of the other college's pages. For example, Constantine College has just two sources, both from the university.

Is there a way that I can copy all of the information from the old page onto a publicly accessible draft page for edits to happen until it is felt that the information is of a suitable level to meet GNG some resubmitted for review? Or some other way that I should try to improve the page without breaking any guidelines? Stuart Newmanite (talk) 22:09, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

information Note: The previous version of Anne Lister College, York can still be seen here. The article was just redirected. Victor Schmidt (talk) 22:17, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you think that the subject can meet GNG, I suggest using the articles for creation process to create a draft (you can even copy the content from a previous version of the currently redirected article). When you submit it and it is accepted, the accepting reviewer will sort out the redirect. However, you will need to find independent sources for it to be accepted - it may be TOOSOON. You may well find deficient articles about other colleges: there are thousands and thousands of seriously deficient articles among our six million, but people would rather create new ones than fix (or delete) them: see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. How does an article change from Start Class to C or B class?

If there is an article that is rated start class and you believe that it meets the guidelines for a C or B class article, do you have to nominate it to be reviewed, or is the class changed automatically? Thanks! Weissepedia (talk) 22:21, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Weissepedia You may change it yourself if you believe the assessment is wrong. Only Good Article and Featured Article need to go through a formal process. Which article are you referring to? court cases?

HI! I want to write about this court case called McNally vs Regina, because it was very influential on sex and consent law surrounding trans people. However, I am not sure the Wikipedia customs about court cases! Many really interesting cases don't have pages. What exactly makes a case notable? Thank you so much! Heromagnus1 (talk) 23:05, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I am aware, there's no specific notability guideline for court cases, so you'd be going off the general notability guideline, which amounts to having multiple non-routine, in-depth, independent sources with editorial oversight and identifiable authors on the case itself. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 23:12, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Heromagnus1 If the case has been the subject of discussion in mainstream news, law journals, or books by reputable publishers (particularly academic textbooks), you might have sufficient sources for an article.
What case is it? Please give a more specific reference, "McNally v R" is too vague. We might be able to do a quick source search and give you more specific advice. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:31, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to change wiki page

How do I change my wikipedia page?????????? I'm new please help me thanks Ollhg87 2.0 Ollhg87 2.0 (talk) 23:10, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ollhg87 2.0, and welcome to the Teahouse. It's not clear what you are asking. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not social media so "my wikipedia page" does not mean anything. I'm guessing that you are talking about an article about you: please be aware that it is not your page and you do not have any special level of control: in fact, quite the contrary: you are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly. If there is information on there that is wrong, please see AUTOPROB for what you can do about it. If there is information you would like added or altered, you are welcome to make an edit request on the article's talk page, but you must understand that the article is there to summarise what independent sourcs have said about you, not for you to tell anybody what you want them to know. So if you provide a source (unconnected with you) for any information you want included, that is more likely to happen.
If you didn't mean this, then the only thing I can think of that you might mean is your User page: any Wikipedia editor may create a user page, on which they can put any information they like about themselves as a Wikipedia editor. A small amount or more general biographical infomation is acceptable, but not anything that looks promotional. See UPYES for more. ColinFine (talk) 23:23, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism tool?

Is there a tool I can use to check if my draft will be deleted for copyvio? Ficaia (talk) 03:10, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ficaia: Just don't plagiarize in the first place. Things are only deleted for copyright violations if it's clear they're actually copied from an outside source, so just don't do that and you're good. (If you ever have to question whether something is plagiarism, it probably is.) — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:15, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I heard that glib truism all through university, and I'm not sure it always applies. If I'm relying on a translation of a foreign language encyclopaedia to source biographical information, exactly how much the wording has to be changed is ambiguous. Ficaia (talk) 04:19, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ficaia See WP:PLAGIARISM#Tools Paper9oll (🔔📝) 04:21, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ficaia If you are translating a foreign Wikipedia page into English without anything more than using your translation skills, then you are obliged to acknowledge the source of the material (the other Wikipedia page). You would use the {{Translated page}} template, as explained at Help:Translation.
You would however, do far better to actually read the sources your are wanting to cite, and create content in your own words, whilst also ensuring the topic will meet our Notability Criteria, as not all Wikipedias have identical rules and policies in place. Ours, here, are often much stricter. It's a task that should not be beyond anyone's abilities. I created this page from all French sources recently, whilst not having much more than schoolboy French to work from. I then wrote in my own words, as should you.
Finally, you might like to use 'Earwig's CopyVio' detector at https://copyvios.toolforge.org/, however this won't work across different languages. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:47, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking for a site which allows the public to collaborate on a "tree of knowledge"

I'm basically looking for a centralised tree of knowledge, where you can collaborate with the public to construct mind-maps within each topic As with Wiki pages - lots of hyperlinks, anyone can edit the articles. However, wikipedia presents information as long passages of text. Often it is easier to present information as a logical flowchart or mind map, rather than as passages of text. I'm familiar with the existence of specific 'wiki' sites, however that is not what I mean. I'm looking for a site containing "mind maps", rather than passages of text (as you see in a traditional wikipedia article)

I'm looking for a free, open site where the public can collaborate simultaneously to create a universal "Tree of Knowledge"

Any suggestions?

my article has been declined

my article has been declined because there's a cross namespace redirect

Hello, I'm Rym from Algeria. I have written an article about an Algerian food delivery service but it has been proposed for deletion, moved to the draftspace, then declined when I submitted it for review. Starting with the deletion proposal, they assumed that my article is promotional, and that I'm a SPA (single-purposed account). But I negated all the assumptions, and argued with what I've already stated in my user page; that I'm only interested in Algeria's digital and technological growth, which is rarely dealt with on Wikipedia, and that I'm also active in the French Wikipedia. They dropped the deletion but gave my article the Advertisement tag. That was last week, now they moved my article to the draftspace. Now thinking about it, the references in my article are all in Arabic and French since these are the main languages of Algeria, does this make my article unworthy of being on Wikipedia? I mean my sources are reliable and I have no business promoting the service yet are they not considered verifiable? About why my article hasn't been approved when submitted to review, they mentioned that it already exists, and I think it's some kind of cross namespace redirect problem, although I've proposed that draft redirect to speedy deletion. Can someone please explain how I can save my article? thank you, Rymknows23 (talk) 11:12, 6 March 2022 (UTC) Rymknows23 (talk) 11:12, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rymknows23, I've had a long day, and therefore haven't looked at your draft; and because I haven't looked at it, I can't comment on how to save it. However I deleted Draft:FoodBeeper, and used this name for what, until a few minutes ago, had been Draft:FoodBeeper(2). Also, I'll answer one of your questions: Putting aside the important question of the reliability, etc, of references, the fact that they're all in Arabic or French doesn't matter. (Or anyway, it shouldn't matter.) -- Hoary (talk) 11:45, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary thank you!! I really appreciate your help. I've resubmitted the article for review and I'm waiting for it to be approved, hopefully. As for the references dilemma, I can't really find another reason why my article is seen as promotional. Thank you again, regrads, Rymknows23 (talk) 12:07, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi!
Well, looking at Draft:FoodBeeper, there are still several issues with the draft. As the tag said, some of your wordings are promotional: "projecting a diverse collection of menus", "The service has since expanded remarkably".
You did put several reliable sources, and as Hoary said, sources of all languages are permitted. You also seem to put a balance between secondary and primary sources (I may be horribly wrong, but from the layouts of the sources I judge such). However, many of your sentences are still unsourced; 13 I can count.
You need to also fix capitalization problems: for example, "Market Expansion" must be "Market expansion", and "covid-19" must be "COVID-19".
I won't assume that you are a paid editor, but I do think, like many others, that it is still far from being article-worthy. You can ask those involved with the draft discussions for specific input; if they're kind enough they'll give you their humble thoughts. Happy editing! GeraldWL 12:13, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gerald Waldo Luis Thank you so much for taking the time to review my article, I highly appreciate it. I will try to fix the errors and my writing tone so it does't misconvey my actual intentions. As of the topic being not article-worthy, I sought Wikipedia once for an assignment about Algeria's technological development and couldn't find any information, so I decided to change things. this article will not be my last, I will add others in the near future. Regards, Rymknows23 (talk) 14:09, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Rymknows23: FoodBeeper's posts on their LinkedIn/Facebook/Twitter pages do not help demonstrate notability. Also, it would be helpful to add |trans-title= to your non-English references. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:32, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

--Harishnakerag (talk) 14:27, 6 March 2022 (UTC) thanks for the inputs. Will rework on the draft and resubmit[reply]

Hello, Harishnakerag. What you need to do first is to find some better sources. In order to establish that a subject meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, you need several sources, each of which meets all three of being reliable, independent, and having significant coverage of the subject. It seems to me that you currently have not even one source which satisfies all three of these: the Business World looks the best, but it very much has the air of being based on a press release, and so does not meet the criterion of independence. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. @Morgan11100 Welcome to the Teahouse. I use a mobile for editing quite a bit, but abandoned the mobile app as it seems more designed for easy viewing than for proper editing. I recommend simply using your normal mobile browser and edit in 'Desktop view' - there's a tiny link at the very bottom of each page which lets you switch. For adding and editing simple tables, I recommend you then do this in WP:Visual Editor, although it's easy to switch between that and Source Editor via the pencil icon on the right said of the editing tool menu. I hope this helps - let us know how you get on. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Informalmarc1, and welcome to the Teahouse. If you have knowledge on a subject and think there could be an article on that subject, the part that somebody absolutely must do first is to find reliable sources that discuss the matter. Your knowledge can be useful for finding and interpreting those sources, but unless there are such sources, I'm afraid that what you know cannot be used in Wikipedia: see original research for why not. ColinFine (talk) 18:20, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to shut this down right here. I am already well aware that there is no Roblox exploit that passes WP:GNG - however, there may be enough sourcing to justify a mention in the Roblox article. casualdejekyll 19:25, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As a general rule, unless a specific exploit/bug/mod has received coverage in the media (e.g. the Hot Coffee controversy or Corrupted Blood) specific ones do not justify an article. That the game is buggy en generale also generally doesn't merit a mention in the article unless it's been criticised for the amount of bugs in it (e.g. Sonic 2006). —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 21:53, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Informalmarc1: Hi there! The Teahouse is a place where we can help answer questions about Wikipedia, but not a place to find people willing to create new articles upon request. If you'd like to provide sources for Roblox serversides/exploits, your best place to ask for assistance in adding them to the Roblox article is at the article's talk page: Talk:Roblox. Happy editing! I am requesting help removing "biographical" and "extensively edited" tags. I edited out words I thought might seem biased to remove the "biographical" tag. But since I removed so much, and was not aware that authors are not supposed to edit material about themselves, instead of that tag being removed, a new "extensively edited" tag was added. I am requesting help removing these two tags. Hello Meltdown reverter. If you are logged in and click on Special:UserLogin then you will be able to log in as another username, as you get logged out of your current one. If you click on Special:CreateAccount, then you will be able to create another account while staying logged in to your current one. You can safely visit either link without anything happening immediately. For various reasons we normally recommend sticking with one account. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:29, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help Request at German "Embassy"

Hi, I am an editor here on the English Wikipedia. In February, I noticed a problem with an on our German-language counterpart: Due to a false cognate between Latin and German as well as a misunderstanding about a topic, the German article contains misinformation and information that should be put into a separate, newly-made article. I left a help request at the "embassy," but no one has gotten back to me yet, and it has been awhile. Can I have some further advice? Joesom333 (talk) 21:29, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Joesom333! The Embassy here is unfortunately a pretty inactive space, but luckily the Teahouse here is much better. Could you link the articles you're talking about so we can delve into the issue? Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}}talk 22:34, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting an image to a Wiki page

In reference to the page discussing Friar Solanus Casey. How do I upload images that are not mine, but given to me by the original owner to use on the page WinterCup (talk) 01:52, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on if the owner has given them properly. I know the phrasing of that sounds nonsensical, but copyright law can also be nonsensical sometimes (see Wikipedia:Image use policy, WP:UPI). casualdejekyll 02:02, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically, @WinterCup, images where the owner has only given you verbal permission, or has said something like "for use only on Wikipedia", are not allowed. Citations - trying to update Brian Laras page to include his son Zende

Hi I attempted to update Brian Laras Page to include his son Zende but it was stopped by Pavlov2 saying I didn't cite a credible source. What source shall I cite for this? Brians instagram page? News articles online? A birth certificate? Brian speaking to the media about his son? First time trying to update a wikipedia page and I couldn't figure out how to respond to Pavlov2. Thanks in advance for your help. Mikey3795 (talk) 03:33, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for asking here. The next time you can also talk about this on my talk page. For me, most edits on BLP need to add a reference, News articles online, Brians instagram page and Brian speaking to the media about his son are all welcomed. A birth certificate maybe hard to find, and may contain some privacy.
Happy editing. Pavlov2 (talk) 03:36, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Note however that for privacy reasons, Wikipedia discourages adding names of family members to a BLP article unless adding the name helps the reader understand the article's subject. Even in those cases, adding a family member name can only be done if the name has been reported in other reliable sources. See WP:BLPNAME. I don't think primary sources like interviews or birth certificates would qualify. CodeTalker (talk) 04:30, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Response to user

Hello,

I've been contacted by someone suggesting that I may have a COI for a page that I am editing. I will ask a separate question about that. The question for this post is who is Indyguy. His use of an alias prevents anyone from knowing if he has a COI. How is that promoting this policy when COIs cannot even be identified? ```` Chuck Hagerman (talk) 04:16, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Almost everyone here uses an alias of some kind. The policy in question isn't so much about "hunting down" anyone who could possibly have a COI as it is about giving instructions for those who know they do themselves. — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:30, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
information Note: I have received and responded to an email from Chuck Hagerman about this. In this case, I think they used a private email reasonably to ask a somewhat-sensitive question, but I'd like to make it public that this occurred without revealing anything specific about their message. — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 05:04, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of Interest

 – Merging with above — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I am the IT Director for the Libertarian Party of Indiana. How is the wiki page for the Libertarian Party for Indiana supposed to be updated if someone who is a member of the organization does not update it. Who is the person who should update this, and where would they get the information? When I took this over a year ago, it was woefully out of date. So, whatever mechanism that does not involve people with COIs does not seem to be working. I would certainly like to comply, but I don't know how I can get this page updated unless I do it. Please advise. ```` Chuck Hagerman (talk) 04:22, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Chuck Hagerman! You can use an edit request to have someone else make edits to the article for you due to your COI, which you are also required to disclose due to your employment per the Wikimedia terms of use, so I recommend having a read through WP:PAIDCOI. — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:26, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, Bsoyka! Perhaps you can answer this easier than me looking through the linked paged. What is considered employment. I am a volunteer. I am not paid anything. Does that meet the definition of employment?```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chuck Hagerman (talkcontribs) 04:44, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chuck Hagerman: In that case, it wouldn't be a PAIDCOI, but it'd still be a COI and I'd still very highly recommend using edit requests rather than editing directly. — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:49, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chuck Hagerman: Regarding your question "How is the wiki page for the Libertarian Party for Indiana supposed to be updated if someone who is a member of the organization does not update it. Who is the person who should update this, and where would they get the information?"...
The following doesn't all apply to you for THIS article, because of your COI, but I thought I would mention this anyway. The answer is, a core principle of Wikipedia is that all information in any article should be verifiable by the reader. That means that every fact asserted in the article needs a citation that is reliable, independent, and having significant coverage of the subject. (Those words in blue are links for more information.) And the citations must be present in the article so the reader can easily see them to verify the information. Therefore, it does not take someone with inside knowledge to create or update an article -- anyone who can find published references can create or update an article on any subject, even if they are not experts in the field (although knowing the subject matter does help). Information coming from someone's personal knowledge can't be verified by a reader.
If an article writer/editor knows that something is true, it's OK to include the fact, as long as a citation is also included in-line with the article. That's just how things work here. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 05:12, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Upload Public Domain file to Wikimedia Commons

Hello everyone, I want to ask that how can I upload a public domain file to Wikimedia Commons? When uploading, I can only see option to select a creative commons license of the file. I have to import files from Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons for uploading. How can I directly upload a public domain file to commons? Thanks. GoldenHayato 04:33, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@GoldenHayato: What images specifically? You'll likely need to use a custom copyright tag in the upload form, the question is just which one. What makes the images public domain? — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:36, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bsoyka: Hi, thanks for replying me. The image is too simple to be elegible for copyright. It is a logo with few words and simple geometric shapes. How can I upload directly to commons? Thanks. GoldenHayato 04:40, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@GoldenHayato: Welcome to the Teahouse! When you use commons:Special:UploadWizard, the third step is "Release rights". Select "This file is not my own work" and then select the appropriate options to explain what makes the image public domain. See also commons:Help:Contents. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:45, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, when uploading to the Commons, under "Release rights", choose "This file is not my own work.", and for the reason, under "Another reason not mentioned above", enter {{PD-textlogo}}. — {{u|Bsoyka}}talk 04:46, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rejected draft

What to do with a draft which is rejected? Is it impossible to make that an article? Shinnosuke15, 07:14, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need to do anything with it. But if this is about Draft:Pathaan_(film), you could wait until after the film has been released, and then look for reviews that might help to establish it as notable.   Maproom (talk) 08:41, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Shinnosuke15: If a draft of yours has been rejected by a reviewer in the Articles for Creation review process, you should not resubmit this draft or attempt to resubmit this draft or prepare or submit a draft that is substantially the same as this draft without first discussing the reasons for the rejection. You may request a discussion with the rejecting reviewer, or you may request a discussion with the community. A discussion will not necessarily agree to a resubmission. ––FormalDude talk 08:45, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, suppose the topic of a draft, it can be Draft:Pathaan (film) or not, has gained notability, then what to do? As I know, a rejected draft cannot become an article. Shinnosuke15, 09:25, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is a complicated history of this film, under several titles, being submitted and then Declined, Rejected, or deleted via AfD (three times), all summarized at Pathan (film). The film is not expected to be released until 2023. Editing of the draft can continue, but it should not be submitted until after the film is released and reviews and box office performance are published, to be used as references. At that time, a request should be sent to the people who rejected it. David notMD (talk) 10:46, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is a verified Facebook page considered a reliable source?

hello, I wonder if I can use a verified facebook page as a reliable source for a statement about an event in my article! thank you, Rymknows23 (talk) 10:42, 7 March 2022 (UTC) Rymknows23 (talk) 10:42, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The general guideline is here - "The official page of a subject may be used as a self-published, primary source, but only if it can be authenticated as belonging to the subject. (See Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published sources.)". However, it is generally discouraged from being used, as if the information genuinely belongs in an encyclopedia, it will be covered in more authoritative third-party sources anyway.
