A new source on Cerebral Folate Deficiency

Good evening, David! I came across a new review article about Cerebral folate deficiency - in your opinion, is this review good enough to be cited/quoted in the CFD article? Review: PMID 30916789 Hope you are doing fine! Cheers from Russia, ---CopperKettle 14:52, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely a valid ref, and provides info to improve the CFD article. David notMD (talk) 16:37, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Minimal Niacin dose for intramuscular injection enough for a flushing

Thank you for your edits of Niacin. There was a minimal dose specified to produce flushing. However, it was not specified whether it was an oral dose or IM/IV dose. Probably the oral one. If so, we should clarify that. Do you have a good source at hand? Also, it seems that for IM/IV path, even doses as small as 10 mg are enough to produce flushing. Don't you know where can we find the source for that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxim Masiutin (talkcontribs) 20:00, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In a country where I live (Republic of Moldova), nicotinic acid is only available in pharmacies, as a separate substance, in injectable form only. The oral form is only available in small doses as a vitamin-B complex together with other vitamins. In Russia, situation is the same - the main form is injectable, albeit the tablets of nicotinic acid are avaialable as a serarate substance, the injectable form is more widespread. That's why I have asked to you emphasize on the form of niacin. By the way, I have substantially edited the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CYP4F2 today. Could you please review it, maybe you may have some ideas on how can I improve it? Thank you very much in advance for your feedback. -- Maxim Masiutin (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:38, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Myles Moylan

Thank you for replying to me. I don't have an obituary but I previously submitted a piece that was published in the Tuam Herald newspaper on July 22nd, 1876 to congratulate Tuam man, Major Myles Moylan, on his 'providential escape' at the Battle of the Little Bighorn less than a month previously. His brother and nephews who were living in Tuam at the time were mentioned by name. It wasn't acceptable as proof that Myles was from Tuam. The Tuam Herald piece is attached to Myles's brother John on Myles's Findagrave page <Findagrave ></https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/169515151/john-moylan>. Riboflavin DYK?

Hi David and congratulations on doing most of the heavy lifting to get riboflavin to GA status.

Do you usually propose a DYK when you take articles to that point? I like to do them with my (few) new articles and since science is underrepresented at DYK, I think it would be a good idea here. As to suggestions for the hook, maybe something about it being one cause of the yellow color of urine would attract attention? Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:08, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Michael D. Turnbull I have done DYKs for most of my GAs (see my Talk page for list), and coincidently was thinking that urine color change wold draw views. I will keep you posted on progress. David notMD (talk) 15:35, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

about wikipedia page question

So my wikipedia page got deleted. I'm confused. I copied it to be just like my writer friend's page and did the same formatting and worded it along the same lines. She showcases her work/books/movies. I did the same thing with published article links to various magazines etc. Do I have to get someone else to write my page for me? I guess that's my question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diannaippolito (talkcontribs) 19:32, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Diannaippolito: First, you composed in the wrong place. Drafts get created as drafts (seeWP:YFA), not on User pages, and are then submitted to Articles for Creation (AfC) for review. Second, WP:BLP requires that all fact statements be properly referenced. Third - other stuff exists. Among the six million plus articles in English Wikipedia, tens of thousands merit deletion. Autobiography is frowned upon but not forbidden. See WP:AUTO. You can attempt to write about yourself, but all information must cite reliable source references. It's truth plus verification. Listing your published stuff is useful, but in Wikipedialand, DOES NOT confirm notability. What is essential is to have published articles to cite that are about you. In Wikipedialand it is even possible for a book to be article worthy but not the author. Hope this all helps. David notMD (talk) 21:00, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Riboflavin

On 29 December 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Riboflavin, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that consuming the vitamin riboflavin in large amounts will cause urine to have a bright yellow color? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Riboflavin. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Riboflavin), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Saulo Oliveira S.

The article Saulo Oliveira S. must not be deleted as long as some wiki editors are confusing the email name of a fan (prince contact) with a possible member of the biographer's team, which is not true. There is no conflict of interest and the page is not autobiographical. About the page is orphaned, improvements will be made in the next few hours to adjust the link. It is intended to improve the page by adding even more reliable sources. Therefore the page will be improved and should not be deleted.

Please remove the page from the delete possibility. The work to build an article is arduous and this has been a personal journey of writing and learning, for someone with no connection to the artist, and it is being improved every day. Thanks for the understanding of everyone in the community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Princeofrockcontact (talkcontribs) 14:19, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Princeofrockcontact Once nominated at AfD the process must go forward. After 7-10 days an Administrator will review all the comments and reach a decision. See Help:My article got nominated for deletion!. You can add one Keep comment at the AfD, but the best path to saving the article is adding better references first, and then stating that in your AfD comment. While at AfC the draft was Declined several times because the references remained weak. Moving it to mainspace did not correct that problem. This may be an instance of WP:TOOSOON, in that Saulo has not been written about at length because his music output to date is modest. Lastly, "Prince of Rock contact" is an unusual User name choice for a person who professes to have no connection to the artist. You were asked to either confirm or deny a conflict of interest on your Talk page. David notMD (talk) 14:39, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Katherine Hoover

Hello David,

The University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music Sibley Music Library has asked to be Katherine's archives. Much of Katherine's Career predates the internet such that print copies are only available in obscure archives at this point. Still there are 4 or 5 dissertations written about Katherine's works that are available electronically from those Universitys. Is it true that dissertations and theses are generally in the public domain?

Regarding: A woman's voice : the clarinet concerti of Musgrave, Hoover, and Gotkovsky Author: Nancy King Sanders:

  • It is documented by OCLC
  • It has been published as a google book

You deleted an subjective statement that has been printed in several dissertations or thesis and published from interviews. The thesis documents the passive statement.

What am I doing wrong? AjAirFlex (talk) 05:18, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Creation of Wikipedia page

Hi @David notMD! Thank you for your help. As you can probably see, I am really working hard on trying to figure out the next step about being part of the Wikipedia community which is getting a page approved. So can I not use an individual's website or company's site for secondary information? I asked this in the tearoom and I thought I used it correctly in this way. I can delete all the information pertaining to him in this way, as there are enough other notable sources to carry the page. I am just wondering when it's appropriate to reference an individual's personal website or company page as secondary information because I see this done on so many pages on Wikipedia. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I really thought I had got it this time. I cut so much info out and studied Wikipedia rules! Thank you for your help. I will go into the tearoom now as well to continue to ask advice about it.MediaExpert1979 (talk) 18:16, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Use of symbols in page names

Hello David - do you have any views on the use of symbols such as β in page names. Would you know if there is a guideline somewhere? My own feeling is that the page name ought to be readable to a general reader who may well know the term beta-carotene for example but not the symbol usage. Some pages use a symbol and others don't. Many thanks --Iztwoz (talk) 08:48, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Iztwoz Wikipedia: Article titles and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (technical restrictions) suggest not using symbols, which I would take to not using non-English letters. When I enter a Greek letter in the Search Wikipedia space, I get English names. Example: μ lists M titles. David notMD (talk) 15:30, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that. Shall go ahead and make changes. Best --Iztwoz (talk) 16:28, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Multifaceted Femme Fatale

Recent deletion problem aside, I like the edit you did to the section "Multifaceted Femme Fatale" on Jan 26. It was my first substantive edit other than plot summary work. How did you see my addition so quickly, was it on your watchlist? I've subsequently changed the title to "Complex Femme Fatale"; "multifaceted" seems like a resume key word, or something. -- Pete Best Beatles (talk) 15:53, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I check in as a Teahouse host several times a day, and if there has been an interaction with a new editor, I sometimes check on that person's Contributions to see what else they have been doing. For example, Arunpawargere asked a question at Teahouse which led me to find out that this editor is opposing two proposed article deletions, and is at times editing logged in to an account and not logged in - a serious error that can lead to being indefinitely blocked. So I left a note on Talk page to only edit logged in. Same editor may be paid by the companies in the articles, but has not answered to being paid or having a conflict-of-interest. Undeclared paid editing is another serious transgression. David notMD (talk) 16:00, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Were any volumes published during the perion of Le Musée Napoléon?

Yes .... this is why one of the 3 titles of the publication is Le Musee Napoleon. If the period of this title is 1804 to 1814, then much of the publication is from this period. Thanks for your interest. I've put comments on your editing at the place of your explanation on my talk -- is that how it's done? George-Amherst (talk) 20:42, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Months of effort working so long day and nights to help get the word out about a fantastic drug, HU308, destroyed without good explanation.

It would help a heck of a lot if editors had KINDLY guided me. My IQ is over 160. I hold 3 separate undergrad degrees in psychology and languages and a doctor of law. Yet I cannot understand the abrupt manner of writing of editors who say I called any of the companies MY company as if I owned it. there is no link to what they are talking about. whatever it was is gone now thanks to their assumptions that I have a conflict of interest. What I have a conflict with is editors that don't educate to explain and force educated men and women to guess what they are talking about. How would you like me to provide you legal counsel they way you guys provide me assistance? I could be abrupt and short and disparaging as well as totally speak in legalese and make assumptions you understand what I'm saying.

How on earth someone got the idea I have a conflict of interest because as a psychologist I fight alzheimers and study anything that stops inflammation of the brain. For that I and a great product under research for over 30 years are put in wikipedia hell and it is disparaged as not a notable drug. I think you all are insane. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MightyMaven (talkcontribs) 14:08, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

MightyMaven Wikipedia has set a standard for medical/health references that prohibits content based in in vitro work, animal research and individual clinical trials. I deleted most of the content at HU-308 because the references did not qualify. At that time (Nov 2021) I stated clearly my reasons on the Talk page of the article. If there are references that meet WP:MEDRS standards, i.e., reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in journals of good reputation, then information can be added back. As a research biochemist (PhD, MIT; post-doc Sloan-Kettering), when I first started editing articles at Wikipedia I too was using references that did not meet that standard, and had a lot of my efforts reverted. David notMD (talk) 14:24, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you David_notMD!

I greatly appreciate your helpful edits as I am not an editor and know nothing (absolutely zero experience) about editing Wikipedia pages & feel I have been given a serious task with wild assortment of 'experienced editors' giving me often extremely contradicting (often contradicting each other) while offering harsh criticism with absolutely no editing done - even though they say they are expert editors. Its a releif to see that at least one of you is actually focused on editing and giving actual specific editing instructions - instead of just attacks. I can see that there are actual real 'editors' on Wikipedia and there are people who just want to attack and do nothing else. Thank you for being the former.

The 'notable students' was added at the insistence of a so called 'expert editor' who gave Robert S Langer's page as an example and (like most 'expert' editors talking to me) said that Mike's page needs an abundance more of references to be taken seriously. Of course, I'm doing what these editors tell me since they say they have years of experience doing this and it is 100% up to them on what is correct/incorrect/accepted/rejected when submitted - even though it is sometimes impossible to sort through who to listen to as there is mostly just attacks and very little actual 'editing' done by 'said' super editors. Your stars related to editing are well-earned.

If you (or any of your trusted friends) see any additional errors on Mike's page - anything -, kindly please let me know how to correct so I can fix before submitting again.

Huge appreciation for your time and genuine help, McGuire at Stanford Snyderlab (talk) 21:05, 3 February 2022 (UTC)McGuire at Snyderlab[reply]

First, as per obvious, there is distain among the experienced volunteers who help an Teahouse or review articles, to help paid editors. The thinking is that anyone being compensated (directly or indirectly) should be competent. Second, what matters for refs is quality over quantity. Over-referencing daunts reviewers because then they have to identify which are key. Minimally, what is needed is at least three good refs ABOUT a person. Including referencing a person's accomplishments, within reason, is useful information, but adds nothing to Wikipedia' concept of notability. An article is not a CV. Neutral point of view means no laudatory adjectives. Good luck. I believe Snyder has a notable career that justifies an approved article once clutter is reduced. On 'notable students,' Wikipedia would only consider them notable if there were already existing Wikipdia articles about them. And even with that, notability is not contagious. If any of my PhD or post-doc students achieved notability it would mean naught to my putative notability. David notMD (talk) 22:59, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Understood. That explains a lot. I realize now that there must be 'paid' editors who (unlike me) have edited on Wikipedia before. Many of the comments directed to me have assumed that I actually know what I'm doing. At this point, I hope it is clear that I am a beginner & this is the first Wikipedia page I've ever attempted to 'edit'. When Fiddle Faddle kept saying "You... need to relearn,..."You... etc..", It seemed that he was directing this to me, so I was hesitant to respond to him 'elsewhere' - like on his talk page, yet I wanted to acknowledge his comments. I'm beginning to remove all the clutter and hope I can streamline the entire page & change it to a much more neutral tone. Thanks! McGuire at Stanford Snyderlab (talk) 22:52, 6 February 2022 (UTC)McGuire at Snyderlab[reply]

McGuire at Snyderlab FYI - Wikipedia has a dark history of people offering services as editors for hire who guarantee they can create articles. This includes legitimate efforts and outright fraud. In some instances, editors for hire created more than one account, so that it would appear that different people were working to create an article = sockpuppetry. Accounts caught out as being undeclared paid editors or sockpuppets are indefinitely blocked. On a different note, having a photo of Snyder does not contribute to notability. And Wikipedia is VERY strict about copyright, which is held by the photographer, not the subject. When this is accepted, you can take photos of Snyder, post those at Commons, and then use in the article. David notMD (talk) 23:07, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for explaining that. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to deal with 'sockpuppets' and such. I'm not concerned about the photo & will research that process after getting the bloat out of the text & fixing all the reference issues later this month. Thanks so much. Growth Team Features

Hello, David! If you're not MD, then who are you?

The English Wikipedia has been experimenting with the Growth Team Features; it's been posted to the Teahouse talk a bit, so you might be aware. One of these new features is a mentorship program, where new users are assigned an experienced editor that they can directly contact for guidance if needed. This feature is given to 2% of users, but they're currently in the talks of bumping it up to 80% or higher. We have about 50-ish users signed up as mentors, so I'm reaching out to other people (including you, if you didn't catch on) to see if they want to join in to help lighten the load of questions each mentor will receive. The questions you'll get is nothing you haven't seen before at the Teahouse, only this time it's posted to your talk page (see mine for examples) and you might see the same user more than once. If you're interested in signing up, please do so here. Panini!🥪 14:15, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Back in the days of forums there was a person with whom I disagreed with on science topics, who went by David MD. My User page confirms that I am not MD, but have another useful degree. I am willing to experiment with the mentor process, with more tact than I sometimes show at Teahouse. David notMD (talk) 14:41, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. For some reason, "MD = Medical Degree" did not click in my mind. I should catch up on acronyms. For example, I have no idea what "tfw" stands for. Panini!🥪 15:35, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Long Slog for David W. Orr

David MD, Thanks for your feedback on editing David Orr's talk page. I'm gaining a whole new understanding and respect for Wikipedia. Thanks for volunteering to be a host. Keep Colorado Wild Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 22:26, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Colorado Wild Early on, Wikipedia was plagued by people offering article writing for hire, as in WP:UPE, scams (guaranteeing an article but not doing anything), even sabotage (starting a deletion process using one account and offering to save the article using a different account). Also rampant vandalism and |sockpuppets (multiple accounts). Also lot of content that was not referenced, so no way to find out if true or not. The last included people creating articles about themselves. For all of these 'disease' Wikipedia developed defenses. So, new editors run into all types of invisible guidelines and rules, and get frustrated. I agree Orr's article can be improved/updated. What I recommend is prioritize and not all at once. Draft a modest amount of content to add in your Sandbox with a reference or references. Then, on the Talk page of the article, start a new section and paste therein what you want to see added, and where in the article. Include the words edit request inside double curly brackets {{ }} template. Doing that 'flags' your edit request to attract attention to a bevy of volunteer editors who help with this task. Maybe weeks go by, but it will be acted on. David notMD (talk) 08:50, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Make a Difference Foundation Submission

Hi David notMD,

You recently commented on Teahouse on the topic of my latest AfC submission,

"More than half the refs are mentions of Wilipedia-notable people who are "ambassadors" for the foundation. These do not contribute to the article's notability."

  • I believe it is relevant that the Ambassadors are mentioned in the AfC draft, as they have media presence and are famous within Australian society.
  • No suggestion was made as to whether or not the article became more notable after their addition; the Ambassadors were added because they are a large part of the outward face of the organisation.

"Other refs are to the foundations's website. A lot of content is not referenced"

  • I noted in the talk page that some sources aren't possible to be completely externally-sourced with "The non-independent ones which remain have been de-personalised in tone; I have changed the language around the point at which they are referenced to reflect the facts them as statements".
  • Which sections do you believe need referencing? I thought that all the sections contained references; I am more than happy to make additions.

Kind regards, DC D.C. at MAD Foundation Inc. (talk) 01:20, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

D.C. at MAD Foundation Inc. Naming the ambassadors and their activities contributes nothing toward notability. (Notability is not contagious.) As other editors commented, lots of content without references. Refs 1 & 3 confirm MAD exists - do not contribute to notability. Refs 2 and 5 are to MAD - do not contribute to notability. Refs 6 onward are about the ambassadors, ditto. That leave #4, which is not enough. David notMD (talk) 02:18, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DavidnotMD,

Notability is not in contention for this particular article - that has been the opinion of several editors to whom I have spoken.

Notability is not grounds for removing references either; why mention this? I am not attacking your point, I'm just wanting to clarify why this is being brought up.

Kind regards, D.C. at MAD Foundation Inc. (talk) 04:47, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

D.C. at MAD Foundation Inc. In my opinion, notability has not been confirmed by the existing references. You are free to revert my edit (View history, and then Undo on the line of my edit) and I will cease from editing and commenting. David notMD (talk) 09:46, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do I find sandbox? --Yeetboi7789 (talk) 02:39, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yeetboi7789. There are two. At left side menu, click on Help and enter Sandbox. This will show you how to connect to the general sandbox. You can practice stuff there, for example creating a reference. The general Sandbox is blanked several times a day. The second is at the top right menu. This is your Sandbox. You can also practice stuff or work on stuff there. Content remains until you blank it. Any other questions? David notMD (talk) 09:45, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A problem editor

To Bbb23, Liz, DMacks and Explicit. User:Wikipedian India posed a question at Teahouse, That led to a look at the editor's User page, where there is a list of articles created. It appears that Wikipedia Indian wants to crate an article for every India soldier slain. I am copying all of you, as Admins, as each of you have acted on Wikipedia Indian's articles in the past. Quite an impressive article! Thank you for your contributions :) As you probably know, an editor of your experience can go ahead and move drafts directly to the mainspace instead of waiting for the often months-long queue - but there is nothing stopping you from continuing to use AfC if it is your preference. Liance Yes, >40,000 edits, but only my third attempt at creating an article. Planning to send it to AfC made me be more conscientious. I am going to let this 'age' for four months, then with fresh eyes, prep for a GA nomination. David notMD (talk) 11:40, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

citation needed

About your comment here about leaving the citation needed rather than deleting. I find that the prevailing attitude in the circle of editors who work with medical articles the most is that statements without citations must be immediately deleted. This is not exactly my belief, but it is the prevailing one. It is what it is. MarshallKe (talk) 12:38, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

PRODs

Hello, David notMD,

You recently added some PROD tags to articles but they are undated so it is unlikely that they will appear 7 days from when they were tagged for admins to see them. It's really simple if, instead of writing out a tag, you use Twinkle to tag pages for deletion because it will include all of the necessary information which is needed so that the pages are categorized appropriately. If you could retag these pages then they will show up on the PROD lists and appropriate categories. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 16:50, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you and will do. David notMD (talk) 16:51, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Vitamin A

The article Vitamin A you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Vitamin A for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Speedy deletion of user pages

I see that you recently removed a speedy deletion tag from a user page, with the edit summary "Requesting a Speedy delete of your own User page is wrong. You can delete content, but the UP stays." I have no idea why you think that, but it is perfectly acceptable for an editor to request deletion of their user page. There is no prohibition whatever on a user deciding that they no longer want everything they have ever put on their user page to be publicly visible in the page history. See Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#U1. JBW (talk) 08:19, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi sir actually i just looked out that you edited Hillwoods Academy wikipedia page and i'm extremely thankful to you for that but one thing i didn't understood is that why did you removed the origin catergory how is it promotional please check it out once again still if you think that there's something wrong then please suggest me how can i specify the foundation stone and inaugrals.

Thanks in Advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Divyanshu Tejwani (talkcontribs) 10:46, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Divyanshu Tejwani: I should have given another reason for the deletion. The reference is the Hillwoods Academy website. That is considered a primary source, which is valid for simple facts (year of founding, number of students, names of faculty, etc.) but not subjective, laudatory language. Second, the text in Origins is an exact quote. That represents a copyright infringement. I used that second reason to delete other content. David notMD (talk) 10:53, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ok thanks sir for your advise so shall i rewrite the origin catergory but in my own words? is that okay? Divyanshu Tejwani (talk) 12:50, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Divyanshu Tejwani In your own words is the right approach. Avoid works such as "life mission, novel, phenominal, excellent..." Also, if you are personnally affiliated with Hillwoods, see WP:COI and WP:PAID to learn if either apply. David notMD (talk) 12:56, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
