Sandbox (stylised as S&box)) is an upcoming sandbox game developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve. Regarded as a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, the base game has no set objective, but instead provides players with a platform from which to develop and play different user-created gamemodes.

Gameplay
S&box is a physics-based sandbox game that, in its base game mode, has no set objectives. The player is able to spawn non-player characters, ragdolls, and props, and interact with them by various means.

User-created content
Much alike its predecessor, S&box provides a platform from which user-created content can be shared among the playerbase. Unlike Garry's Mod, which depended on the mounting of base Source engine content from other Source engine games such as Counter-Strike: Source or Portal, S&box provides a standalone experience from which players can participate in user-created gamemodes and the original Sandbox gamemode has been de-emphasised by the developer.

Team Fortress: Source 2
An unofficial remake of Team Fortress 2 within the Source 2 engine is currently underway under the title Team Fortress: Source 2 (alternatively abbreviated as TF: S2), with the first development blog post released in August 2021 by the team, Amper Software. Work on the remake continues with the developers providing frequent updates and undertaking community beta testing.

Development and release
The predecessor to S&box, Garry's Mod was first released in 2004 by Garry Newman as a mod for the Source game engine and, principally, the game Half-Life 2.Although Garry's Mod was initially a side-project, Newman later set aside his other work-in-progress, Facewound to focus on the mod's development and through 2004 and 2005, released several updated versions of Garry's Mod, adding new features and culminating in version 9.0.4 on 27 November 2005. Newman's one-man operation grew to a team of multiple people for a remake of the mod as a standalone game.

Valve, the developers of Source and Half-Life 2, contacted Newman to suggest a commercial, standalone release of the mod through their digital distribution service Steam, which Newman initially rejected. Valve and Facepunch later struck a publishing agreement wherein Valve would release Garry's Mod onto Steam at a price of , while the two companies would equally split profits. The last free version of Garry's Mod remained available for download, rechristened as the demo to the retail game. The standalone game was released on 29 November 2006. Despite the game no longer being a mod, Valve and Facepunch stuck with the "Garry's Mod" name, which Newman later cited as a mistake, stating that he should have called it "Sandbox" instead.

Garry Newman stated Facepunch was working on a Garry's Mod sequel in late 2015 with a focus on virtual reality. It was formally announced in 2017 as being developed on Unreal Engine 4, but development was paused in 2019 and later shifted to Valve's Source 2 engine in March 2020. A public release was planned for the second half of 2021, with a select group already having received early access to its closed beta, while further waves of developers have been provided with keys on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Gameplay

A comparison between Team Fortress 2 (top) and the upcoming fan remake Team Fortress: Source 2 (bottom) - observe the difference in lighting shaders & shadow effects.

An unofficial remake of Team Fortress 2 within the Source 2 engine is currently underway under the title Team Fortress: Source 2 (alternatively abbreviated as TF: S2), with the first development blog post released in August 2021 by the team, Amper Software.[1] Work on the remake continues with the developers providing frequent updates and undertaking community beta testing.[2] [3]

Development and release

The predecessor to S&box, Garry's Mod was first released in 2004 by Garry Newman as a mod for the Source game engine and, principally, the game Half-Life 2.[4][5]Although Garry's Mod was initially a side-project, Newman later set aside his other work-in-progress, Facewound to focus on the mod's development and through 2004 and 2005, released several updated versions of Garry's Mod, adding new features and culminating in version 9.0.4 on 27 November 2005.[6][7] Newman's one-man operation grew to a team of multiple people for a remake of the mod as a standalone game.[4]

Valve, the developers of Source and Half-Life 2, contacted Newman to suggest a commercial, standalone release of the mod through their digital distribution service Steam, which Newman initially rejected.[4] Valve and Facepunch later struck a publishing agreement wherein Valve would release Garry's Mod onto Steam at a price of US$10, while the two companies would equally split profits.[8] The last free version of Garry's Mod remained available for download, rechristened as the demo to the retail game.[8][9] The standalone game was released on 29 November 2006.[10][11] Despite the game no longer being a mod, Valve and Facepunch stuck with the "Garry's Mod" name, which Newman later cited as a mistake, stating that he should have called it "Sandbox" instead.[12]

Garry Newman stated Facepunch was working on a Garry's Mod sequel in late 2015 with a focus on virtual reality.[13] It was formally announced in 2017 as being developed on Unreal Engine 4,[14] but development was paused in 2019 and later shifted to Valve's Source 2 engine in March 2020.[15][16][17] A public release was planned for the second half of 2021,[18] with a select group already having received early access to its closed beta,[19] while further waves of developers have been provided with keys on a first-come, first-serve basis. In Sandbox, players can pick from many gamemodes similar to Garry's Mod.[20] The game uses C# as a backend for user-created content.[21] Newman has stated among the improvements are entity physics, lighting and water effects.
