On 13 April 2024, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), in coordination with the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces,[22] Lebanese group Hezbollah, and the Yemeni Houthis, launched attacks on Israel[a] codenamed Operation True Promise[23] (Persian: وعده صادق, romanizedva'de-ye sādeq),[24] using drones, cruise and ballistic missiles. The retalitory attacks were launched in response to the Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus on 1 April, that killed 16 people.[25] The retaliatory strikes were the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since the beginning of the Iran–Israel proxy war.

On 14 April, Iran's envoy to the United Nations said that the attacks "can be deemed concluded."[26] The Israel Defense Forces reported that Iran launched over 300 projectiles, including around 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles, the vast majority it claimed was successfully intercepted,[27][28] mostly by the Arrow 3[29] and David's sling[30] interception system. Only one person, an Israeli Bedouin child, was reported injured due to being hit by part of a missile. Thirty-one other people suffered accidental self-inflicted minor injuries while rushing to protected areas.

The United States, United Kingdom and Jordan assisted Israel by using their own forces to intercept Iranian projectiles,[31][32] and France deployed its navy.[33]

Iran's attacks have drawn criticism from world leaders and political analysts, who warn they risk escalating into a full-blown regional war.[34][35][36][37]

Background

On 7 October 2023, Hamas, a militant organization supported by Iran, carried out an attack in southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals.[38] Israel responded by launching the ongoing Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, which, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, has resulted in the deaths of more than 33,000 people so far, during which Iran has accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians of Gaza.[39][40]

After 7 October, the Iranian-backed proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon began attacking northern Israel.[41] There have been over 4,400 violent incidents recorded between Hezbollah and Israel since the start of the war,[42] and approximately 100,000 Israelis have been evacuated from northern Israel since the beginning of the conflict.[43]

On 1 April 2024, the Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, was struck by an Israeli airstrike, killing 16 people, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior Quds Force commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and seven other IRGC officers. Soon after the attack, Iran vowed revenge,[44] with reports suggesting this as a potential motive for the airstrike.[45] Iran claimed the building was part of the embassy compound, while Israel maintained it was a building used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and located outside the fenced compound of the embassy.[46][47] Numerous countries and international organizations condemned the attack; the United States denied involvement or prior knowledge.[48]

In the weeks preceding the attack, the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom all warned Iran not to attack Israel, stating that such an attack would be a major escalation and could lead to a military response by the West against Iran.[49][50][51] Iran was warned by Israel that such an attack could lead to a direct Israeli military response on Iranian soil.[52] Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Kuwait have reportedly[according to whom?] taken steps to prevent the US from using its bases in their territories for a possible attack against Iran.[53][54] In early April 2024, Iran threatened to attack United States military bases if it intervened to defend Israel.[55][56]

Events

The Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, is currently conducting a situational assessment at the Israeli Air Force Operations Center in the Kirya with the Commanding Officer of the Israeli Air Force, the Commanding Officer of the Operations Directorate, and the Commanding Officer of the Intelligence Directorate. During the situational assessment, the defensive and offensive activity of the last few hours were presented, as well as plans for the continuation.

13 April

Iran launched a massive drone and missile attack targeting Israel on the evening of 13 April 2024.[57][58][59] The attack consisted of more than 200 missiles and drones according to the Washington Post[57][58][60][61] and included ballistic missiles according to Iranian news agency IRNA.

The attacks were in coordination with the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces,[62] Lebanese group Hezbollah,[2] and the Yemeni Houthis.[1] The attack was codenamed Operation True Promise[63] (Persian: وعده صادق, romanizedva'de-ye sādeq),[64] Drones, cruise and ballistic missiles were employed.[8] Some of the released videos indicated the use of Shahed 136 drones.[65]

American and British warplanes shot down an unspecified number of Iranian drones, according to American officials and Israeli Channel 12.[66] The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous French officials, reported that France was deploying naval assets to assist Israel.[7]

Early reports

In the early minutes of the attack, Israeli officials estimated that around 100 drones had been launched,[67] while a US official predicted that 400 to 500 drones and missiles would be launched from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, though the majority would be from Iran.[68] The presence of missiles was possible.[8][69] While the attack was still in progress, ABC News reported that Israel said that only military sites had been targeted.[70]

14 April

Hezbollah said it launched dozens of Grad rockets at an Israeli air defense site in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The group said the attack took place shortly after midnight local time.[2]

At approximately 2:00 a.m. local time, explosions were heard in Jerusalem, while air raid sirens sounded across Israel, the West Bank, and the Dead Sea. It is unknown whether the explosions were interceptions by the Iron Dome or missile strikes.[71] Iranian missiles above the Al-Aqsa Mosque were intercepted.[72] Tel Aviv and Dimona, which is home to a nuclear facility, were also targeted.[73] A 10-year-old Bedouin girl was seriously injured by shrapnel from an interception in the Arad area,[74][20] and a seven-year-old girl was critically injured.[75] At least 31 others were treated for injuries sustained while going to protected areas or for anxiety.[21]

Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait and Israel all closed their airspace in response to the attacks, with Iranian airspace being closed to VFR only flights,[76][77][78] Egypt put its air defense on high alert.[79] Contrary to media reports, Jordan did not announce a state of emergency.[80] Iran warned Jordan against providing any possible support for Israel.[81]

During the attack, the IDF jammed electronic guidance systems to disrupt missile navigation.[82]

Residents in Amman, the capital of Jordan, reported seeing flashes in the sky above the city.[83] In the city's Marj al Hamam area, residents gathered around the remains of a large drone that had been intercepted.[84]

According to Tasnim News Agency, one of the primary targets was the airbase from which Israel launched the attack on the Iranian consulate.[85] Other targets include the Ramon Airbase in the south of Israel.[86] The source published videos of targets being hit.[85]

According to the IDF, Iran launched over 170 drones, 30+ cruise missiles, and 120+ ballistic missiles, with 99% of them successfully intercepted.[87] IDF jets struck military targets in southern Lebanon belonging to Hezbollah's Radwan forces.[88]

The Israel Defense Forces reported that Iran launched over 300 projectiles, including around 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles, the vast majority it claimed was successfully intercepted,[87][89] mostly by the Arrow 3[90] and David's sling[91] interception system. Oe person, an Israeli child, was injured and was described to be in a serious condition due to being hit by part of a missile.[92] Thirty-one other people suffered accidental self-inflicted minor injuries while rushing to protected areas.[21]

The United States, United Kingdom and Jordan assisted Israel by using their own forces to intercept Iranian projectiles,[93][84] and France deployed its navy.[94]

Aftermath

Hours after the beginning of the attacks, Iran's envoy to the United Nations stated that the retaliatory attack "can be deemed concluded", and that Iran will respond with "stronger and more resolute" actions if Israel "make another mistake". It also urged the US to stay away from the Iran-Israel conflict.[95][89][96]

Reactions

US President Joe Biden and his national security administration assessing the attack in the Situation Room.

Iraq, Jordan, and Israel reopened their airspace soon after.[97][98]

Canada also condemned the attack, and the United States said it would support Israel's defense.[99] Saudi Arabia called for restraint, and said that the United Nations Security Council must take responsibility for maintaining peace and security in the region.[83] Argentine President Javier Milei ordered the closure of the country's embassies in the Middle East, evacuations of its nationals and cancelled a trip to Denmark, while offering Argentina's "unwavering" support to "Israel's right to defend herself."[100][101]

Demonstrations broke out in cities across Iran and in the Gaza Strip[102] in support of the strikes.[103]

On 14 April, protestors in Toronto cheered the airstrikes, chanting "Allahu Akbar!" A protest leader characterized the strikes as a response to Israeli airstrikes in the region, while Melissa Lantsman, a member of parliament, said that the chants showed "It was never about a ceasefire". Other chants included "Intifada, Intifada, long live the Intifada" and "From the water to the water, Palestine is Arab".[104]

Israel

Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant said IDF halted the attack impressively.[105] Israel vowed "a significant response" to Iran's retaliation.[106]

United Kingdom

One of the first leaders to respond to the attack was British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, stating “The UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq”.[107] The United Kingdom condemned the Iranian attack on Israel as "reckless".[108] Sunak emphasised that "the UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security".[109]

United States

US President Joe Biden shortened a planned visit to Delaware and returned to the White House to meet with national security officials.[110] Biden called the intercepted attacks a win for Israel.[111][112] The Embassy of the United States in Jerusalem posted a security alert urging its workers to seek shelter until further notice.[113] Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States would not back Israel in a possible future counter-attack against Iran.[114][115] U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin asked Israel to give the United States advanced notice if they plan to attack Iran.[116]

Cyprus

On 13 April, President Nikos Christodoulides called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Council which was held on 14 April to discuss the developments in the region.[117][118] Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack on Israel.[119] Two flights (One belonging to Wizz Air and one to Royal Jordanian) were diverted to airports in Cyprus as a result of the attack.[120] The Cyprus Air Command alongside the two main airports on Cyprus were also placed on high alert as a result of the attack.[121]

Other countries

  •  Argentina: President Javier Milei expressed "solidarity and unwavering commitment" to Israel, and said he "emphatically support the State of Israel in the defense of its sovereignty". Milei promised "the Argentine Republic will always be on [Israel's] side."[122]
  •  Canada: Prime MInister Justin Trudeau said that Canada unequivocally condemns Iran’s attacks against Israel, stands with Israel, and recognizes Israel’s right to defend itself from the attacks.[123]
  •  Germany: Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the Iranian attack as "unjustifiable and highly irresponsible", and assured that "Germany stands by Israel".[124]
  •  United Nations: Secretary-General António Guterres "strongly condemned" the escalation represented by Iran's attack.[125]
