On July 13, 2024, former United States president Donald Trump was injured in a shooting at a rally he held at a Farm Show venue in Butler, Pennsylvania.[1] According to witnesses and video footage, he appeared to have been bleeding from his right ear after the shooting.[2] Witnesses and reporters stated that multiple shots were fired.[3][4] According to New York Times photographer Doug Mills, who was at the scene, three to four gunshots were heard.[5] The Times also reported that a rallygoer could have been hit by a ricocheting bullet, noting that blood was visible in the left-hand bleachers at the venue.[6]

Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 United States presidential election.[7]

Aftermath

United States Secret Service agents lunged at Trump as he raised his fist in defiance and was then escorted to a vehicle.[8] A spokesman for the Secret Service confirmed that "an incident occured" and affirmed that Trump was "safe".[9] He was shortly afterwards examined at a local medical facility, according to campaign spokesman Steven Cheung who also affirmed that Trump was "fine".[10]

Responses

President Joe Biden received a briefing on the incident.[11]

Representative Ruben Gallego,[12] Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer,[13] and Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro issued statements denouncing political violence.

Businessman Elon Musk expressed his support for Trump after the shooting.[14]

On X, supporters of Trump noted violent rhetoric surrounding Trump.[15]
