The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a modern, fly-by-wire regional jet in the 75- to 95-seat category. The Superjet 100 will be produced by Russian aerospace firm Sukhoi's civil division, of which Finmeccanica of Italy owns 25%.[2] The jet is being developed in collaboration with Finmeccanica subsidiary Alenia Aeronautica. Italian design group Pininfarina will design optional interiors.[3]
Design
The Superjet-100 (SSJ-100, formerly known as RRJ [4]) is designed to compete against the Embraer E-Jets and the Bombardier CSeries programs. Sukhoi's director general Mikhail Pogosyan claims the SSJ will have 10-15% lower operation costs than its Embraer or Bombardier counterparts and its wider cabin will offer more comfort; at the catalogue price of $27.8 mln, it should also be cheaper by 18-22%. On the other hand, both Embraer and Bombardier offer much more comprehensive after-sales and maintenance network.[5]
The three variants were originally called the RRJ-60, RRJ-75 and RRJ-95, with the numbers designating the average passenger capacity of each type. However, with the renaming of the project to "Superjet 100", the RRJ-75 was relabelled the "Superjet 100-75" (or SSJ 100-75 for short), while the RRJ-95 became known as the "SSJ 100-95". The smallest variant the "SSJ 100-60" was temporary postponed and efforts are currently concentrating on the largest variant, with the smaller "SSJ 100-75" to follow later on. A longer "SSJ 100-110" and "SSJ 100-125"is also projected.[6]
The Superjet 100 airliner family is being developed based on the principle of maximum standardization of frame assemblies and systems, viz: wings, fins, chassis, engine unit, crew cabin, basic aircraft systems and component parts. The standardization of the design will make it possible to improve the economic performance of the aircraft family operation with expenditures kept at a rational level.
The aerodynamics and design of the aircraft of the family are based on proven advanced technology to minimise technical risks at the stage of design, testing and operation. To broaden the customer base among airlines, each of the three standard sizes of the aircraft in the family has a basic and an LR modification designed for use on a network of various length routes to make it possible for airlines to improve the economic performance of their operations through a more balanced composition of their fleets based on the route structure and passenger flows.
SSJ-100 designed to allow its passengers to experience the mainline level of comfort. The fuselage cross-section increases the aisle width up to 20.08”, offering optimal aisle height combined with five-abreast seat configuration. The height of the ceiling totals 83.46”, while each seat is 18.31” wide.
SSJ100 designed to be easy and safe to pilot. The cockpit design features a “passive” side stick and “active” engine control levers. The Human Centered Design concept perfectly arranges the control levers and on-board equipment. SSJ100 can be landed by one pilot only. Dark and Quiet Cockpit offers precise, convenient and reliable piloting. Sukhoi Superjet 100 features fully electronic fly-by-wire control system for piloting, landing gear extension and retraction, and a break system to prove its high maintainability and weight perfection. [7]
New PowerJet SaM146 engine developed by PowerJet to meet the highest performance and eco requirements. A strong focus was put on engine maintainability. Now the blades can be replaced with engine on the wing. Owing to the new modular design, the engine employs 20% less parts, which significantly streamlines maintenance operations.
Fuel efficiency is secured by the third generation supercritical airfoil wing and excellent local aerodynamics. All this combined with perfectly balanced aircraft control laws in autopilot mode add to fuel consumption savings. Weight perfection and the SaM146 engine, tailored for this aircraft family, reduce fuel consumption per seat by 10% compared to its rivals.
Noise and emissions levels of SSJ100 meet the strictest ecological demands and surpass the highest existing and future ICAO requirements.
Strategic partner: Alenia Aeronautica; Risk-sharing partner: Snecma; Consultant: Boeing; Aircraft Main System Suppliers: Thales, Leibherr, Messier Dowty, Intertechnique, B/E Aerospace, Autronics, Honeywell, Ipeco, Parker, Hamilton Sundstrand, Vibro-Meter, Goodrich.
The design meets the specific requirements of airlines in Russia, the CIS, and western countries, and conforms to the Aviation Rules AP-25, FAR-25, JAR-25 requirements, and to the ground noise level requirements under ICAO Chapter 4 and FAR 36 Section 4 standards entering into force during 2006.
Development and delivery schedule
The deliveries were scheduled to begin in late 2008, and Sukhoi predicted that 163 units of all variations of the Superjet 100 would be delivered by the end of 2016.[8] On July 7, 2008, Sukhoi officially confirmed that the original schedule was too optimistic, and first deliveries are to be started in the third quarter of 2009.[9] [10]
In the middle of February 2008, the SaM146 initial engine runs went successfully, gearing up for the maiden flight. This occurred at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Manufacturing Association. The engine test followed a test on an Ilyushin Il-76, a testbed aircraft for the Gromov Flight Research Institute. It is expected to be certified and flying by November.[11]
The jet was unveiled at its official rollout at Dzemgi Airport, Komsomolsk-on-Amur on 26 September 2007.[12] The first test flight took place on 19 May 2008 also at the Dzemgi airport. [13]The first Superjet spent 1 hour 5 minutes in the air, and reached altitude of 1,200 meters. On 24 December 2008, second plane (with tail number RA95003) joined in test flights.[14]
Initially Sukhoi planned to produce the plane in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia, but pressured by airlines and partners is now is considering moving production to European Russia.
Operational history
On 28 January 2007, the first SSJ was transported by an Antonov 124 from Komsomolsk-on-Amur to the city of Zhukovsky near Moscow for ground tests at Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute.[citation needed] A representative of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft announced on 13 November 2007, the completion of static tests necessary for conducting the first flight.[citation needed] The maiden flight was conducted on 19 May 2008.[15]
July 2008, testing continued sucessfuly. [16]
October 2008, the first stage of Sukhoi Superjet 100’s factory-based flight testing program is successfully completed. The second SSJ100 prototype has been powered on. Certification process started. [17]
December 2008, The second of four SSJ100 prototypes SN95003 took to the skies. The airplane performed traditional stability and handling quality as well as systems’ checks in accordance with the first flight assignment. “With a number of software modifications introduced on SN95003 basing on the results of the flight envelope evaluations done on the first prototype, the aircraft demonstrated remarkable stability and handling qualities. Both flight test engineers and pilots are quite pleased with the overall performance of the second prototype. The aircraft looks trouble free and I expect it to join our ongoing certification test campaign at the earliest”, said Leonid Chikunov.[18]
