Klein High School is a public high school located in Klein, a community in unincorporated Harris County, Texas, United States. Its location is an approximate 30 minute drive from downtown Houston. As a part of the Klein Independent School District, it offers a comprehensive curriculum for students in grades 9–12.

History of Klein High School

In July 1928, five common school districts in the area were consolidated into Rural High School District Number One. The new district's high school building was located at what is now 7200 Spring-Cypress Road, between Kuykendahl Road and Stuebner Airline Road. This building is now behind the district's central office building. In 1938, Rural High School District Number One became Klein Independent School District, and its high school became Klein High School[2]. The high school moved to its current location in 1963. It is currently being rebuilt.

The Future of Klein High School

Due to a bond election to be held on May 10, 2008, among many items affecting the district, in order to improve security and bring buildings up to code, 11 of KHS's 15 buildings have been proposed to be destroyed in 2011 in order to build a new, single building to replace the 11 destroyed ones. The plan is to move the staff and students to High School #5 (also proposed in the bond) and proceed with the project, and move them back to the new building in 2013. The cost is projected to be over $130 million, to be along with proposed high school #5 also at $130 million, putting these two schools as the most expensive high schools in the Houston area. The only other high school plan to come close is Cypress-Fairbanks plan for a new high school in 2011 at just under $100 million.[3] As stated earlier, the fate of those 11 buildings including the Main Building, Auditorium, Career Center, LTSC, Homemaking, Dance, High Rise, Aux Gym, Cafeteria & Commons, all T-buildings, and a 1971 addition to the main building, all were decided on May 10, 2008 with the passing of the bond by a close margin of 100 votes. The student population and residents in the KHS attendance zone have mixed feelings about the decision, wanting to preserve their school, but also realizing the need to replace the old sub-standard buildings.[4]

Revision of New Klein High School Project

According to KleinTouch, the proposed klein high school project had been put on hold during 2009 due to the economy and the repairs needed to be made at Epps Island Elementary from a fire. It is likely that the graduating class of 2012 would be the last class from the original Klein High School. The new Klein High School might open in the 2012-13 school year making the class of 2013 the first graduating class from the new high school. As of now, Klein ISD had not published when they are going to resume the new high school project. In 2009 Klein ISD announced that they were changing the bond program due to the cost of opening a 150 million Dollor 5th High School. The 5th high school site was to be the new permanent Klein High School site. Imeaditly after making the announcement the Residents in the Klein High School Attendance zone pettitioned the district to rebuild Klein at its current site with students attending the school while the school is being rebuilt. The new Klein High School will be designed by SHW Group and will be built by Tellepson Contractors. The new Klein High School will be a 4 story structure with 3 gyms, an auditoruim, LGI(Theaching Theatre), Black Box Theatre, Band Hall, Orchestra Hall, and Choir Building. A new courtyard will be built between the two classroom wings. This will be a multi-phased project with the final phase to be completed in 2013. [5] [6]

Extracurricular activities

Football

The varsity football team is coached by Shane Hallmark. The 2008 team finished the season with a 4-4 record (4-3 in district play), and got into the playoffs with Klein Forest's win over Klein Collins. The Bearkats traveled to Lufkin in the first round of the playoffs, with the embarrassing 70+ point loss of 2 years ago fresh in their minds. The Bearkats after a less-than spectacular 1st half rallied to tie the game 22-22, but lost in the last 8 seconds from a caught touchdown pass 28-22.

The 2009 Bearkat Football team, coached by Stan Labay, made to the state semifinals for the first time since 1995, with wins against Lufkin (27 21), Cy Ridge (24 14), South Garland (24 0), and John Tyler (31 7). They upset Lufkin 27-21 in the first round of the playoffs, one source called it "their biggest victory this decade"[10]. The win set shockwaves around the state. In their game against John Tyler, they held a team that averaged 45 points per game to only 7 points and defeated a team that was ranked in the state top 10. Their "Cinderella story" season ended with a 29-21 loss to Abilene. With a poor performance in the first three quarters down 29-7, the Bearkats rallied to within 8 points for a tie. The Klein defense was able to stop Abilene with 9 seconds remaining in the game. Quarterback Michael West threw a pass to Dekota Barnes for 40 yards, and the Bearkats rushed to the line in time to spike the ball with 1 second remaining. West then completed a pass to Johnny Family at the 7 yard line, and was brought down to within 3 inches of the goal line by 3 Abilene defenders. The rally covered over 90 yards in 9 seconds.[11] The Bearkats finished their incredible season 11 and 4.

The Bearkat soccer team, headed by Coach John Lawhon, has won three state championships: 1997 (ranked #2 nationally), 1999 (National Champions) and 2005 (ranked #3 nationally). Coach Baker (2005 National High School Coach of the Year) has won over 600 games as a soccer coach, placing him in the top ten nationally among coaches. Klein made it again to the State finals in soccer in 2008, but lost to Flower Mound Marcus 3-0. This year (2008–2009) Klein High School is currently ranked 8th Nationally and is also a constant playoff contender year in and year out.[13]

The boys baseball team is coached by Barry Smith. The team won the state championship in 1998, and routinely competes in the state playoffs year in and year out.

The 2009 Bearkat Football team upset Lufkin 27-21 in the first round of the playoffs, one source called it "their biggest victory this decade"[10]. The win was a complete upset, and the Klein Bearkats currently find themselves in the 5th round of the Texas 5A playoffs, the farthest the team has gone since 1999 and Coach Labay's first as Klein's head coach.

In the fall of 2007, the varsity tennis team coached by Holly Cannon defeated the defending state champion Plano West in regionals but proceeded to lose in the state tournament 10-9 to the eventual state champions. In 2008, the tennis team again won regionals but, like before, they lost in the state tournament. Johnathan Alexander and Lauren Santacroce won two consecutive Texas 5A State Mixed-Doubles Championships in 2007 and 2008 and finished with a combined two-year record of 57-0. In 2009, Klein has once again qualified for the state tournament.

The school was District 2006 Athletic Champions in Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Team Tennis, Spring Tennis, Swimming, Boys Soccer and Girl’s Soccer.[7]
