Almost all the engineering, pharmacy, architecture and most of the colleges offering MBA, MCA, M.Tech, M.Pharma degree programmes are either constituent or affiliated colleges of BPUT. Located at Jail Road, Chhend Colony Rourkela, Orissa, India, the university has a beautiful campus with excellent infrastructure and support facilities for its staff and students. Thus the main objective of instituting the University was to ensure a high quality of students coming out of the technical colleges through a common curriculum and uniform evaluation.

When Biju Patnaik University of Technology was established, only five colleges existed:Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla founded in 1956, College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar founded in 1981, Orissa School of Mining Engineering, Keonjhar founded in 1956, Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar founded in 1968 & Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology Sarang founded in 1982 were there, under state govt. of Orissa & few other private engineering & management institutes which was run under Sambalpur University, in Orissa.

Though the colleges are all constituent to the Biju Patnaik University of Technology, depending on the funding and the management the colleges can be classified into three types – the University maintained colleges, the trust colleges and the Orissa Government colleges. Of the Orissa Government colleges seven are 100 per cent funded by the State Government of Orissa and were founded in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

The total number of colleges under the University goes up to 160 if you include the colleges that run the professional courses.
