The 2012 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 5 or the IPL 2012, is the fifth season of the Indian Premier League, initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)[2] in 2007 with the first season played in 2008. The tournament began on 4 April and will end on 27 May 2012.[3] This season the number of teams in the league went from ten to nine with the termination of Kochi Tuskers Kerala.[4]

Termination of Kochi

The IPL Committee has terminated the IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala after breaching the BCCI's terms of conditions. Under the terms of the agreement, each franchise has to submit a bank guarantee every year that covers the fee payable to the BCCI. The 2010-founded team was bought for 1,550 crore and the consortium has to pay a bank guarantee of 156 crore every year till 2020.[5] However, KTK's former players will participate in this season's competition after being listed on list of players to be auctioned in the Players' Auction on 4 February 2012.

On 13 January, the BCCI had asked the international players of Kochi Tuskers Kerala to register individual court cases against the owners of the Kochi IPL team with the BCCI included as a party to each case.[6]

Reschedule

On 15 March, the IPL announced that due to the municipal election in Delhi, the playoff schedule was being slightly altered.[12] The sites of the 22 and 23 May matches were swapped, with Pune now hosting the match on 22 May and Bengaluru hosting the match on 23 May. Which match occurs on each date depends on the placement of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final table. If Challengers finish first or second, the Eliminator (third v. fourth places) will be on 22 May and the First Qualifier (first v. second) will be on 23 May. If Challengers finish third or lower, the First Qualifier will be on 22 May and the Eliminator will be on 23 May.[13]

Viewership

The first matches of the season had recorded an average Television Viewership Rating (TVR) of 3.76, 18.7% less than the previous season.[21] The viewership was also reportedly low for the opening ceremony with a rating of 1.3 TVR.[22] The downfall was attributed to the number of matches being played, as the count stands at 76 among 9 teams.[23] The rating continued to fall as the cumulative number of people who tuned in to watch the first 16 games also declined from 127.40 million in 2011 to 122.44 million. The 12th match played between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals drew the highest rating of the season with a rating of 5.2, as of 20 April.[24]
