Awards

There are two different sections for awards, including a table in the main article and another in the sidebar. There are different awards listed in each place, so they should be merged. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.174.121.141 (talk) 14:57, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

League of Legends in the competitive scene controversy

There's alot of controversy surrounding League of Legends in the competitive scene, mostly based around the fact that Riot disallows others to cast their tournaments, Riot buys into most tournaments (Very little third party funding for major tournaments) and as of late is has come out that Riot requires you to sign a contract stating that you WILL not host another ARTS game at your tournament if League of Legends is already being hosted there. I'll edit in some more testimonies as I come across them, I have come across quite a few though. (A few from S2 games and a few from staff at conventions hosting Riot Games' League of Legend

Remove Semi-protected Status

The article desperately needs cleaning up in terms of both grammar (there's a misplaced period in the first sentence) and content (no section on team tactics, no section on map features, no section on items?), and it's now impossible for any passing Riot employee or experienced player to fix it or add to it.107.2.18.40 (talk) 19:34, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will admit that I am new to Wikipedia; but I also see many grammar errors which I would be able to correct. I request that these restrictions be lifted at least for the purpose of literary correctness. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RPrice1988 (talkcontribs) 02:54, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Passing the WP:autoconfirmed is very very easy and grants you edit right to semi-protected articles. If you want immediate improvement please create a new edit request at the bottom of this discussion page. The article itself received tenacious vandalism and link-spamming so I can't request the removal of the protect. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 03:06, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Importance

This game should be mid or high importance IMO in terms of VG wiki importance. It's an extremely popular game now. An example is the xfire most played list. On June 06 at 2:30am PST, the list was:
World of Warcraft 56,206
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Multiplayer 15,702
League of Legends 11,933
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 7,835
Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer 7,123
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer 5,973
Counter-Strike: Source 4,579
Allods Online 4,223
Silkroad Online 4,105
Heroes of Newerth 3,856
(note that most of those are mid or high importance articles)

Another example is that it's gamespot rating, where it is the #4 most played PC game by their metrics. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.175.3.187 (talk) 09:32, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lastly, it was one of the earliest western games that was a hardcore game AND free to play, AND did it in a way that wasn't really 'pay2pwn' (not to mention this gamble was successful) so it's very important from a business history perspective. I think the powers that be in the BG project should consider this for mid standing at least.

From their metrics, I certainly don't think it is high importance. "Series and games that have been shown to have a lasting impact on a genre, culture or the industry itself; typically need a few years to assess this impact. e.g. Pokémon, Final Fantasy (series), Bard's Tale". Take Pokemon for example: this game is nowhere near its cultural penetration.

As for medium, I figured it was too soon to tell. It only came out in October (although beta far before of course), and while it is PHENOMENALLY successful, and certainly groundbreaking in terms of pricing structure...I wasn't sure it was clear cut mid. So I left it at low, but I'd certainly like to see it rated mid. Anyone else have thoughts on this?71.250.13.112 (talk) 03:42, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone moved it to mid. I think between the popularity and it's importance from a business perspective (well executed game that is free to play in the west), Mid is reasonable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.175.3.187 (talk) 15:47, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think at this point a High Importance rating for League of Legends is completely justified. It has had a lot of cultural influence because it is F2P and extremely popular internationally. If you look at the other titles on the Mid Importance page, they really don't stack up to League of Legends' importance. For example, currently "Blaze the Cat" a character from Sonic games is considered mid importance. I think League of Legends is more important than a random Sonic character and at least as important as Call of Duty 4 (which is high importance). League of Legends is paving the way for its own genre and is played more than most other games. It is of high importance, it seems obvious to me... Heeerrresjonny (talk) 15:16, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, this game is now the most played game in the world, as listed on xfire. As of 10/29/11, xfire listed hours played as
League of Legends: 139k
Call of Duty 4: 103k
World of Warcraft: 92k
Battlefield 3: 87k
Call of Duty 2: 53k
Minecraft: 21k

I also agree a High Importance rating is justified SarnXero (talk) 20:59, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There still needs to be improvements in ridding the game cruft from this article. Some of the sources appear dodgy also. This article needs some work so that it could be read by those who have never played League of Legends before, allowing them to understand the topic more rather than content considered only relevant to the actual gamers. Discussion concerning genre

There is a discussion taking place on Talk:Dota (genre)#Merger proposal that I hope can provide more decisive resolutions to:

  • Whether we should have an article for the genre, as it now has a significant number of games in it
  • What the article about the genre should be named, and by extension, what name for the genre should be used on the relevant games' pages

Currently it's mostly been a 2-sided discussion, and I know it's been discussed here in the past, so any input from the contributors given the new climate would be welcome. ~rezecib (talk) 04:53, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tutorial and Practice

In the Gameplay section, in Game modes and matchmaking, it says that Tutorial is a "private offline game session". Although it is private because nobody can join it, I think it's not offline (you're still connected to Riot servers and lag can render the tutorial unplayable if servers are slow). Also, after Tutorial, we talk about "Practice" mode. I haven't played much lately but I think they changed the name to something like "Custom game". Can anyone confirm both things so we can update it? Shorkan (talk) 10:30, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I can confirm that tutorial requires the Riot server connection from personal experience, but it could be a pain to dig up a source. Anyone give me a hand on this? Magma armor0 (talk) 02:17, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation issues

There're at least a couple of punctuation issues.

In the "Fields of Justice" section, the text "(Abilities such as: slowing the enemy and gaining more attack damage, increased damage and increased health regeneration, or an increased mana regeneration and spell cooldown reduction." is lacking the closing parenthesis. Although I think this whole sentence can be removed or simplified.

In the "Champions" section, the text "Some items can be combined into more powerful items by following predefined recipes" is lacking the full stop. Note also that the word "items" in that paragraph is overused. Shorkan (talk) 15:30, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing those out. I've fixed them. If you notice anything else, I'd be happy to correct it. I might comb through the article myself at some point. ~rezecib (talk) 18:38, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Microtransactions

"The game will be supported by microtransactions (the sale of in-game items such as weapons and armor) rather than ads or boxed copy sales.[35]"

ingame items (and also runes) can't be bought with microtransactions. You only can purchase cosmetic stuff (alternate skins and models for the characters you play) and bonuses which affect the meta game (you can earn more points/experience to level up your account which differs from the experience characters gain in-game) for "real life money". Also the reference doesn't work anymore. 93.211.72.245 (talk) 04:02, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

skins and characters can both be purchased. Magma armor0 (talk) 02:15, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Community-based modes

I don't know if it should be added at all, but lately a few community-based modes have appeared in custom games in League of Legends. I'm talking about ARAM (All Random All Mid) and the new and not yet so famous Earth Wind and Fire mode, which basically use a slightly different set of rules than the original game. I can't find the forum posts for the game modes, as the search function requires an US account (to search the US boards) and I'm on EU, but they exist. Edit request from Nimerian, 1 February 2011

{{edit semi-protected}} The recent updates of the game brought very much negative feedback from the game's community. This feedback is being ignored by the developers in almost all cases. One example would be the latest Patch Preview video in you tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2r_HE2wBro) that has 1800 likes and around 5600 dislikes and thousands of disapprovingly comments. I think this is something that should be mentioned on the development part of the article so people will be informed about this issue. Also searching thorough the forums of league of legends (specially under the general discussion sub section) you can find many posts related to these kind of issues. I also want to note that I am an active player of the game and active member of the community. Thank you in advance for your time.

Nimerian (talk) 02:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion that is a bit too specific and time-sensitive. However, I did some looking around, and [1] is a reliable source (according to Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources#General) that covers it, if someone else thinks it really should be added. ~rezecib (talk) 03:13, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

{{edit semi-protected}} inhibitors are NOT new in League of Legends, they have been in DOTA Allstars before they were ever in lol, HOWEVER it is unique that they respawn after a fixed amount of time. the following line needs to be changed:

A new element in League of Legends is the inhibitors. Each lane has an inhibitor on both ends. If a team destroys the enemy inhibitor, more powerful "super minions" will spawn for that side. Unlike turrets, inhibitors respawn after a fixed amount of time.

List of League of Legends Characters + Wiki cleanup

This is sort of a two-part discussion about the article. First, does anyone think there should be a separate "List of League of Legends Characters (or champions)" page, or would that be too bulky and unnecessary? I'm leaning toward the latter, but I figure it would be something to ask.

Also, I'm considering a full rewrite of this article, and I can provide more screenshots as well. I'll probably start working on this next monday or so. I believe parts of the current article are worth keeping, so I will probably save what can be saved, rearrange some things, and remove any unnecessary information. Please leave feedback if you agree or disagree, and why. - Bkid My talk/Contribs 05:51, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think individual character pages would not be a good idea, as they would likely be stubs and may not have enough notability to hold their own pages. Better to leave it to the LOL wiki. As for the re-write, this page really could use a bit of a clean-up... Frohike14 (talk) 22:05, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The game is not a RTS it's a MOBA. If someone can edit it to correctly class the game's genre it would be nice.

I agree with changing it from RTS to MOBA EDIT: I stand by changing it to MOBA: RTS is (in my opinion) a slightly outdated description. Dota is the title of the genre page, but I believe that should also be changed to MOBA, since Dota is too easily confused with the game from which the name derives, DoTA. but this isn't really the talk page for that ;) Anyone else have an opinion? Magma armor0 (talk) 02:27, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the correct genre is MOBA, not DotA. MindWraith (talk) 09:19, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

@All of you: Firstly, it's not an RTS, it's an ARTS, or action realtime strategy game. Secondly, dota and MOBA are both accurate names for the genre, Riot Games simply prefers to call it by MOBA. The press at large generally refer to it instead as an ARTS. Valve does the same.Boredpayne (talk) 19:44, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Staff info

I noticed that the sidebar gives the names of some of the Riot staff. However, given the large number of people working there it is very incomplete and arbitrary. It mentions some producers and artists most LoL players wouldn't know, while failing to mention the president of Riot, Marc "Tryndamere" Merrill, or the very important Live lead Morello. I'm sorry, but I have to give this article a quick fail. The lead is too short, the development is almost completly unreferenced, and most of the article is about the gameplay.

  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
Some sections should be written as prose and it does not follow the Manual of Style
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
No references in the "Development" section, recognised as "OR"
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
    Fix development, as stated above.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars etc.:
    Seems pretty good.
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
Other than the boxart, there is nothing. No image of the developers, maybe a screenshot...nothing.
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
As you can see, this article will need A LOT of work before it can pass. Good luck! --Khanassassin (talk) 09:30, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Things to do

  • The lead - The lead should contain a little of everything. The gameplay, story, development, release, reception...
  • Gameplay - The section should be a bit shortened, since most of the article is about the gameplay. I also spoted a "[citation needed]" in there.
  • Story - A section dedicated to the story, if the game has one.
  • Development and Distribution - The development section really needs lots of references, and a few could be added the Distribution section
  • Reception - The award table should probably be converted to prose

Who is Sean Compton? I have a bunch of friends on the LoL design team, and they've never heard of him. Why is he listed in the designers list?

Changing the Amount of Champions currently

reception

Given that the game has hit #1 in a lot of parts of the world, I have a few suggestions:

1) Should reception be updated, or does reception only cover critical reception? Is there a relevant way to do this that isn't an advertisement? I do think that this is a key part of the overall picture of LoL that isn't really covered in the present content. 2) Is this relevant to any other aspects of the content here besides reception?

Some examples: www.gametrics.com is one of the PCB tracking reports, and it often shows LoL as #1 in Korea. This is a big deal, since western games haven't done those kind of numbers since Starcraft. Another article: http://www.azubu.com/board_view/news/board_id/10000000001993/re_url/latest

I don't know the stats, but Garena announced that LoL was the #1 game in Taiwan by something like 2:1 over the #2 title in hours played. Anyone have a source? I recall seeing it in a press release or article though.

Xfire.com pretty much always shows LoL as the #1 game.

Riot announced their numbers in November: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/38654/League_of_Legends_Passes_325M_Registrations_115M_Monthly_Players.php Forbes talked about how this was higher numbers than WoW: http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/01/12/riots-league-of-legends-surpasses-world-of-warcraft-as-number-one-mmo/

They've also set a lot of records on number of eSports viewers, such as what was listed here: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1932875 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.55.187.43 (talk) 02:54, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Champion list

I think having a List of champions in League of Legends article should be discussed. They can first discuss their gameplay, and then their lore. Sources can be found from both Joystiq and IGN for most, although they are pretty much just gameplay commentary. Sure, none will likely get enough notability for a separate article, but it surprises me that there is not a list article. Which champion the player picks is a huge part of the game, and I would think that even non-players would like to read about the lore. Blake (Talk·Edits) 16:39, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That seems excessive and certainly closer to game guide material than not. --Izno (talk) 16:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose creating a list of champions for the same reason. And Blake - non-players will not want to read about the lore. Some guy (talk) 17:37, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, sorry. At least I tried. heh. Blake (Talk·Edits) 20:33, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

proposed changes

Hello! I am new to wiki, but would like to help out with this page. I am an experienced player. Below are some changes that might be considered:

1) "The game was in a closed beta from April 10, 2009, to October 22, 2009.[5] It then transitioned to open beta until release.[6]" in the first paragraph is now old news. Perhaps it could be archived?

2) General section- requires a generic picture of league of legends gameplay, as it stands, does not capture idea of gameplay

3) Game modes and matchmaking should mention that Normal and Ranked games are the most commonly played modes and are viewed as "Standard" modes. As it stands, it implies that players play all modes equally, which is incorrect

3b) "The player is placed on the ladder according to their rating, and top teams on the ladder have a chance to compete in the "$100,000 Global Finals" at the end of the season." is out of date, as it is currently season 2, with a different prize pool Also, the ranked solo-queue ladder is not directly linked to the competitive circuit, and teams are given points based on performances in recognized tournaments on respective circuits. for all the above, an official announcement sourced from website is found here: na.leagueoflegends.com/news/season-2-championship-october-13-los-angeles

4) Fields of justice needs to make clear that the 5v5 map Summoner's Rift is the most widely played. As it is, it implies that all 3 maps are equally played, which is inaccurate.

5) Persistence and meta section -> Summoner -> needs to mention level 30 cap, and wording for summoner spells is unclear in "The Summoner can also choose two summoner spells." as it is unclear whether these two summoner spells are customizable within games or if they are persistently fixed

6) Reception More up-to-date reviews should be sourced, the ones being referenced currently reflect the game as it was pre-release.

Additional stuff: Other servers and differences between servers notable (for instance, SEA has no tribunal, differences in player pool size, interesting snippets about different server players as of now can also be sourced reasonably easily) Under the competitive section, LoL's success in regions such as Korea is also verifiable and of note, and should probably be mentioned

I'd be glad to help out with this page if I can get access!

South East Asian servers and other major changes.

Since it's semi-protected, can't do anything bout it. Here's the link and if possible, someone do please add that in. Thanks. http://lol.garena.com

Also spectator mode, which was introduced recently to allow games to be spectated by other players that are not involved in the said game.

Note: There is also:
- Philippine Server (Does not have Dominion game mode)
- Taiwan Server (Chinese based server. Does not have spectator mode, but this is to be confirmed)
- South East Asian main server. (Does not have spectator mode)

The above said servers are all hosted by Garena.

If any questions, do feel free to look for me at here.

GameZebo review

Could someone delete the part about the GameZebo review in the reception section? In my opinion, the line "GameZebo, in contrast, awarded the game 2.5 stars out of 5, criticizing the game's lack of campaign mode and single player options, and stating that "League of Legends feels like a real time strategy game with all of the strategy taken out.", shows a complete lack of understanding of the most basic principles of Action-RTS / MOBA games. While this may be true it is a unnecessary conclusion since it has nothing to do with the game as it is, but with the whole genre of games. It is like complaining, that Pac-Man doesn't have a multiplayer. Also the discrepancy between this review and the majority of other reviews as well as the user rating on their site makes me feel, that the author of the article simply did not grasp the concept of the game and therefore this review is not good enough and should not be mentioned here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.146.55.198 (talk) 15:19, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We can't remove reviews from articles because we disagree with them. Some guy (talk) 15:44, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, not every review should be included, because it may not fulfill certain requirements concerning quality. I'm not too familiar with the Wikipedia guidelines (shame on me), but I feel like this review is really not worth mentioning, especially as it basically contradicts almost every other big review. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.146.42.52 (talk) 09:29, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Articles frequently cite the "contradicts almost every other big review" to show opposing viewpoints. Generally a reviewer's validity for inclusion in an article is chosen on an organization-by-organization basis, maybe pruned more down to author in some cases. So you can throw out a review written by some nobody on his blog, but a review from IGN is probably always notable, even if you disagree with it. I don't know the consensus on GameZebo here, but since they have an article they must be at least somewhat notable. The reasoning you are using for your desire to throw out the review is completely subjective, boils down almost entirely to "I disagree", and isn't strong enough on its own. If you can find precedent that GameZebo articles don't meet standards of quality required here or the review wasn't written by a staff member or something more concrete, you'd have stronger footing. I'm about to go to bed, but I'll give the review a better look in the next day or two. Some guy (talk) 11:21, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am not quite sure whether or not this is temporary, but to me it seems like GameZebo removed their review on their webpage. Not to sound arrogant, but I think they revised it, because to someone who is decently familiar with the game and its concepts, it just made very little sense (This is hard to explain to a neutral platform like WP). Is there still a reason to keep the line in the article or could someone take it out? 84.146.78.95 (talk) 20:59, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Extermal link dispute

I hope all participants could stop reverting as per no daily 1RR policy, otherwise I would request full protection of the article. Having said that I do approve Gerena's links as they're official vendor of the game in non-American/European regions. No instruction stated in WP:External link rules out the inclusion of vendor's links as long as they are not a long list as per Links to be considered#3. This is a case-by-case situation and Gerena's links are largely acceptable. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 03:02, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Success of the game not really displayed

Hello everyone,

I sometimes try to explain to friends / colleagues how successful the game is, probably being the most popular computer game of today, but the wikipedia entry about the game doesn't really display that. While it gives some numbers in the Reception area, they are hard to relate to as someone who doesn't necessarily play games and knows what those numbers mean... Is a million players a day a lot compared to other games? Is it little? Are there many games that have more than that? etc.

There are many articles and interviews by big tv channels and magazines that discuss the success, wouldn't it make sense to somehow incorporate that, to give the person who doesn't know the game and just wants to know how successful it is an idea?

There's a problem with the stats that are being relayed here as mentioned by the comments sections of the pages, specifically the claims that Xfire as the main source of information is disputable. Xfire tends to only cover a certain portion of the world and therefore is not completely accurate. It is also incapable of counting hours on games run through the Steam platform. ☆ Antoshi ☆ T | C 04:29, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Garena LoL

Okay, so I want to hear, why do people keep removing the Garena sites? I thought we settled this thing months ago, Garena LoL is only accessible in SEA. Liu Tao (talk) 01:37, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you need to write a complete sentence or two, wikilinking to Garena and explaining the situation, rather than just adding something to "External Links". --Nczempin (talk) 11:49, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by wikilinking? I already paranthesis the links saying they're Philipine and Singapore LoL websites. Liu Tao (talk) 06:07, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
