Songs against religions/Gods

Music and religion go way back. Zillions of songs praising/loving some God. What about the other way - e.g. a song that says "no thanks" or even "fuck you" to all that? One good example is Jesus (don't) want me for a sunbeam, covered by Nirvana here [1]. Another is Lordy Lordy by The Distillers, here [2]. A perhaps debatable illustrative candidate is Plastic Jesus, covered by The Flaming Lips here [3].

So: any further references/examples of songs that are fairly explicitly anti-god or anti-religion? I'm fine with broad interpretations here, can be any God, any religion, any language or time period. Thanks! SemanticMantis (talk) 16:03, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

a problem, of course, is that actually addressing God in a song suggests the person believes in God...so it's highly unlikely they'd dare insult God etc..so there's going to be far, far, far less songs in this vain...and aiming songs at a particular religion on the other hand would just seem sort of odd for the most part..like a song titled "Screw the Lutheran Church."68.48.241.158 (talk) 16:45, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Imagine by John Lennon. The relevant lyrics:

While it doesn't mention God specifically, Big Rock Candy Mountain presents a "bum's paradise" version of heaven, complete with a whiskey lake and cigarette tree, which does seem to rather mock religion. StuRat (talk) 17:52, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Taking of Pelham 123 (2009 movie)

When Camonetti spoke to Ryder for the 1st time, the [Audience including Us] knew that Ryder [seriously specifically threatened] to kill the Motorman if Garber did not return.

1. Why didn't Camonetti call for Garber immediately?

2. Don't anyone Try to Tell me that Camonetti is Innocent, so Isn't it True that Camonetti is Stupid for Unintentionally causing the Motorman to Die?(67.187.181.37 (talk) 18:18, 6 May 2016 (UTC)).[reply]

Are you asking us to speculate on the motives of fictional characters? Unfortunately, the only possible answer is "because that's the way they wrote it". That's what fiction is. --Jayron32 19:00, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think the questioner is unsure whether (a) the apparent gap is an actual plot hole or (b) there is some valid explanation mentioned or hinted at in the script which the questioner didn't notice or (c) there was some valid explanation in the source novel / 1974 movie / 1998 movie / draft cut of the 2009 movie that didn't make the final released version. I haven't seen the movie, but on the face of it, Jayron32's snide response "that's the way they wrote it" may well be wrong. jnestorius(talk) 09:26, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Life of Jesus - Bible/Film Differences

Which one of six films about the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ featured all events of the Bible? King of Kings, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus (1979), The Visual Bible: Matthew, The Gospel of John or Son of God.

Events include: • Jesus’s mother impregnated by God. • Star of Bethlehem. • The Last Supper. • Judas kissing Jesus. • Jesus saying ‘Judas, you betray me with a kiss?’ • Judas committing suicide by hanging. • Caiaphas asking Jesus if he is the Son of God and Jesus says ‘I am.’ • Caiaphas tearing his robe in anger and accusing Jesus of blasphemy. • Jesus being beaten or tortured. • Jesus wearing the Crown of thorns. • Jesus seeing his mother while carrying the cross. • A woman wiping Jesus’ face. • Jesus getting tired of carrying the cross and falling down a few times. • Two convicts talking to Jesus while crucified. • The resurrected Jesus telling his friends that he is with them always. Even until the end of the world or time. • Jesus ascended into Heaven. 86.169.72.176 (talk) 18:51, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still expecting us to watch the movies for you and report on this? You know of the existence of all of these movies. You know of the existence of the Bible. You have the capability to watch all of these movies and/or read plot synopses from Wikipedia articles and/or IMDB articles. There is literally nothing anyone here can do for you. Just watch the movies or read about them yourself, and compare them to the Bible yourself. You're allowed to think for yourself and reach your own conclusions. --Jayron32 18:59, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Radio adaptation of war of the worlds causing public panic

Did the radio adaptation of War of the Worlds actually cause a public panic? According to subsection intelligent 'martians' of subsection 'In Culture' of the article on Mars, there was a public panic caused by the radio play. I remember one time hearing someone on the radio say that this is actually a myth.24.207.71.235 (talk) 00:29, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The War of the Worlds (radio drama) covers this extensively. I removed that sentence from Mars. -- BenRG (talk) 01:17, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly not a myth, but it has become somewhat exaggerated. Folks who missed the announcement(s) that it was just a play, were more likely to freak out. One example: The banner headline for the Asbury Park Evening News for Oct 31, 1938: "[Jersey] Shore Shares in Panic Caused by Radio Hoax." ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:35, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the article, especially The War of the Worlds (radio drama)#Extent and The War of the Worlds (radio drama)#Newspaper coverage and response, before citing contemporary newspapers as evidence. -- BenRG (talk) 05:11, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the perception of the extent of the panic is now considered to be exaggerated. There is an account on page 2 of Welles essentially apologizing for causing "some apprehension" due to "a misunderstanding." It doesn't read like he thinks there was truly mass hysteria. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:25, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone who is interested the PBS documentary covers the event from a number of angles. The info that many people had tuned - there was channel surfing for radio :-) - to the drama after it had started since they had been listening to another program was fun to learn. MarnetteD|Talk 18:35, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That was a major issue, and as I recall from that show (or elsewhere) there was a suspicion that the show's producers were counting on people turning in late - although there were other announcements during the show. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:07, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As explained in The War of the Worlds (radio drama)#Causes, there was never any evidence that people switched en masse from The Chase and Sanborn Hour to War of the Worlds. "Many Americans assumed" it at the time, and it became part of the mythology of the broadcast, and it's still repeated by reporters who think their story is about other people's gullibility when it's actually about their own. -- BenRG (talk) 20:54, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

At a certain point in the series, his eyebrows change shape. Does anybody know why? Was it easier to draw or express emotions with the new style brows? Finally the boy was traveled, and realize his desires. At the end of the film the writer said, never met the girl.

Which Mozart song is this?

I was at a gymnastics performance, and one of the background musics started out as a classical piano music (apparently by Mozart), but then changed into a pop/rock and classical music hybrid, with drums and spoken vocals over the classical piano music. The vocals told Mozart's life story, when he was born, when he composed his first symphony, and when he died. The chorus went "Amadeus, Amadeus". Does anyone have any idea which song this is? JIP | Talk 20:58, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like Rock Me Amadeus --LarryMac | Talk 21:10, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's definitely not it. After having looked at the lyrics, they were nothing of the sort. The song I heard had lyrics such as "Year xxxx, Mozart composes his first symphony" and "The next year, Mozart dies". (I don't remember the exact years.) "Rock Me Amadeus" is completely different. JIP | Talk 21:20, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The voiceovers match, the rest of the song doesn't. The song I heard was completely instrumental apart from the voiceovers. None of the German lyrics on the lyrics site linked to from Rock Me Amadeus appear on the song I heard. JIP | Talk 20:37, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Country song

Snoop Dogg (although this may be more of a kilt), Young Thug, Kanye West, Pitbull, and P-Diddy, ASAP Rocky, Cee-Lo (although Cee-Lo is more of a singer than a rapper). This article discusses the recent trend of males wearing clothing traditionally tagged for women, and also specifically cites Kanye and Young Thug. This article specifically names 11 rappers known to wear dresses or skirts in public. --Jayron32 16:24, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32: Awesome, thank you, there were many more than I expected! Interesting stuff. I especially like this picture of Mos Def. Cee-Lo is a singer, but he raps too (albeit badly), for example here on the Wake Up Show, so I would consider him both a singer and a rapper. Some of them seem to be making fashion statements, but with others the only explanation why they wore a dress is because they simply wanted to. Doctor Who - Rose's frustration of the TARDIS translation circuit

In the Doctor Who episode The End of the World, why was Rose Tyler angry about the TARDIS translation circuit? When she says that the aliens speak English, the 9th Doctor explains that the TARDIS puts a telepathic field into her head and translates languages. However, she got furious and asks why he didn't ask? What did she mean? Ask what? I thought she'd be happy or pleased. Because it makes her understand what they're saying. Then she ask questions that he refused to answer, making him defensive and very angry. How very surprising. 86.169.72.176 (talk) 15:57, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Because the TARDIS changed her body without asking for her permission. Many people would feel that this would be an intrusion when they have not given explicit permission. Dismas|(talk) 16:50, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
[EC] One possible explanation is that this particular (fictional) character regarded direct manipulation of her brain/mind without warning or permission to be an intrusion into her privacy and/or physical integrity.
However, on a broader note, questions like this betray a misunderstanding about the nature of art. A piece of fiction (like this) is a work of art, which means it may not have a definite cut-and-dried explanation for everything: rather, it may present deliberately ambiguous or inconclusive ideas so that the viewer can, by contributing their own interpretations, in effect collaborate with the artists (the scriptwriters, etc.) to produce a unique piece of art that may be different from the one in any other viewers' heads. In short, art is not passive, the viewer (reader, listener, etc.) needs to do some work as well, so you, 86.169.72.176, should be deciding the answer to questions like this for yourself. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 185.74.232.130 (talk) 17:00, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt if this was the reason, but any translation should absolutely be identified as such, because all translations are subject to error. For example, if you said you just ate a burrito, and it was translated as "I just ate a baby burro", you could see why that might cause some anger. StuRat (talk) 17:22, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Marlee Matlin

Through which family members if she of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent? Parents? Grandparents? Great grandparents? 50.68.120.49 (talk) 04:51, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This article contains excerpts from her memoir I'll Scream Later. She says her paternal grandfather, Edward Matlin, was a Russian from "Gomel... in what is now Belarus"; and her maternal grandmother, Rose Hammer, was from Bledow (apparently either this one or this one), Poland. Both families were Jewish. As I read the article, her other grandparents were already living in the US when those two moved there. --69.159.61.172 (talk) 07:25, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
