Hi Cwmhiraeth, Thank you for your feedback on my recent edits to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_P._Lagon|Mark P. Lagon]]. I would like to clarify that I have absolutely no financial stake in the page. I am a former unpaid intern of Mark's and believe he is notable enough to be listed on Wikipedia. I admit that I am somewhat biased in his favor, but do not think my wording was overly-promotional or inappropriate. According to the [[Wikipedia:Conflict of Interesthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest|Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest]] page, "Beliefs and desires may lead to biased editing, but they do not constitute a COI. COI emerges from an editor's roles and relationships, and the tendency to bias that we assume exists when those roles and relationships conflict." I look forward to your thoughts.

I reported the PR firm Nudlavirkid to UAA and an administrator has blocked the user for now. I noticed you have unreviewed the article, so I have tidied the article a bit and would appreciate your opinion on it going forward. I am unsure myself, the subject is of national importance with national coverage—in a tiny nation of 49,000 people. How exactly to treat this is less than clear to me. — Frayæ (Talk/Spjall) 13:36, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Frayae: Thanks, I have re-reviewed it now; it is much improved under your guidance and I would have thought the under-referenced tag could be removed. I am unsure whether the subject is sufficiently notable but don't intend to do anything about it. I have the page on my watchlist in case it blossoms into flowery, promotional prose once again. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:54, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Likewise I will keep an eye on it, I have a distinct feeling that someone had the Farose Wikipedia article translated and was simply reverting back to that version. — Frayæ (Talk/Spjall) 14:01, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Accusations of lying

Hello, I'd like to give a chance to redress the balance with your accusations that one or more of us has been a liar. Please consider doing so. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:06, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@The Rambling Man: I have not accused you or anyone else of lying. No doubt the reasons behind your creating and operating your ERRORS page are complex. The explanation you give for working on articles in a queue, where only admins can action the points you raise, rather than in prep, where anyone can, is not credible as a sole reason for your actions. If I have offended you, I apologize, but please stop trying to draw me into a quarrel. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:29, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you...

...ignore WP policies, and add unsourced material to articles, including to their ledes? I respect your great dedication, your passion for biology, and your facility with language, but this cannot elevate to encyclopedic articles that demand we trust undeclared editors, for their personal expertise—which is what we do when we do not draw materials from stated sources. The WP way is not "just trust us," but rather, "here is the source of the erudition that is presented." 2601:246:CA80:3CB5:4CE9:701A:E5B8:D10C (talk) 04:10, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • parsnip, 2013 edits through May. As a person in leadership, here, @Drmies:, you can do a broader search of content to see if the pattern is as broad and deep as this example suggests. And you can easily deal, @Drmies:, with the way that the status of the lede defies GA status, and with the issue that naive readers are offered this content without warning that it is questionable, per WP:WHYCITE. Cheers, and thank you both in general, and here, in advance, for your WP efforts. 2601:246:CA80:3CB5:4CE9:701A:E5B8:D10C (talk) 04:55, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: I don't believe I have come across this editor before. As far as I can see they have taken an example from 2013, which I have not examined, and followed up with the generalisation that I "add unsourced material to articles". Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:14, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
IP, I am troubled by what appears to be a generalization of criticism based on one or two things, and this blanket indictment you utter. It is entirely possible that articles, GAs or DYKs, still have loose ends, but personalizing the matter is less likely to lead to quick article improvement. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 16:05, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Cwmhiraeth,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Cwmhiraeth. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm waiting to see what happens next. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether the edits are wrong, but they are all unexplained. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:48, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And a new IP address (42.101.65.132) is continuing these types of unexplained edits. After a bit of research into Opisthokont, I suspect that these changes are all valid but it is harder to tell without a source provided. Loopy30 (talk) 15:22, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania State Game Lands Number 166

Greetings, Cwmhiraeth. I see the tag you placed on the article page. All the information there came from the three sources cited. What seems to be uncited in the article? Or is it that I should include cites in more places in the article to show the sources? I've been writing articles for rivers of bucks county and place names, I discovered only a couple out of over 300 Game Lands had articles and decided to try to add all the rest. What ever I need to do to improve the cites of this article, I'll need to do for the others I've put up. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,Are1718 (talk) 03:58, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Are1718: Ideally, there should be at the very minimum, a citation at the end of each paragraph. This is deemed to apply to the whole paragraph unless there are other citations earlier in the paragraph. If the information comes from a map, then cite the map, so that readers know where the information came from. The 300 or so Game Lands articles are going to keep you quite busy! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:13, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It sure will. Thanks for the info, easy fixes, i'll go back and clean them up.Are1718 (talk) 12:50, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A number of my edits to Detroit Board of Police Commissioners were reverted due to copyright violations. This was back on February 24. I can't go back to see what was reverted because those edits have been redacted. Could you tell me what caused the problem so I don't repeat this mistake. I attempt to adhere to all copyright laws.--Truthtests (talk) 21:15, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Truthtests: Only an administrator can look at the redacted text so I can't help there. However, if you click the "History" tab for the article you can see the url of the site from which a large hunk of text had been copied in the edit summary. My best advice is to use your own words and phraseology. In fact, read the source carefully and then write your text from memory, checking afterwards to see if you have missed anything important. NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Cwmhiraeth,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Can't we find a picture slot for this one? The image is quite striking. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:49, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The image is quite interesting, but the article was about the surgeon not the device, and other competing images were available. Yesterday, when researching the circulatory system of the squid (which has three hearts), I came across a remark that the mammalian heart was really two hearts, which happened to be fused together. An interesting concept, I thought! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:48, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. The hook is about what he did however and the image is the lead pic for the linked article. I don't think it is a stretch at all to use that pic, particularly as we have no picture of Copeland himself. Not sure whether the Jarvik and Syncardia are the same thing however. If we could use it, it would get tons of views, though possibly as much on the heart article. @Whispyhistory: Philafrenzy (talk) 01:45, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The image would only fit with ALT1. He implanted the jarvik-7, an early version of the Syncardia. It was to buy time until a heart was found for transplant. The "mammalian heart was really two hearts, which happened to be fused together" is interesting. Whispyhistory (talk) 06:19, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hi, I was just curious about this edit you posted to a new user's talk page. Your signature was in the middle of the post, instead of the end. Was this a template? Anyway, I just thought I'd make you aware of it, so that you make any adjustments, if necessary. Cheers - wolf 12:20, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That was 8 months ago and I think it's just an anomaly using the page curation tool. I may have included my signature in the little info box, which I don't do now. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:39, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I just wanted to see if it was perhaps a problem with template you were using (and imagine there was a problem that had been going on for 8 months!... better late than never to find out about it and fix it) But if there is no problem now, then we can put this issue to rest. Thanks for the prompt reply. - wolf 15:26, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup

I believe its fixed, I made a couple of adjustments to the 10 template and it works - it was not going from 9 to 10 but a couple of spacing and formatting issues. Primarily that some were set as {{u|name}} instead of as user name, I fixed that, removed anything formatting wise that did not match "9" and it works. Let me know if you run into any other issues and I'll be happy to help. MPJ-DK (talk) 15:39, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • And as part of my debugging efforts I did create the submission page for myself just to see if that made a difference, hope that's not a problem. GLad I was around since this is actually something I do for a living - finding or researching software problems so I am more than happy to help if you run into other issues, even non-Cup related. MPJ-DK (talk) 15:46, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MPJ-DK: Thank you. It looks OK now, and it's good that you found a rational explanation because it was mystifying me. I will prepare the submissions pages before making the main page live this evening. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 15:49, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A page you started (Gibson Dokyi Ampaw) has been reviewed!

@Cwmhiraeth: hello Cwmhiraeth, thank you for reviewing Gibson Dokyi Ampaw. Concerning the date of death, all efforts to find information about the exact date of his death have proven futile. This article: <ref>"Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page). however seems to suggest that he died in the early 2000s. Can I use the "early 2000s" for the date of death for the mean time until the exact date is found? Thank you. Kinvidia (talk) 02:02, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If there are no reliable sources it may be best to omit the information. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:40, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Questions about the WikiCup

Hi Cwmhiraeth, I have a few doubts and I'm hoping to clear them up. I've signed up for the WikiCup 2019. Once my page is created, do I add my submissions after they've taken effect? Say I've worked on a DYK, do I list it there after it appears on the main page, or after it has been promoted? Also, despite having nearly 30 DYKs in my kitty and having done it for 6 years I have a quick doubt about QPQs. Does a review where I've not given the green tick due to some shortfalls such as an unsourced statement or that the article has not been expanded enough, does it still count under QPQ? I've always assumed that it had to be passed. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 23:28, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Rsrikanth05: Indeed, add your DYKs to your submissions page after they have reached the main page and you have received a notification on your talk page. As for QPQs, that's just a part of nominating your own article at DYK. You do not need to pass the nomination for the QPQ to qualify, but if you find some problems and all the DYK requirements are not met at first, you should follow them up later. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:40, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Thanks a lot. :) --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:46, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Did you know nominations/PSLV-C42

Hi Cwmhiraeth,

Thank you for taking the time to promote this nomination. But I hope you know that I had included an image with the hook. So is there any particular reason why you promoted it without the image? MBlaze Lightning 16:38, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@MBlaze Lightning: Basically, each set of eight hooks goes forward with a single image hook, but among nominations, many more than one in eight has an image. In selecting which images to use, some are essential to the hook and others are peripheral. In this instance, I took a view that one rocket looks much like another to the uninitiated, and I needed a non-biographical hook to slot in between two biographies. I am sorry to disappoint you. Alleged financial stake in Mark P. Lagon

Hi Cwmhiraeth, Thank you for your feedback on my recent edits to [P. Lagon]. I would like to clarify that I have absolutely no financial stake in the page. I am a former unpaid intern of Mark's and believe he is notable enough to be listed on Wikipedia. I admit that I am somewhat biased in his favor, but do not think my wording was overly-promotional or inappropriate. According to the [of Interest] page, "Beliefs and desires may lead to biased editing, but they do not constitute a COI. COI emerges from an editor's roles and relationships, and the tendency to bias that we assume exists when those roles and relationships conflict." I look forward to your thoughts.
