"I come from an environment where, if you see a snake, you kill it. At GM, if you see a snake, the first thing you do is go hire a consultant on snakes. Then you get a committee on snakes, and then you discuss it for a couple of years. The most likely course of action is -- nothing. You figure, the snake hasn't bitten anybody yet, so you just let him crawl around on the factory floor. We need to build an environment where the first guy who sees the snake kills it." ~Ross Perot
"I'm sorry, but you two appear to be: treating each other civilly accepting the possibility that your own actions might not have been correct trying to work out the best thing to do for the project without concern for you[r] own egos. I don't know where you people think you are, but you definitely don't understand how WP:AN is supposed to work. Where's the disrespect? The attacking of each other's characters and motives? The entertaining temper tantrums? Please immediately review other threads on this noticeboard, so you can better participate in WP:AN. Right now you look like rookies. I don't do AFD, so I have no opinion on whether to relist or not (couldn't hurt, tho, right?), but that's a good example of what should be going on here; useless babble without any helpful outcome. --barneca (talk) 9:57 pm, 16 September 2008, Tuesday (10 years, 8 months, 12 days ago) (UTC−5)[1]
To say it in WikiVoice, or not?? While this list of sources is really good and does establish "commonly used by reliable sources" I think we should additionally ask ourselves - what added benefit is there to Wikipedia saying it "in our own voice" as against simply reporting in a neutral manner that it is common for his comments to be described as racist.
As of this moment, we are engaging in what I think is admirable short-term restraint. We say in the lede "He has a history of making controversial [weasel words] comments." That's fine as far as it goes, because 'controversial comments' is true, and is neither positive nor negative as an evaluation. Sometimes controversial comments are good, sometimes they are bad. Fine. But we are at the same time here being too cautious, I think, in that we fail to inform the reader as to why the comments are controversial. Is he saying things that might be controversial in Iowa like "Gay marriage should be legal" or "Marijuana prohibition has done more harm than good"? No, actually. So I think we should cautiously say something like "He has a history of making comments that have commonly been referred to as racist.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]" Well, maybe 9 footnotes is excessive, but you see my point. We have more than enough to make the point that the reader needs to know, and I think the point is stronger than if we simply say, in our own voice, that he has a history of making racist comments. --Jimbo Wales (talk) 9:57 am, 19 June 2018, Tuesday (19 days ago) (UTC−5)
To include it in a BLP, or not?? BLPs wherein a subject's work, beliefs or ideologies are perhaps more controversial than the actual subject, should not become focused on bolstering and subsequently refuting the subject's views or theories rather than actually defining the subject. In many cases this may in fact be due to the subject trying to push their own ideas, while others work diligently to refute them, but many such cases involve editors who have no affiliation with the subject other than a personal belief/disbelief in their work. A person's biography is not a good place to debate scientific theory or ideological beliefs; such debates belong in the articles that focus on those topics. For BLPs, it is enough to simply state what their views are and link to the articles which expand on those views.
(quote by Zaereth edited for brevity; Jimbo Wales agreed with Zaereth’s explanation.)
Politics, presidents and NPOV I'd like to add that I don't mind a little bit of personal chit-chat here about politics, I'd like to always seek to tie it back to Wikipedia. We have chosen a very tough job: NPOV. Dislike for the President, fear about things that are happening in the world, may make it emotionally harder to remain neutral, but remain neutral we must. I happen to personally think that given the decline in quality of the media across the board (there are still fantastic journalists out there, but overall the landscape isn't great) the best way for us to help the world heal is neutrality.--[2] Jimbo Wales (talk)] 3:12 pm, 8 January 2019, Tuesday (UTC−6)
Writing for the opponent "Writing for the opponent is an important trait of good editors. They must be able to divorce themselves from their own POV so much that they can bend over backwards to aid in the writing of content which documents views they do not like. They must never block the inclusion of content which opposes their own POV or political positions. If they cannot do this, they should recuse themselves from the topic and edit in other areas. Editors who are unwilling or unable to write for the opponent are incapable of truly understanding or abiding by the NPOV policy. As such they will always cause problems." (see WP:NPOV means neutral editors, not neutral content)

Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project) |
User:Adityavagarwal submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- It is my immense pleasure to nominate Atsme, a highly prolific veteran editor and one of the best contributors to Wikipedia. She is an editor who totally deserves this award and, in fact, it was very astounding that she has not received it yet. She has created 43 articles and provided 84 Images to enhance WikiPedia. She is a proud member of the WP Response Team, the Guild of Copy Editors and Wikipedia:WikiProject Horse racing. There are countless reasons to nominate her, but the best reason would be: "Writing or significantly expanding articles on a regular basis". A visit to her talk page is filled with humor and enjoyably fun. She has immensely contributed to a wide array of animal species in addition to other articles on monuments (American paddlefish, Faisalabad, bowfin, loham, and the Taj Mahal as well as several others). I would therefore strongly advocate that she be adorned with this award!

- Ahhh...caviar!! Back when I did the field production for "The Paddlefish: An American Treasure" (FF to about 5:04), I worked closely with Missouri Dept. of Conservation biologists, a few game wardens, and 2 USF&WS special agents who had worked undercover in a sting operation to bust a ring of poachers who were illegally using gill nets to catch paddlefish in the Missouri River (they received prison sentences). Paddlefish roe closely resembles the roe of sevruga sturgeon, 2nd only to beluga which sells for about $129/oz. They helped me reenact the bust, and also helped setup the scene to demonstrate how poachers made caviar in a garage or wherever, and then sold the tins fraudulently labeled "Sevruga caviar" into the black market. For the sake of brevity, I'll summarize by saying that after what I witnessed firsthand while shooting the caviar segment, I will never eat caviar again. On a slightly different topic, Virginia Tech contacted me to co-produce an educational outreach program with them about crayfish, "America's Crayfish: Crawling In Troubled Waters". During field production, I survived the smell of the raw sorting/processing segment without issue, but I will never, never eat crayfish tails, sliced, diced or in-tact. The tails do not taste like lobster tails - but that isn't the worst part - whenever I see boiled crawfish, I get flashbacks - not of the vividly colored, beautifully arranged dishes steaming with the savory smells of sweet corn and spicey Cajun food - no, all I can remember is my New Orleans born production assistant sucking the juice out of the heads of boiled crawfish. 🤢🤮 Bon appétit!!! DYK for Sturgeon
On 18 May 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sturgeon, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that sturgeons are ancient fishes, widely sought after for caviar and more critically endangered than any other group of animal species? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sturgeon. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Sturgeon), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. AQHA Hall of Fame links
Hi Atsme, I hope you're well. I just finished fixing all the broken links caused by the AQHA website redesign. Let me know if I changed anything you would not prefer, and I'll change it back. For example, I just recalled you like to use the Houston, TX type wikilinks instead of Houston, Texas links which I changed on Matlock Rose. I also changed some of the NCHA Hall of Fame links to be more specific as to Rider or Horse, etc. On another note, I've completed the phase of going through the bronc riding book and am going to start a new phase with a new sandbox where I'll be ready for you to be involved...on your own schedule of course. Like you said, that's what is nice about Wiki, no deadline. But as for me, I plan to focus on the bucking horse this week. More later. dawnleelynn(talk) 22:23, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

WP:CEN is now open!
To all interested parties: Now that it has a proper shortcut, the current events noticeboard has now officially opened for discussion!
WP:CEN came about as an idea I explored through a request for comment that closed last March. Recen research has re-opened the debate on Wikipedia's role in a changing faster-paced internet. Questions of WP:NOTNEWS and WP:Recentism are still floating around. That being said, there are still plenty of articles to write and hopefully this noticeboard can positively contribute to that critical process.
Thank you for your participation in the RFC, and I hope to see you at WP:CEN soon! –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 17:09, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, MJL - hope it works out. What I'd really like to see is removal of loopholes and ambiguity in some of our current PAGs, and maybe modify our noticeboards a bit to give them more teeth in upholding policy, such as making comments by uninvolved editors carry the most weight. Another consideration is to elect a team of 5 moderators which may also prove beneficial. It will take some of the pressure off our AE admins who are often forced to act unilaterally to end disruption. I'm of the mind the proposed tweaks and modifications may also help eliminate the rare incidents of admin bias, inadvertent or otherwise, when determining which editor is causing the disruption. It all boils down to one's perspective and ideology, which is why clarity of NPOV is essential - it is a core content policy that should unquestionably take priority in our debates.
- While we're encouraged to use biased sources, they shouldn't be used improperly by biased editors who tend to defend their choices as being unbiased. In the dog world, when an owner can't see confirmational faults in their dog, it's called kennel-blind. Per WP:RECENTISM: ...articles should be written from a neutral point of view without editorial bias or article imbalance. There are instances when that isn't happening, and the probable cause is linked to editors either misinterpretating PAGs or purposely attempting to whitewash or create coatracks; the latter of which is supported in numerous dicussions at NPOV/N and BLP/N. We are all aware that social justice/POV warriors are here to promote their agenda, not to build an encyclopedia, and it should be dealt with expeditiously by neutral admins, especially when there's a preponderance of evidence that validates concern. Our job is to get the article right by presenting the material neutrally, dispassionately and accurately, which leaves no room for biased editing. j/s Atsme Talk 📧 13:50, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
- [Thank you for the ping] You should totally put that out there at the noticeboard! This certainly is something that needs wider comment on (at least more than me). Also, I'm not old enough for your talk page according to your editnotice. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 15:42, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
- Oh my - then don't read any of the posts. I think it's only an 18+ rating now. Does that make it "unadulterated"? Atsme Talk 📧 20:00, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Congratulations!
One of your amazing images is on the main page. I wasn't sure whether you knew that or not so I am stopping by to tell you that you may want to take a look. It is spectacular. I am going to give myself a treat and look for more of your photos to admire today. You deserve all the things that come with being such a great wikimedian. To my trusty ( Buttinsky)s
The voting for 2019 Geology Photo challenge has begun. If you're interested in seeing some pretty cool geological landscapes, rock formations, and the like - wander over there and cast your vote for 3 images. Their voting setup is a bit different from the way we voted for Picture of the Year, but if I can figure it out, I know you can. Happy voting!!! Atsme Talk 📧 22:20, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

- Hi, Porygon-Z474 - that's strange - usually AfC auto posts the info template on your TP - not sure what happened, so I'll post it manually. Sorry about that. Atsme Talk 📧 21:27, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Self-awareness DS Alerts
Awilley, JFG - it looks like ArbCom is going to approve my proposal or their modified version of it. The suggestion made by Fæ makes perfect sense, as JFG acknowledged. Question - when modifying the template that pops up when an editor attempts to add an alert, what is the best way to connect a customized DS Alert Notice at the top of a UTP? I am acknowledging that I am permanently aware of ALL DS per WP:Arbitration enforcement log (basically opting out of receiving further DS Alerts and taking full responsibility if I screw-up)? Also, please see the discussion I had with User_talk:GorillaWarfare#Request. Thank you all for your participation. Atsme Talk 📧 14:06, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Staffordshire Bull Terrier you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of FunkMonk -- FunkMonk (talk) 01:40, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

To be clear I am very supportive of everything you have done to the article and apologise if you feel my last minute suggestions are derailing the GA review. I am also sorry that I have not beeen able to provide more support throughout the process, the recent arrival of a child has somewhat curtailed my wiki activities. Translate or decode?
The word "projjer" - I've seen it twice, but I'm thinking it may be the fault of OCR when the doc was scanned.
- The fish culturist today is a man of science, with a projjer amount of practical experience,....
- then been installed as that which is to be considered the projjer one for the breed.
I thought "proper" but if the program wasn't picking up "p" then the words might have been spelled jrojjer, or maybe not. Your thoughts watchers, Tryptofish, Megalibrarygirl? Atsme Talk 📧 15:50, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- What a curious phenomenon. (more) I suppose the OCR decides that 'p' is more likely at the beginning of a word. (Though why it would assume that 'jj' is likely is a mystery to me.) Eman235/talk 18:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- Indeed... Atsme Talk 📧 18:21, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- I don't know, although it does look like some kind of error to me, rather than a real word. And in further mysteries, the wonderful wiki software never sent me the ping (but of course I watch here anyway). --Tryptofish (talk) 20:32, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
Your request at ARCA
As tempted as I am to phrase this as a DS alert, I'll refrain: Your request at ARCA has been archived and the resulting motion has been carried and enacted. Thanks for a very positive and constructive suggestion. GoldenRing (talk) 12:16, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
