Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    December 15

Where should I put a request for expert help on languages?

I added the following request to the talk pages of both the Origin of language and the Wikipedia:WikiProject Languages on December 10.

Grammar for "that slowed down the Prefrontal Synthesis (PFS) critical period"

I need some help from an expert. Under the The Romulus and Remus hypothesis section, it says:

    1. A genetic mutation that slowed down the Prefrontal Synthesis (PFS) critical period of at least two children that lived together

What is being slowed down? Is it "the Prefrontal Synthesis critical period" or is it "the Prefrontal Cortex critical period"? In the Critical period hypothesis article in WP, it says "Recently, it has been suggested that if a critical period [in language development] does exist, it may be due at least partially to the delayed development of the prefrontal cortex in human children." I can't find any reference to "slowing down" the Prefrontal Synthesis critical period or even what a PFS critical period is. It seems to me that the original author may have entered Synthesis when they meant to say Cortex.

Could someone explain what critical period applies to Prefrontal Synthesis and how it may be "slowed down"? Or maybe revise the indented sentence above, removing "slowed down" and substituting, say, "delayed the development of the Prefrontal Synthesis (or Cortex) critical period...". You might have to explain how the PFC affects the PFS. My guess is that the article is technically right but they just don't explain enough for us linguistic novices.

This question is also on the talk page of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Languages. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 20:39, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

So far, no reply. Do you have a better place to put this request? --RoyGoldsmith (talk)

The WP:Reference desks are much more active than most project discussion pages; try either /Science or /Language?  2606:A000:1126:28D:784A:E6BC:34C9:EC20 (talk) 00:12, 15 December 2019 (UTC) ... btw, I believe that cortex is assumed when prefrontal is stated; see: Prefrontal synthesis[reply]

    Live +30 day Nielsen ratings

Hi there, Nielsen is now releasing Live +30 day DVR ratings for TV shows. I often update the DVR ratings for The Conners and would like to begin adding the +30 18-49 and +30 total viewer ratings, but am unsure of how to name it on the table. For example, the Live+7 18-49 ratings are listed on Wiki pages as | dvr1 =XX, and Live_7 viewers are listed as | total1 =XX and the overall final rating with the +7 factored in as | totalv1 =XX, what would I title the +30 ratings as in order for them to show up correctly in the table?

Thanks, Matt — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sothisissociety (talkcontribs) 01:49, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Formula Student Team Article

We are a formula student team in Turkey. We desire an article on wikipedia about us like some other teams. I am working as a editor on some other webpage. Hello. Successfully writing a new Wikipedia article is the hardest task on Wikipedia. It is even harder when one is attempting to write about themselves or their own organization or group. You have what is called at conflict of interest in writing about your own group, and as such you should not write about it directly. There are indirect ways to do so, including Articles for Creation. However, you group would need to meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable organization as shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources in order to merit an article here. Not every organization merits an article here, even within the same field. 331dot (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Small caps within citation templates

The conventions in some areas of chemical naming involves small caps. For example, the naturally-occurring form of the sugar ribose is d-ribose, which I can write within text using the template form {{sm|d}}. However, this template is incompatible with citation templates. How do I render d-ribose correctly (such as from a journal article like doi:10.1016/S0065-2164(08)70462-3) without getting an error "templatestyles stripmarker in |title= at position 24 (help)" where the help link points to this advice that I can't figure out how to follow? I looked at the template and MOS documentation but it seems to be mostly about avoiding inappropriate use of small caps but not how to make them work in appropriate cases where the template doesn't work. Help, please.

    Thanks, EdChem (talk) 08:46, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Use the Unicode small caps version: ᴅ? See Small caps § Unicode from which you can copy/pasta all but small X. This:

    Juhayna (company)

I have add the resources in Juhayna (company) page so is there any editor can help me to remove this template?...--Ahmed Nader Khalifa (talk) 09:27, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid not, Ahmed Nader Khalifa: none of the sources there is independent of the company. The first two are clearly based on press releases from the company; the second is just a restating of its own financial reporting. Wikipedia is basically not interested in anything that the subject of an article says about itself. Every Wikipedia article should be based on places where people who have no connection whatever with the subject, and entirely unprompted by the subject, have chosen to publish some substantial writing about the subject. That is what the tag is requiring, and it will not be removed until a few such have been added. If there are no such sources, then the subject fails notability, and the article should be deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 11:41, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The whitespace only shows up in mobile view. The infobox width and table width in "administrative divisions" overlap, so the table doesn't display until after the end of the infobox. Schazjmd (talk) 17:13, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Desktop too depending on the screenwidth. If you narrow the browser window, there is a point with the table won't fit beside the infobox. MB 17:18, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Willbb234: Nope, I'm using my phone at the moment. I can't see a big space; do you mean a double-height empty line between the leading sentence and the table? It's absent in the source, possibly it results from the table formatting but I can't see how. :( --CiaPan (talk) 17:21, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I removed a column and that fixed the problem. If you think that the column should be put back in, go ahead, but bear in mind that the space will be back. Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 17:30, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have a "customer service" contact because we don't have "customers" in the usual sense. We have readers and editors, who can ask questions here. You can also contact Wikipedia via the contact linkage the bottom of this or any page. There is a list of a variety of other more specialized places to ask questions linked from the top of this page. Please respond here with a more specific question and we can try to answer it or direct you to a more appropriate location. -Arch dude (talk) 07:28, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, the volunteer editors of Wikipedia have little control over the fundraising banners; you will need to contact the Wikimedia Foundation with your feedback (which is quite a common complaint, and one I sympathise with; however, this is the trade-off for not running advertisements). – Teratix 09:27, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to publish a previously reviewed page

Hello at the Help Desk, My draft page has recently been reviewed. Am I now able to move it to the public space? And if so, what are the instructions to do that? Many thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wild Migration (talkcontribs) 05:41, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is this about Draft:Stormbird Press? That draft has not been reviewed. It has not even been submitted for review. If it were reviewed in its current state, it would certainly be rejected, as it cites no sources at all, and therefore fails to establish that its subject is notable. If you do move it to public space yourself, it's likely to be deleted, for the same reason. Maproom (talk) 09:25, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong.
In short, we have no control over this here, you have to contact Google. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 16:42, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@98.0.130.18: - OxonAlex is correct, but as a bit of additional advice outside the scope of Wikipedia, Google can be slow to respond to requests to fix incorrect info - you may have to submit the feedback form several times over a period of weeks before the info is corrected. One way, as explained in Help:User style, is to inherit your browser-defined style by putting html, body, #globalWrapper { font: inherit !important; } in your personal CSS file. Do this by clicking Special:MyPage/common.css, then click create, paste the previous code in line 1, preview and eventually publish. Wakari07 (talk) 02:06, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    • go to its Talk page and open a New Section,
    • list the exact additions, removals and/or changes of text etc. that you want done together with links to or citations of the Reliable sources that support each of these changes, and
    • wait for an enabled editor to consider them, check the sources and make the changes that they think appropriate.

If you are referring to donations to Wikipedia, you do not need to give your money if you don't wish to. You can avoid seeing donation requests by creating an account. 331dot (talk) 07:58, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Information change (Sky Angkor Airlines)

    To whom it may concern,

Hope all is well with you. By way of brief introduction, this is Jay from Sky Angkor Airlines. I am sending this message to request the information change for our company (attached the link for our comapny for your reference below).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Angkor_Airlines

Seeing the informtaion, name of Key people has to be changed from 김정은(CEO)to Mak Rady (CEO) since it is the important point of the company.

It would be appreciated if you could change the point above.

Best regards, Jay — Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.48.33.42 (talk) 08:21, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jay. Normally anybody can edit an article, but since you are affiliated with the subject it is best you do not. The thing to do is to leave a message on the talk page Talk:Sky Angkor Airlines specifying exactly what change you want made (just as you did here), and, preferably, including a citation to a published source for the information. If you attach the template {{edit request}} (just as you see it, with the double curly brackets) to your request, then it will put it on a list of requests needing attention and somebody will see it. --ColinFine (talk) 10:10, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It was vandalism, which I've reverted (a source is already cited there). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 11:13, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Blockquote formatting trouble

Hi, at Pragmaticism#Pragmatic_maxim, how can one reduce the spacing between the second quote and the subsequent heading Pragmatism's origin to "default"? (I guess the trouble arises from the fact that there are two </blockquote> tags used one right after another.)--Hildeoc (talk) 12:17, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

creating a profile and article about our company

    Hi,

I'd like to ask how we can write something about our company's profile.

We are a newspaper here in the UAE and we are in the list of the Wikipedia but we would like to give more information about us.

Do let me know how can it be done.

    Thanks,

You need to read about conflict of interest and about paid editing. Note also that Wikipedia accounts can't be shared; each individual needs his/her own account. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:24, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Move fair use image from commons to enwiki

Is there an easy way to move images uploaded to commons, that wouldn't be permitted there, but would be allowed as fair use here to be moved. I case was raised on Commons' help desk, about File:Al najma club crest.png - this is going to be deleted at commons, but was placed onto our article, and would probably be allowable under Template:Non-free use rationale logo here.

    Download from commons and re-upload to enwiki I guess? – Teratix 13:52, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There is a tool to go the other way (commons:Commons:Cross-wiki media upload tool), but I can't find a tool to go from Commons to Wikipedia, unfortunately. --ColinFine (talk) 14:14, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks, Teratix & ColinFine,
I'll reupload it here. I suppose there isn't really a problem with attribution, as it wasn't own work anyway.
    Thanks, ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:08, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm quite surprised there isn't a userscript that does this. I suppose most users would know when something was fair use or not after a few attempts, so wouldn't need such a thing. Shouldn't take too long to reupload. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:30, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Issue is the posting of FAKE and WRONG content with SELF-CREATED CONTENT

    Dear Team,

I want to get the content updated with authentic details of the Subject by taking and ensuring all the details being shared and provided by the subject. Please let me know whats the issue with your entire community for not updating and editing the correct details? Why is wikipedian so trusting its community people who are spreading fake news which are baseless the subject is here to answer all queries then why are your team is not able to identify? Like I am seriously concern if you guys can't judge the truth and remain on fake stuff then whats the use of wikipedia should shutdown this thing... simple. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iiamirti (talkcontribs) 18:15, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Iamirti Since you have no other edits besides the above, it is difficult to give you specific advice. However, please read verifiability, not truth. Wikipedia is not here to decide what is true and what is false, but to present what independent reliable sources say and allow the reader to decide for themselves.(certain other policies like WP:FRINGE and WP:UNDUE come into play as well) If you are here to be a truth fighter, you are liable to be disappointed. 331dot (talk) 18:18, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Bluntly: subjects lie. Actors lie about their age, politicians lie about their policies, organizations lie about their successes, religions lie about their history. We're all humans; it's what humans do. Our rules about self-published content and reliable sources are an effort however flawed, to filter out as many lies and unsourced assertions as possible, in favor of information which has been checked by third parties. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:48, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand your intended meaning with the subject is here to answer all queries, we don't know who you are. You (or I*) could be anyone. That's another reason Wikipedia must rely on published, reliable sources with professional fact-checkers and editors with reputations to protect. (*Actually, the WMF knows my identity, but that doesn't mean I am a reliable source.) —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:18, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, one of the options is a bank transfer. You may be able to call your bank and initiate the transfer by phone depending on your bank. RudolfRed (talk) 19:42, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your interest in supporting Wikipedia! I think they prefer email contact (donate@wikimedia.org), which might get you a phone number of someone to talk to, depending on the exact situation. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:20, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Statistics

Is there a statistic that shows the times of day Wikipedia is most often and least often vandalized? I would think that the afternoon hours is when Wikipedia is most often vandalized while the early morning hours would be the times Wikipedia is least often vandalized. Interstellarity (talk) 21:06, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My experience is that it is pretty much round-the-clock; it's always playtime somewhere for our global users. There are probably some stats that summarize contribs for things like ClueBot_NG. Unfortunately, xTools says it has too many contribs to process, but there might be other solutions, like downloading contrib lists and manually processing them, or maybe someone knows of another tool? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:31, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Interstellarity and AlanM1: There's the Wikipedia User Contribution tool. Didn't exactly have the patience of loading all their edits, but looking at the most recent 15,000 (which is a little less than a month's worth), there's lower activity on Saturdays, Sundays, and most days between about 04:00-13:59 UTC (and especially the 05:00-08:59 part), and higher activity the rest of the time, but especially Monday-Thursday in the 14:00-20:59 range. AddWittyNameHere 22:01, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    @AddWittyNameHere: That's clear to me. I was just checking. Interstellarity (talk) 22:30, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AddWittyNameHere: That's cool. Do you know of a report available for the edit filter somewhere? Here's a plot of the last 60 days' data:
    —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:35, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AlanM1: That's a pretty interesting visualization. As for the edit filter data, not from top of my head, no. It's possible some of the folks over at the WP:EFN know of some resource I'm not aware of or have an easier way to compile that data, though. AddWittyNameHere 01:58, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lanorrri1: Hello, the best way is probably via Commons. The upload wizard there will guide you throught he steps needed to upload, including licensing and then provide you with a link to use when adding to a Wikipedia article. Creating an Account...

I am attempting to create a new account and when it comes to the Username, the message "Username entered already in use. Please choose a different name." The username entered and already in use is my username. I never completed Creating my Account when I set out to create the account. Can my account be reset and/or deleted so I can go about creating it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C55:7900:F90:2D6F:4AE:5827:E5AA (talk) 06:23, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No. That message means that someone beat you creating that account. Please choose a different username. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:44, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi IP 2600:6C55:7900:F90:2D6F:4AE:5827:E5AA|2600:6C55:7900:F90:2D6F:4AE:5827:E5AA. If another account using the same username already exists, then you will have to choose another username since accounts (even unused ones, blocked ones, banned ones, etc.) are not deleted for the reasons given in Wikipedia:Usernames#Deleting and merging accounts. If, on the other hand, you are the user who created the account and simply forgot your password, you might be able to reset your password as explained here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:41, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Meaning of Orange Ribbon

Another meaning of the orange ribbon is that it represents Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, one form of Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. I have RSD & I saw it when the RSDA posted the orange ribbon to represent the burning associated with RSD, as well as other forms of Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. Thank you & have a great holiday & New Year! Fay — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:6000:1014:C037:69D4:C510:BB8D:8474 (talk) 10:43, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Hi IP 2604:6000:1014:C037:69D4:C510:BB8D:8474. Probably a better place to discuss such a thing would be at Talk:Orange ribbon, particularly you think it's something which should be considered as an addition to the article. The Help Desk is really intended to answer any general questions you may have about using Wikipedia, whereas the best place to discuss possible improvements to a Wikipedia article is on its corresponding talk page. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:33, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Updated tag removal

Hello all. Yesterday, the WikiProject Yorkshire Clean up page was updated with about 20 MP's with a tag at the bottom stating This article needs to be updated. Please update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. (December 2019). I have updated the relevant parts of the article, but I cannot find where the tag is to remove it. There is no obvious entry in the log to show when it was inserted, and from best that I can see, there is nothing on either the article or talk page that indicates some sort of parameter to amend so that the tag disappears.

It will be blinding obvious, but at the moment, I can't see it. Help please! Example Holly Lynch. Thanks and regards. The joy of all things (talk) 13:52, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The tag is actually at Template:Yorkshire and the Humber Labour Party MPs, transcluding to other articles that use it. theinstantmatrix (talk) 14:38, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Theinstantmatrix Thank you - see, I said it would be obvious; I never thought to look at the template. Thanks again. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 15:03, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
