Kizhakkambalam is an eastern suburb of the City of Kochi in Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. It is regarded as a model panchayath for its various development activities and is a part of Kunnathunad taluk of the Ernakulam district.[1][2]

Demographics

Kizhakkambalam has an overwhelmingly large Christian population[3] and the official language is Malayalam.[4]The area was originally a farming village, but now the majority works in service and industry. Many corporations, such as Anna, Kitex, Sevana, Blackcat, Wireropes, KG Packers have made a presence in the region resulting in approximately 40% of local workers being engaged in corporate-related work. 20% work in business, 10% in IT and tourism, 10% in traditional subsistence agriculture, 60% work public service jobs such as medicine and teaching. Kadamprayar ecotourism located near Pazhanganad and Manakkakadavu and the famous amusement park Wonderla Kochi is located just 3 km away from Kizhakkambalam. [5]Some believe that Kizhakkambalam's name came from kahzak (meaning a hanging tree for the death sentence) that was situated here during ancient times, and said that the name Kizhakkambalam came from the Kizhakkambalam Temple (Ambalam) which is located in the (Kizhak) east from Thrikkakara Temple.

According to the 2011 census of India, Kizhakkambalam has 5,551 households. The literacy rate of the village is 85.53%.[6]

Administration

Kizhakkambalam Panchayath is ruled by an organization called Twenty-20, which is sponsored by a commercial organization called Kitex. In the local governing body election held in November 2015, 17 out of 19 wards of the local Panchayath were won by Twenty-20. The aim of this organization is to make Kizhakkambalam a role model village by the year 2020. They have built many roads and drinking water projects inside the village. The organization also led an anti-alcohol campaign in the village. [7] A discounted food security shop, and other development and welfare activities have also made an impact. [8]

Criticism of the corporate takeover

Some intellectuals, like former Parliament Member Sebastian Paul, are worried that the take over of the local body by a corporate group can lead to an arguable type of politics. Governing companies can easily manipulate local bodies to serve their interests. Environmental activists like C.R. Neelakantan pointed out that the Kitex group started political activism after they were caught red-handed in pollution issues. There are many allegations against the Kitex company among the residents of Kizhakkambalam. The pollution made by the company led to many large-scale protests. Previous panchayath administrations withdrew the license of the company but the Kitex made a political party and participated in elections.[9]
