Hello, Onganymede. You can contribute to the discussion at WP:Articles for deletion/J. Jaye Gold. But given, as the comments say, that it is a promotional piece sourced only to his work, there is little hope of saving it. If you want Wikipedia to have an article about Gold, you should let it be deleted, and start again with a draft, remembering that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, but only in what people wholly unconnected with the subject, and not prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about them in reliable sources. I suggest that you start by reading your first article carefully; and, if you have any connection with Gold yourself, also reading conflict of interest/ --ColinFine (talk) 22:45, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks ColinFine for looking again. A few questions, if you would... 1] You are saying that Arianna Huffington's publication Thrive Global, which Wikipedia describes as "an American company that provides behavior change technology etc.," is an unacceptable source? Is this accurate? Can this be changed? Can I prove these articles are not spam? 2] Re: the NPR "interview,"I am referencing the interviewer's comments, not Gold's... The interviewer herself is a secondary source, no? She appears to already have known the info about Gold that I am referencing. It was not revealed in/by the interview. Is this incorrect reasoning? I have found several other interviews by people who know him and say things about him. This is all inadmissible? Are you saying my sources must be tertiary? 3] re: FortWorth news link, I don't have the archived link yet. I have seen a xeroxed clipping, but may not be able to get online version. What to do? Delete? 4] Books, unfortunately, it seems to me, are on their way out of our lives. How will one reference secondary sources if not partially via online media...interviews, youtube videos, and so forth? 5] I've spent hours and hours comparing other BLPs... I see that the rules are often stretched. Just came across one with 11 of the 15 reference from subject's web page, and 2 identical from encyclopedia.com. If somebody writes Gold into an online encyclopedia tomorrow, can I use that as a source? You understand my frustration no doubt. Should I take out Bio, or nonprofit, or teaching sections?... just leave books? I appreciate your time and attention. Can/Should I paste to others on the Afd page? OK, Onganymede, think about it this way: What would make Gold significant enough to be the subject of an article in an encyclopedia? Most people are not that important. Does he meet any of the notability criteria for authors? If not does he meet the basic notability criteria? Blog posts by his students do not show notability: anybody can write a blog post. When I looked at your sources on 2 November, the only one that looked like a independent reliable source was the Los Angeles Times article, and that was pretty underwhelming: it says his book was not good but his book tour was entertaining. —teb728 t c 06:04, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

hello, I think one of user have aggression to me, he put GNG template to may articles, seriously all of articles, some of them he put PROD or AfD. @Almgerdeu: The problem, as I see it, is that you do not have much understanding of our notability criteria and the sources that you need to find and to put into an article in orer to demonstrate a person is Notable enough for a page to remain in this encyclopaedia. See WP:SPORTBASIC for a bit of specific guidance on sport-people. OK, so you are clearly fascinated by football referees, and so are the main types of website you cite in your rapidly-created pages: worldreferee.com ; eu-football.info ; thecelticwiki.com. Unfortunately, they all seem to be insider summary pages, with nothing to suggest real notability, just the jobs they've done. I am not aware that WP:NSPORTS has a criterion for notability of referees taking part in major tournaments. There seems to be no citations in your hastily made pages to published books, biographies or national media outlets - that talks about their participation and contribution to major sporting events, such as they refereed in the 1996 World Cup, followed by lots of indepth coverage of them as a person. That's what notability means. So, if you're going to carry on in this way, you must be prepared for a lot more PRODS and AFDs on notability grounds. The way to avoid that is to slow down, and spend real, quality time finding sources about these seemingly non-notable people. If you can't, then maybe it's best not to waste everyone's time - including your own - trying. That, to me, seems to be the bottom line, and I would encourage Spiderone to continue assessing your well-meant contributions - and perhaps offer you a bit of guidance and instruction along the way. @Almgerdeu: there is no aggression here. A number of users, not just me, have left messages on your talk page suggesting how articles could be improved. I have personally suggested that you try to use WP:DRAFT and WP:AFC to help you to understand what sort of articles are accepted and which ones are not. Unfortunately, not everyone is notable. I can tell that you have put a good chunk of time into a lot of these articles but, honestly, a lot of these people just do not meet WP:GNG. If a person cannot be sourced to anything more than World Referees or similar database websites then that person isn't notable. Me placing a GNG template on an article is not a personal attack but simply a reminder that the article makes no demonstration of how the subject is notable. I could go straight to PROD or AfD in almost all of these cases but I think it's important that you spend time trying to find sources that explore the referees in depth and, if they don't exist, then try to use self-control and not create the article. The only one that stands out to me as being hugely notable is Arturo Yamasaki. Honestly, the overwhelming majority of the others don't seem to have anything more than routine and passing mentions. Almgerdeu has created close to 100 stub-length articles on football referees. Many of these get Prod, then contested by Almgerdeu, then nominated to AfD, and then deleted. Is there a way to stop this insistence on creating articles which do not, and can not, meet Wikipedia's criteria for GNG? David notMD (talk) 04:04, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Since Almgerdeu is clearly acting in good faith, I'm not sure. If it were deliberately disruptive behaviour, I would go down the route of ANI and suggesting a topic ban but I don't think that's appropriate in this particular circumstance. Spiderone 09:13, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Profanity/curse words

If I find statement in a page that contains a cuss word, profanity or any from the Seven dirty words, how do I determine if its unencyclopedic or not? Because curse words seem informal, I'm more inclined to remove them. But I wanted to ask first here. Thanks. The third one might be, Sumit banaphar; but despite the cover date of 2006, it is a reprint of a book from 1899, and may not be reliable for c that reason. I would regard as suspect any book that says in the opening paragraph "the other a dark-complexioned race of lower type". This was no doubt acceptable in 1899, but today it is appalling racism, and casts all its contents into doubt. The other two both say, in their Google Books entry: "Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online", so citing them is the same as citing Wikipedia. ColinFine has already explained that the third book was published in 1899 and is blatantly racist. That it was reprinted in 2006 is by the way. WP:RAJ applies. Someohow I suspect that is never going to happen. Sumit is interested in just one thing - to prove that Banafar (his clan), and the two legendary heroes of Banafars (Udal of Mahoba and Alha), are pure-bred warrior-race, and has no mix of lowly Ahir race. Is entire presence on Wikipedia is dedicated to that endeavor. He also is interested in reading just one word in a book - "Banafar" - no matter what else is written in the sentence. Connection with subject

How can I avoid a personal connection when I am providing a history of a Pirate Station on which I was the operator, it is defunct so there is no current connection or COI. As the operator I am the only person who can detail the history, others have made websites about the station but I was there throughout the life of the station so I have more knowledge about it and have collected the articles and technical information, therefore I have expert knowledge is there a way to avoid the draft being rejected, and if it is will I have to abandon the article? I note the other stations in the category Pirate Radio Stations in the UK list have little more than stubs, and many have broken links to defunct sites. Comments appreciated

Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources that can be verified say about article subjects. 331dot (talk) thank you for help, I don't think I can write it using the reliable sources then, as I would still have the connection, I have published websites, where I have detailed the history, so if some unconnected historian or author were to use those and the books and magazines I've cited to create an article I guess that would be the answer. my article clearly won't be approved so I will save it for my reference and close the account, do you think it is even worth bothering to submit the draft or will I just be creating work for someone?Mark King (talk) 02:39, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Drafts are hard to find unless someone knows of their existence already. so writing a draft and leaving it for others would have a low probability of success. I don't know how much you have, but if you have at least three independent sources with significant coverage, you might have enough for a short article and that would be worth submitting through Articles for Creation.

Regarding closing accounts; there is no way to delete or close an account; if you no longer wish to use it, just abandon the account. Some people mark their accounts as "retired", but that's not required. If you would like to remove your name from your username, you can request a courtesy vanishing. 331dot (talk) 02:47, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi. I am new here. I want to publish articles. But it is impossible. Will it take time? I can only publish something on my page and also edit some posts that are not protected. You have created article-like content at your User page. The correct place is your Sandbox. You should cut-paste the content to there. Your User page is a place for descriptions of your intents and achievements as a Wikipedia editor. Early Miscarriage Awareness Day 9th November NOTABLE?

Hello, I am new and would like to write about Early Miscarriage Awareness Day which is on 9th November. Early gestation losses are still brushed under the carpet however cause huge emotional distress to those going through this heartache but in recent years since the awareness day launched I have seen gradual changes in the right direction which shows the awareness day is working! Hello, MrsMintyMum and welcome to the Teahouse. Thank you for asking your question. I appreciate this is a sensitive and emotional subject for many people (and I have some close person experience of the subject). However, this encyclopaedia is not a platform for promoting the myriad of 'XXX-Awareness Day' events that happen around the world, unless they have genuinely grown to become notable events in their own right, and have been written about in detail and in depth by many independent sources, especially mainstream media. Here, mere mentions are not sufficient - we know many things exist - Wikipedia just collates existing reliable sources that show a thing is 'Notable', and present that information back to its users. Simply Googling "Early Miscarriage Awareness Day" - and especially by going to the News section, I can see there simply aren't enough sources currently to make this a noteworthy article here in its own right. My genuine advice is that, as laudable as it may seem, going to that effort at this time would not produce the results you might have hoped for. Your previous edit is probably about as far on that topic as you ought to proceed. That said, if you find existing articles which are incomplete or poorly sourced, once you get a bit more practice, there is no reason why you should be able to added content and better references to them. I have left an introductory welcome for you on you talk page with some helpful links to get you started. I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging on this specific matter. @Neerajberi: It is a common trick for a commercial website to write a short, encyclopaedic piece about a topic and then try to place a link to it to draw traffic to the sales side of its website. It is also a common mistake that other editors might think it's OK to do so. But it is not. If you would like to look through all 6,185,748 Wikipedia articles and let us know which ones have commercially-orientated links in them, we will gladly remove them all. But we can only remove the ones we become aware of. You have already been warned by one administrator not to add such links to articles here. This administrator is now repeating that advice. Really hope someone can help me. I work at Waingels College and we are fortunate enough to have a wikipedia page. Unfortunately displayed on our page is our old school logo and I would really like to change this. I have been trying to do so but unfortunately due to copyright, I am unable to do so. Moises.jleon What you call "an informative page" is considered promotional on Wikipedia. You don't need to be soliciting customers or selling something. Wikipedia is not for merely providing information. This is an encyclopedia, and as an encyclopedia, articles (not mere "pages") must do more than merely tell about the subject. They must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about (in this case) a company, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Wikipedia has no interest in what a company wants to say about itself, only in what others completely unconnected with the company have chosen to say about it. @Eridian314: In general, I reccomend that you change your preferences. Two things in "Editing":

• Uncheck the checkbox "Temporerely disable the visual editor while it is in beta"
• Under "editing mode" make sure that the dropdown is set to "show me both tabs".

This will add a second edit link to the toolbar, next to the usual, which activates the visual editor. You can always switch from visual editor to source by using the pencil icon in the visual editor toolbar, or the other way round by clicking the same link you would click to start editing with the visual editor. Hello, GreenSuiteMan, and welcome to the Teahouse. You create an encyclopaedia article about a TV show the same way as you create an encyclopaedia article about anything else:

If you're going to write an article about anyone or anything that is not you or something you are connected to, here are the steps you should follow:

1) Choose a topic whose notability is attested by discussions of it in several reliable independent sources.

2) Gather as many professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources you can find. Google Books is a good resource for this. Also, while search engine results are not sources, they are where you can find sources. Just remember that they need to be professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources.

3) Focus on just the ones that are not dependent upon or affiliated with the subject, but still specifically about the subject and providing in-depth coverage (not passing mentions). If you do not have at least three such sources, the subject is not yet notable and trying to write an article at this point will only fail.

4) Summarize those sources left after step 3, adding citations at the end of them. You'll want to do this in a program with little/no formatting, like Microsoft Notepad or Notepad++, and not in something like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Make sure this summary is just bare statement of facts, phrased in a way that even someone who hates the subject can agree with.

5) Combine overlapping summaries where possible (without arriving at new statements that no individual source supports), repeating citations as needed.

6) Paraphrase the whole thing just to be extra sure you've avoided any copyright violations or plagiarism.

7) Use the Article wizard to post this draft and wait for approval.

8) Expand the article using sources you put aside in step 3 (but make sure they don't make up more than half the sources for the article, and make sure that affiliated sources don't make up more than half of that).

Doing something besides those steps typically results in the article not being approved, or even in its deletion.

If you are writing about yourself, or someone or something you are connected with (such as a friend, family member, or your business), the following steps are different:

0) If the subject really was notable, you wouldn't need to write the article. Remember that articles are owned by the Wikipedia community as a whole, not the article subject or the article author. If you do not want other people to write about you, then starting an article about yourself is a bad idea.

8a) If the article is accepted, never edit it again. Instead, make edit requests on the article's talk page.

Neil_Cross_(cricketer) is repeatedly being vandalized by 2 anonymous users. What should I do to report this? The last legitimate edit was [5]. Arminden, there are multiple ways, however, I think the simplest way is to go to your URL and type "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:" and after "Category:", type in the title of the category and click go. Alternatively, create a red-link by typing [[:Category:]] in a sandbox, and after ":Category:", type in the title of the category and publish. Click the red-link. Both will get you to a page, click "Create" and you can create a category. If you instead need help assembling a category, please let me know! Enjoy your stay at the teahouse! Arminden I'm afraid HeartGlow30797 forgot one absolutely critical bit of advice. All categories must have at least one parent category. I have added to the category you created, Category:Architects in Ottoman Palestine the parent category Category:Architects of the Ottoman Empire. You will notice there that your new category is the only one that subdivides Ottoman architects by the various countries/regions of the empire, which is a somewhat lopsided situation. Given the fairly small number of Ottoman architect articles we currently have I'm not sure such subcategorisation is really needed. The question "how to create a category" only covers one part of the issue, one must also consider whether creating a particular category is really justified or neccessary. If I write [[author name]] and the author does not exist, it goes to the create an new page. However, if the [[author name]] is not unique, it goes to a disambiguation page. Wikipedia images

I have an issue with wikipedia the website feels out of date and old to be precise - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SmashingPumpkins-SiameseDream.jpg - this image is from 2007 - i think it should be updated to a much bigger one and as i am not allowed to edit that page - i guess the right person at wikipedia needs to be notified of such an issue i'm sure in 2007 it was a bandwidth issue to have such a small image - but in 2020?

i have noticed this with a lot of images on wikipedia - but this one made me want to do this
so if you can tell your boss to get it sorted that would be swell

Most images on the net, or published anywhere, are copyright in ways that Wikipedia cannot use them consistently with its policies. Because this limits the available images, there are certain exceptions whether images are used under "fair use": typically for logos, album and book covers, and posters. One of these conditions (3b in WP:NFCC) is that they should be small and low resolution copies where possible. So where appropriate an image could be replaced by a newer one; but replacing it by a larger or higher-resolution image would be contrary to Wikipedia's policies, and risk infringing somebody's copyright. I cannot work out where to make my comment. Basically my comment is to say that the article is mostly quite good except that the para above the heading "German strategy" is totally dire and needs rewriting completely.

Hello, Rochellacooper. (Just for your information: you managed to remove a lot of questions on this page with your first edit; so somebody reverted your edit, and I then added back your question. Nobody will hold this against you, but you should know that this happened). Looking at Draft:Lester J. Brown, I'm afraid you have made a number of classic beginner's mistakes. (Again, don't worry: we all make them). One is trying to plunge in and create a new article, possibly the most difficult task there is in editing Wikipedia, without having spent some time learning how Wikipedia works. The second is writing an article from what you know: Wikipedia isn't interested in what you know (or what I know, or what any random person on the internet knows). It is also not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves. It is only interested in what people who have no connection to the subject of the article, and have not been prompted or fed information by or on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish in WP:reliable sources. It follows that the first task in creating an article, before creating a draft or writing a word, is to find such reliably-published independent sources which discuss the subject at some length; because if you can't find such sources, then it is not going to be possible to write an acceptable article, and it is a waste of everyone's effort going any further. (The Wikipedia jargon for this is whether or not the subject is notable). Your user page is not article space, but a place for you to tell the Wikipedia community about yourself as a Wikipedia editor or user. People merit a Wikipedia article if they receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources that have chosen on their own to offer it, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person, or in your case, a a notable academic. Autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged under the autobiography policy, as people naturally write favorably about themselves. Wikipedia is primarily interested in what others say about a person, not what the person says about themselves.

I don't think there's a way of transferring an article directly: you'll need to create an article hy:Ծրագրակազմի Ճարտարագիտություն in whatever way hy-wiki allows you to create articles, and then paste the source into it. Trivia and pop culture sections on articles for everyday subjects

Hi. If anyone wants to take a look, a lot of our articles for numbers (ex. 20 (number)) are loaded with trivia sections pertaining to their usage in popular culture (like music, sports teams, and overall non-mathematic and irrelevant topics). Almost all of these are trivial things like a certain sports team containing a certain number of players (seriously?) or an album being named after a number. It's basically just an incorporation of the disambiguation page into the article, which is really redundant since we already link the disambig at the top of the article for readers to find different topics; we don't need repeats. Not helping is the fact that a majority of this information is unsourced.

There's also sections dedicated to certain privileges attainable at certain ages. Those might be helpful as we don't have certain articles for the ages (ex. "20 (age)", but then again there's nothing much to say about being a certain age and we already have separate articles denoting the various age spans from birth to old age), but they also suffer from the same problem of uncited statements, and we already mention these facts in the articles for the various stages of aging.

That said, is it really necessary to dedicate whole sections in number articles to its trivial details in culture? I think only stuff about the numbers' impact in mathematics and the history behind said numbers should be documented. Bearswitch (talk) 19:20, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Someone put up an account in my name.

I found an account on here in my name "Fred Batt" but a lot of it was either just making a mockery of me or was wrong information so I altered the parts that were wrong or bad but they kept being changed back. I alyered it about 3 or 4 times.

I have just opened up another account in the same name but in capital letters, "FRED BATT" and altered the othe page,in my name "Fred Batt" to how it should be.

How can I make this permanent so nobody can just go on there and alter it.

I am the demonologist in the TV show Most Maunted so I probably get a lot of visitors on there. Hope someone can help.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that has articles. Hey, I'm sorry to hear you've encountered an article about yourself which you think needs correcting. However, the advice given above by 331dot is spot on. Obviously, if there is wholly malicious and uncited content about Fred Batt, you, like anyone else is free to simply delete it (explained at this page). We take very seriously anyone messing around with biographies of living people, just as we do if someone should choose a username of a famous person and use it to edit under. Please don't take it personally, but I feel I am obliged to give a 'SOFTBLOCK to your account - purely to protect the real Fred Batt. OK, that's probably you - but please understand that we have no way of knowing that, except that the message that will be left on your talk page will explain how you can send an email from a valid account to prove that the account is, well, legitimately you. Once that's done, your account will be unfrozen for you. You will be in good company - I did precisely the same thing to BBC TV news journalist, Mark Easton, a year or two ago (see here). He then simply sent in an email from the BBC to what we call our 'OTRS' Team to prove that, well, he was who he claimed he was. He wanted to remove cited content which gave a very biased picture of himself - which was probably quite justified. But we had no way of knowing without first blocking (and then unblocking) his named account. Cite error references missing key

Hi there, the article I am working on for a Wikipedia Education class - Commercial Radio Australia, has just received a notification of a "cite error" at the bottom of the page, saying that two references are not used in the content. I am confused as to how this is the case - as both references are used in the article. Could someone help me with how to address/eliminate these?

I have also noticed that this Wikipedia page is flagged as having an "unclear citation style". This flag appeared before I cleaned up the notes and references sections. I have since polished the references to ensure there is a clear citation style - is there a way in which I can remove this template?

No, the references with those names are not used (i.e. there is nowhere in your article that contains the sequence <ref name="ACMA"/>). You have a similar reference (the same title, but a different URL) as reference 9. I haven't looked at the other one.

If you are happy that you have remedied the problem in the cleanup tag, you may remove it: simply find the template at the top of the source and remove it. --ColinFine (talk) 23:52, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

​@SM9237: As I previously advised you in Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1082#References appear in Notes section upon using "Cite" Tool, you should not just unilaterally change the citation style of an article to something you prefer per WP:CITEVAR. You should’ve at least try to discuss this on the article’s talk page first or tried to adopt the style already established in the article. This kind of thing can sometimes lead to problems between editors, particularly when one of them is a student editor who may not be ver familiar with Wikipedia. Our town in Australia , NSW , Gwydir Shire Council 2402 have started to post council meeting recorded onto your site . claimed as being democratic . But the other day when I found them and listened to them , I reported some concerns with statements made during the meeting . Now this seems to have been removed and others can't hear the same comments , is this correct for them to remove sections and yet claim its being done to comply with the democratic ideal .

It's all new stuff here , but should they be able to remove information .

(This is the first time I have used the teahouse.) Hi there, you dont know me and I dont know you, but I'm currently involved in an edit war on the article British Columbia, I put a fact on there about the capital of BC, so I wrote that Victoria is on Vancouver Island, which is completely true. An administrator rejects my contribution and reverts it. He also emails an administrator on his talkpage regarding another one of my problematic edits on Donald Trump, I put it back up there (the fact about Victoria) when I noticed what he had done, so i wrote it again, a different admin reverts it. I dont want to get banned for edit-warring, and I have no idea why two admins would revert my edits on BC. If any of you guys could help me with this problem I would be extremely grateful. Thanks

The fact that Victoria is on Vancouver Island is stated in the geography section. The Wikilink to Victoria, British Columbia has the same information. Pictures of notable people on Wiki articles that are not about those people

Is it appropriate to put a picture of a notable person (who has his own Wikipedia page) on other pages which are relevant to that person? For instance, in the case of Rodney Atkins, the country musician, I put a photo of him on two schools that he attended where his name is mentioned as a notable alumnus: Walters State Community College and Tennessee Technological University; plus on his hometown of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee; but another editor, AppalachianCentrist removed those pictures. Please tell me what the policy is for placing pictures in such cases, because I have seen many pages where notable alumni or people from a small town who became well-known, do have their photos on those related pages. Meta data in my photos can lead to my address. Can it be deleted?

As the subject says: can the meta data with my location be deleted from my pictures? Or can someone do this for me? Maybe it can be automated or something? @Marc NL: Three points: Firstly, in future, try to remember to delete exif data before uploading if youve set you camera to add personal information. Secondly, your question needs to be asked at Wikimedia Commons, which is where I assume your images were uploaded to. Thirdly, it's always best to approach an administrator there by email with your concerns, rather than using a public forum, as this tends to advertise the issue and thus make people go and look. My wikipedia pages stuck in review?

Hi I have submitted two pages one on a public figure/author!/activist called Scott McGlynn and a TV show called Car and Country. I submitted them nearly a month ago with no response, is this normal? To top it off Scott has had an email from a freelancer saying they spotted his page in review and have offered to perfect it so it will get reviewed/sorted quicker for a fee.
