is there any particular reason
for not adding talk page tags? (projects) not a big deal either way, just wondering... JarrahTree 12:27, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- I am not sure what you are referring to.--User:Namiba 12:56, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- A large number of the categories and articles that you create have red links for the talk page - however the usual approach to the material is to have projects added -
from my experience of research re labour history in western australia - I have added items relevant: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Industrial_Workers_of_the_World_in_Australia it might not fit all items, just the unique circumstances of that subject.
in a lot of circumstance it is much simpler - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Industrial_Workers_of_the_World_in_Canada JarrahTree 13:06, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- I don't tend to add tags. Others will add them if they want to do so. Everyone has different editing habits.--User:Namiba 13:08, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
Indeed - thank you so much for your reply - that's fine - there are often many corners of wikipedia where no one is the slightest interested. But thank you very much for your main space additions about organised labour - very thorough, and thank you JarrahTree 13:18, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

Crystal Dangerfield
Hi, Namiba. Do you have any interest in working on Crystal Dangerfield for DYK? I have about four days left to expand it fivefold, and it's already approximately that long. Thank you for starting this article! I am just a fan. - (talk) 02:02, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi SusanLesch, the article looks great. You've done a lot of work to improve it from the stub I created. I don't have the time to work on it myself but I appreciate the work you've done. One small thing: a few of the points in the personal life section (like her favorite movie etc) seem trivial. Not sure if they should be included in an encyclopedia article.--User:Namiba 02:54, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you again for creating this. Agreed trivia is out of place in Wikipedia. I just think it's important to show nobody is 100% their sport. Does it look better now or should I remove the sentence: spending time with...? -SusanLesch (talk) 15:38, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- I think the "she enjoys..." sentence is probably not necessary. Those aren't particularly unique characteristics that cannot be written about most other people.--User:Namiba 17:25, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

High schools
Here is a link to US Cities notable people[1] criteria. People articles get categorized by where they were born or lived. Not gone to school. Going to school in Foo doesn't automatically make you from Foo. That has been the consensus around WP. You know why? I will give 3 examples-
Centereach High School students can come from Centereach, New York but also from Lake Grove, New York and even Selden, New York
Deerfield Beach High School students can come from Deerfield Beach, Florida, but also from Lighthouse Point, Florida, Hillsboro Beach, Florida, Coral Springs, Florida, and Parkland, Florida.
Lake Worth High School students can come from Lake Worth, Florida, but also from Atlantis, Florida, Lantana, Florida
and on and on and on....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 16:19, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

My thanks and appreciation for your work
I want to extend my thanks for all of your work, especially when there are people who make edits like this out of what appears to be malice. It's a shame that there are people here trying to build an encyclopedia and others who work so hard to destroy it. Sadly, I'm at ANI with this editor's spiteful reverts and stalking, but I at least hope it takes some off some of the heat that had been directed at you. Again, my sincere appreciation. Hi, I've withdrawn the CfD for now. I proposed discussing things on the talk page first not because the RfC should be here, but to see if we can agree on how to pose the RfC question. SportingFlyer T·C 14:46, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

Proposed RfC
This RfC is to get consensus on clarification for WP:OCLOCATION in a very specific topic area: sports.
Dating back to the origin of WP:OCLOCATION, CfDs have consistently held that sportspeople should be categorised under two different directory structures: Basketball player by country/state, and Sportspeople by City: here and here (which has links to seven other previous CfDs). For an example of a sportsperson who is categorised in this way, see Luka Modrić.
In 2007, Dugwiki wrote this essay explaining the reasoning behind WP:OCLOCATION, which noted Do not replace national categories with state ones or city ones within an article because not all states and cities have occupational groupings. For example, a California writer should be under both Category:American writers (or a subcategory) and Category:California writers. Keep in mind that the goal here isn't to subdivide the occupation, but is simply to subdivide the geographical area.
The project has operated under these guidelines for at least 13 years.
Recently, but mostly this year, many sub-categories have been created in the Category:Sportspeople by city or town category against the existing consensus. For instance, all three categories in Category:Curlers by city or town were created in 2020, as was Category:Canoeists by city or town, Category:Fencers by city or town, and many others.
Furthermore, in the last month, two WP:OCLOCATION CfDs have closed as no consensus: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_December_1#Basketball_players_by_city_or_town_in_the_United_States and Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_November_15#Category:Basketball_players_from_Shkodër.
This has created a situation where consensus might be changing, but if it's not changing, cleanup efforts will be needed because of the recent proliferation of these categories. This RfC has been created to determine centralised consensus in order to provide clarity and avoid future conflict. The three options follow below:
- Option A: Maintain the status quo and continue categorising sportspeople by their sport and country/state of origin, and then "Sportspeople from X" for city.
- Option B: Maintain the status quo but allow exceptions for specific large cities which may be defining, such as Category:Basketball players from New York City (possibly as non-diffusing categories.)
- Option C: Change the status quo and allow players to be diffused by intersection of sport and city.
There is also a separate issue which has been identified where some players have been categorised into multiple locations, such as Stuart Pearce being "from" three different parts of London. That is beyond the scope of this discussion, but a follow-up conversation may be needed depending on this RfC's result. SportingFlyer T·C 14:07, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for writing this question, but I disagree with framing it as a clear change in consensus. There are numerous examples of similar categories existing for years with no issue. The issues has been that certain editors have opposed it for US categories while categories around the world are undisputed. I would rather frame it as an up or down with prejudicing the question of an existing consensus. As the most recent CFDs have shown, there is no present consensus. Moreover, WP:OCLOCATION allows for spliting large categories by location, which is the issue at hand. I would be happy to clarify that small categories should not be split by profession but large ones (say ones containing over 20 entries) can be split.--
- I don't think that's a correct assessment. I've gone through most of the categories in that list and most of them were created in 2019 or 2020. I wouldn't call them undisputed. The ones I saw that weren't were rugby league or cricket. SportingFlyer T·C 15:06, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- Category:Basketball players from Greater London was created in 2015. Category:Boxers from Greater London (2017). Category:Footballers from Medellín (2017). Category:Association footballers from Auckland (2016). Those are just a random assortment of said categories and none are rugby league or cricket. As I said, opposition to these categories has been almost unanimously focused on preventing their growth among US sportspeople.--User:Namiba 20:15, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- That's fine - the majority of these have been created this year, and "Golfers from Leeds" (linked above) wasn't US-focused. Are you opposed if I nominate non-US categories at CfD instead of running the RfC? SportingFlyer T·C 17:47, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- I am opposed to nominating them for deletion in general. I think most of them are useful categories supported by policy. I would support a higher standard than the consensus of 5 to avoid being considered a small category but I do not support deletion. As I said, I don't think endless CFD's are the right way to make policy.--User:Namiba 18:33, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- What would you propose as a way forward? SportingFlyer T·C 15:10, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- I think that this issue goes far beyond sportspeople categories. For example, there are 82 subcategories of Category:Military personnel by city, 16 subcategories at Category:American physicians by city, 124 subcategories of Category:Scientists by country and city, and 89 subcategories of Category:Architects by city to name just a few similar trees. I think it would be better to rewrite the policy to recognize that such categories should exist (when they contain a certain number of entries) rather than try to delete hundreds or even thousands of such categories.--User:Namiba 18:57, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Basketball Players from Philadelphia category
Do you think I should make a category of basketball players from philadelphia? I'm afraid the category is going get sent to CFD briskly. I believe that this should be a category for the same reason why Category:Basketball players from Los Angeles was created, due to it's rich basketbal culture and history dating back to the early days of the NBA with Wilt Chamberlain. Please feel free to leave your thoughts on the propose category. ₛₒₘₑBₒdyₐₙyBₒdy₀₅ (talk) 16:30, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- I think it is warranted on multiple levels. On top of the reasons you describe above, Category:Sportspeople from Philadelphia is overpopulated. However, it will probably be nominated for deletion at the present moment. As you can see from the above thread, there will likely be an RFC on such categories in the near future. If you do create it, I would suggest having the sources prepared to demonstrate how it is a unique topic in its own right.--User:Namiba 18:44, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

The article Oyabe, Gabon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
This is an unsourced stub that is no better than a WP:DICDEF. Despite looking for this place both on and off-line (in the Times Atlas of the World) I can find no evidence that the place actually exists. The given coordinates are in the middle of wilderness, not near any roads or other communications, and no evidence of any settlement is visible
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — O Still Small Voice of Clam 07:24, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi, are you sure "Farmingham, Maine" is "Farmington, Maine"? I thought the same at first, but then I found "Farmingham road, Littleton, Maine" around 46°12'38.2"N 67°48'28.5"W no were near Farmington, so I think it may be not renamed, but just gone. All I could find was postcards of the place and a few mentions in the old newspapers. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 14:45, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Oh I'm so blind, that's "Framingham Rd" not "Farmingham Rd"! KylieTastic (talk) 14:48, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- I am fairly certain it is referring to Farmington, Maine but I've emailed the Farmington Public Library to confirm if that is a former or incorrect name of the town. I will change it back to Farmingham if I am unable to confirm.--User:Namiba 15:13, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yup I think your right. This Postcard labelled "Farmingham" on the page actually has Farmington written on it, also I found an old book referencing "Sandy River Framingham" which would also collaborate it is just an old use or probbably just a misspelling of Farmington that got copied about a bit. Request to view two cited sources in your Benjamin Bubar article.
Hello Namiba, my name is José and I'm working on a project in collaboration with members of the Rockland, Maine Historical Society about the Klan's presence in the Midcoast and more broadly Maine throughout history.
In scouring through issues of Rockland's Courier Gazette (which I had digitized a few decades of as a pretty sweet high school job), I noticed Bubar's name associated with some Klan figures of the time, and came across the article.
In particular, I am interested in the citation from the 1935 "Biographical Sketches of Members of Senate and House of Representatives of Maine" noting his connection to Billy Sunday as well as the article in the BDN noting his Klan connections. I was unable to find the Biographical Sketches in particular archived anywhere digitally, so I'm hoping if you have a physical copy, could you potentially photograph/scan the section about Bubar. Additionally, a screenshot/clipping of the article describing Bubar's gubernatorial run in 1934 and Klan connections would be very helpful.
if you want to reach me, the best way is via email. My address is Joe8937@gmail.com, if you're at all interested in the project I'm working on, then feel free to ask any questions! In viewing your page (still getting used to navigating this side of Wikipedia, although my heart tells me I need to start editing of course) I've also noticed an interest in the labor history of Maine, and this is another aspect I'm hoping to find more resources on.
Thank you,
José
- Hi Jose, I would prefer not to email you privately, but an amazing resource for basic information on any state legislator is the Maine State Legislative Library, which can be reached at Lawlib.Reference@legislature.maine.gov. The reference librarian sent me what they have on Bubar as part of my research for the article. Regarding his connection to the Klan, I found letters from Bubar to his wife on Klan letterhead in the Bubar archive in special collections at the Fogler Library. I suggest signing up for a free trial for newspapers.com in order to look at the article in the citation. You can also look it up at any library with microfilm for the Bangor Daily News (like the Maine State Library, Fogler Library, and more).--User:Namiba 19:59, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
My response for the creation of Category:Politicians from Fredericton
Hi Namiba, I thank you for creating the category entitled Category:Politicians from Fredericton as my response. I was reacting when I saw Category:Politicians from Fredericton and you replace from Category:People from Fredericton into Category:Politicians from Fredericton. When you're offline from changing categories. I was getting ready to have a chance for some editing assistance by myself because why, I change from "People from Fredericton" into "Politicians from Fredericton" by myself. So if you can thank me for editing assistance by changing the category into Category:Politicians from Fredericton that would be great. I change it two days ago and yesterday. I hope you will respond by thanking me for some editing assistance by changing to Category:Politicians from Fredericton. So thanks for the message I hope you will respond by thanking me by changing to "Politicians from Fredericton" two days ago and yesterday. Go to Category:Politicians from Fredericton and click on "Related changes" all of my edits will go under "2001:569". Thanks for the message and stay healthy during the difficult COVID-19.
