The first dog
[edit]
- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was disambiguate. I've drafted a DAB at First dog, to which I've retargeted these two titles; I will as a common-sense action (not per se part of this close) also retarget First Dog there. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 00:57, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Along with the other redirect, The first dog, these should be retargeted to United States presidential pets. Obama is not the only President to have had a dog. TraderCharlotte (talk) 21:13, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Those dogs may have been the most important in one country, but they weren't the first. Domestication of the dog#Morphological divergence covers earlier dogs. Certes (talk) 21:53, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Dismabiguate to the two targets suggested here ("US pets" and "dog domestication") -- 64.229.88.43 (talk) 02:41, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget to United States presidential pets, with a hatnote to Domestication of the dog#Morphological divergence. — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! (投稿) 21:15, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
- Disambiguate per 64. The dab page should probably be at First dog per WP:DABNAME. Dogs of the First Family of the United States are not the only ones known as "First Dogs"; the media also call state governor's dogs like Sutter Brown and Baxter LePage by that title. Also the US is not the only country in the world with a First Family who keeps pet dogs either [1]. When other country's First Dogs meet WP:DABMENTION they can be added to the dab page too. 61.239.39.90 (talk) 00:06, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Relisting to add The first dog which was also intended to be discussed by the nom.

- Disambiguate jointly with first dog and capitalisation variants, there's also First Dog on the Moon. —Kusma (talk) 12:36, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

- Complex algebra → Field of sets (talk · links · history · stats) [ Closure: keep/retarget/delete ]
Confusing: Probalbly, most people searching this phrase would search algebra over the complex numbers. D.Lazard (talk) 19:44, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget per nominator. Also, I think readers are also looking for complex numbers that explain more basic topics, so I suggest adding a hat note. --SilverMatsu (talk) 00:13, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Expand into its own article if possible. The complex numbers are extremely widespread and important in mathematics, and the article can describe the principles of field algebra as applied to the complex numbers specifically. ChromaNebula (talk) 04:28, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Relisted due to a suggestion to create an article also appearing.

- Comment Apparently, "complex" is an archaic term for subgroup, and the current target describes algebra of subgroups. The far more common modern usage is algebra on complex numbers (in the sense). Certes (talk) 22:06, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Certes According to Complex#Mathematics, a complex is just an element of a field/algebra of sets. Considering that subgroups are not closed under complements and unions, I'm not sure where you are getting that definition from. 1234qwer1234qwer4 11:41, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- Perhaps I've oversimplified or simply misunderstood what the article was trying to say. However, the main point is that the term is ambiguous, and many readers who are not set theory specialists would think of algebra involving . Certes (talk) 12:23, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, CycloneYoris talk! 23:15, 15 July 2022 (UTC)- Disambiguate per above. Dozens of potentials, strong argument that the current target isn't even the primary (as this is now the name of an entire video game genre). Recommend moving the dab page to here. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 19:42, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep. This seems like a clear application of WP:DIFFCAPS: the redirect is at harvest moon and the disambiguation page is at Harvest Moon. The astronomical event is the only item on the disambiguation page that isn't a proper name, so the redirect isn't ambiguous. - Eureka Lott 20:07, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Deletion.
- IT SERVES NO PURPOSE: it's an Arabic word meaning many things, mainly "season", which hasn't entered English.
- There is a Wiktionary entry for the word (written in Arabic, true), see here.
- We have Mawsim (disambiguation). The Wiktionary entry is linked there.
- It's wrong in terms of the stated meaning, the main one being "season" and none being "weather".
- It's formally wrong: "Weather" should be with lower-case w, but that's soo secondary. Arminden (talk) 16:08, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was speedy delete as vandalism under the G3 criterion. Creator has declined to explain herself despite a request on her talkpage, and has continued to edit, so I will take that as an acknowledgment that this redirect serves no non-vandalistic purpose. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 22:18, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- Bush Dick Incident → Presidency of George W. Bush (talk · links · history · stats) [ Closure: keep/retarget/delete ]
Not mentioned at target, delete unless a justification can be provided. signed, Rosguill talk 15:17, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Deleteper nom. While there are multiple instances of the word "Dick" at the target, all of them relate to Dick Cheney (Bush's vice president) and none in relation to a specific incident that might plausibly bear the latter's name. There are a few web hits but none that are both clearly relevant and referring to a specific incident, the closest being this Reddit thread where this redirect is referenced in a thread of GPT2 bots talking to each other (at least I think that's what it is). So, not only is it not mentioned at the target, I can't even work out where to start looking for a mention under a slightly different name. Thryduulf (talk) 15:56, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Cricket has been at the SA Games twice: 2010 and Cricket at the 2019 South Asian Games. Redirecting to the 2010 edition is therefore misleading, better to delete the redirect, and maybe in future, someone could create a general article at this title, if it meets WP:GNG. - Keep The purpose of this template is not frivolous; it is to assist editors importing template documentation from German Wikipedia, especially if they are new or unfamiliar with our documentation. At the very least it should be "subst"ed, as is common Wikipedia practice. The reason for the low usage is that editors who know what they're doing will have manually done this in the past, but an automatic replacement would be better. Bermicourt (talk) 14:54, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep As noted above, this redirect is used to retain documentation functionality when porting templates from de.wikipedia. As you may know, de.wikipedia has a strong template development culture, and created some incredible functionality that en.wikipedia now uses, like the BS icons, and they continue to create templates of use to our project. - The result of the discussion was retarget to 1966 in Japan. While the fate of other "Showa X" / "Shōwa X" redirects is beyond the formal scope of this RfD, I think WP:BOLD retargets would be likely noncontroversial for years after 1945; per IP61, the stated logic for this retarget does not necessarily apply for 1945 or prior, and a second RfD may be needed for those. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 04:18, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

- Retarget to 1966 in Japan: Only in Japan do they used this numbering system, so people searching for Showa 41 are almost certainly going to look for Japan-related information. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:52, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget to 1966 in Japan per Oiyarbepsy. Beefaloe (formerly SpursySituation) (talk) 22:17, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget to 1966 in Japan - Probably similar redirects should be retargeted in the same manner. A7V2 (talk) 02:25, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

"China" in Cyrillic. Created by since-banned User:Neelix. I don't think we need this redirect. TraderCharlotte (talk) 03:13, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- I do not think this redirect is necessary either. The English Wikipedia is not a repository of redirects for every language. Yue🌙 05:15, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget either back to the long-term stable target Cathay (where this pointed for 14 years before being pointed to China by a sockpuppet), or to Names of China, both of which discuss this name. Compare the treatment of other non-English names for countries, e.g. Ilbon and Rìběn → Names of Japan, Miandian and Brahmadesh → Names of Myanmar, ベトナム and 越南 → Names of Vietnam, etc. 61.239.39.90 (talk) 15:47, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget per the IP user above. The term is mentioned at Cathay. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 07:32, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget to Names of China where the term is discussed. The article also points to Cathay so that article is also served --Lenticel (talk) 05:55, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
- Retarget to Names of China, primary topic that also links to Cathay. People will find what they are looking for this way. Fieari (talk) 05:08, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Retarget to Names of China or to Cathay?

- Retarget to Names of China, just like 德國 redirects to Names of Germany. —Kusma (talk) 16:01, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
