How do I figure out if proposing a bot is feasible?

Hi, everyone, and hope you're well. I was looking through my old edits and thought, "Why isn't there a bot that auto-adds Template:Tref to the end of talk page sections that are missing one and contain <ref> tags, the way SineBot detects unsigned comments and signs them?" Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 10:53, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See Template_talk:Reflist-talk#Bot_proposal and the subsequent section "Explanatory note". It might also be worth pinging @GreenC: who ran the bot back in 2019. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 12:19, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It last ran March 2022 see User:GreenC_bot/Job_8 .. each time it runs there are fewer hits. I'll probably run it again soon. -- GreenC 14:35, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I guess people have been better at adding Tref to talk pages? Anyway, I figured someone else had already thought of the idea—just didn't know who—and now I do! Thanks again, Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 16:15, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GreenC: thanks for clearing the runs up, I was just going by the talk page. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:00, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Redirect

    How to remove a redirect to a page? Shahin007h (talk) 13:14, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Shahin007h: Hi there! Please see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:59, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Shahin007h: GoingBatty's instructions are for when you want to delete a redirect (make it a redlink). If you would like to overwrite a redirect, for example to turn it into another article or turn it into a stand-alone page, that can technically be done by anyone, see Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects, to wit "To edit a page that is already a redirect (or to view its history, talk page, etc.), follow the redirect to the target page, then click on the link in the "(Redirected from ...)" notice at the top of the page. This takes you to the redirect page itself. (The URL for accessing a redirect page without following the redirect contains the query parameter redirect=no.) Another way to get to a redirect page is to go to the target page, and click "What links here" (in the toolbox on the left of the page). This will show you all the backlinks to that page, including redirects. Clicking on a redirect in this list will take you to the redirect page, not the target." --Jayron32 15:10, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Similar vandalism from IP from United Arab Emirates

    Hello

Last month we from the WikiProject Handball noticed (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Handball#IP vandalism) that IP's from the United Arab Emirates with the start 2001:8F8:1471:37C1:** made several edits which were vandalism. Mostly the IPs deleted the row in the tables of handball tournaments which says that the 2020 edition was cancelled due to covid. Like: [1]

I left a notice at the talk page of the IP but the IP chanced and the behavior continuous. I have not a lot of knowledge how we could stop this person from further vandalism. Should I report this IP's to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations or what are the further steps? 🤾‍♂️ Malo95 (talk) 08:42, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello, Malo95. WP:ANV is the appropriate place. ColinFine (talk) 11:10, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's in the menu that you will see when you click the three-horizontal-bar icon, also called a "hamburger", which is to the left of the Wikipedia logo at the top of (all? most?) pages... at least that's where I see it, using the Vector 2022 skin. Publish Status

Hello. How can I know if the article I have created is in the process of being published? I am new on Wikipedia and not sure how it works. I still see "Draft" and no option to publish it.

The article name is "Gulf Data Hub". Fadishwaihat12 (talk) 10:48, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the submit code to your draft Draft:Gulf Data Hub, but be advised it will be declined, as it is just blatant advertising, do you have a conflict of interest by any chance? Theroadislong (talk) 10:53, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please understand that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Talk Page History

Is there a way to view your talk page history, to see all your recorded interactions on every one of those pages? Cadevo86 (talk) 17:07, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cadevo86: Yes. Once you're on User talk:Cadevo86, you can click on "View history" above the header to view all the edits made to your page. If you're talking about your own edits, you can (assuming you're using the default skin) click on the in the top-right corner then "Contributions" from the dropdown menu. If you're looking for specifically edits you made to the Talk namespace, you can click on the "Search for contributions" dropdown and change the Namespace dropdown to "Talk". —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:15, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is what I was looking for. I meant if there was a page that stored your history of interactions on different talk pages from all across Wikipedia. That way, I could find where I made certain comments and what article they were connected to. Cadevo86 (talk) 03:36, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cadevo86 It might depend on which "skin" you are using. For me, using the new Vector 2022 skin: at my userpage, the "tools" menu near the top has "User Contributions". Clicking this shows me all of my edits, to all pages of all types. If there's a way to filter this, someone will post here and tell us in a bit.  :-) David10244 (talk) 10:26, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cadevo86 I wondered if by "all of Wikipedia" you meant in the various language versions. However, your global contribution history shows you have only ever edited on en.wikipedia and, indeed, you have only 24 edits since account creation. The record shows that just one was ever made on a Talk Page, on 7 September 2022 (unless some were rev-deleted). I'm therefore unclear what you expect to see. Tenryuu's advice is accurate, as you will see when you have made more edits or if you try the same process on another editors contributions. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:13, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I meant edits made to talk pages (not necessarily in other languages). Since I only made one (thought I had done more), I guess I hadn't noticed it among the other article edits, and assumed that the user contributions page didn't show talk page interactions. Thank you for the help! Cadevo86 (talk) 13:57, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What should be done about Ahistoricism?

Hello again, and hope you're doing well. I came across Ahistoricism and wondered what should be done with it. There doesn't seem to be an obvious merge or redirect target...but turning it into a dab also doesn't seem to fit (since I wouldn't know how to retarget the incoming links. Would a soft redirect to Wiktionary work? Thank you in advanced for any input. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 21:07, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit on al-Badr labeling it as an terrorist organisation

My recent edit on al-Badr got reverted saying that it is not in accordance with the contentious topics policy. Whereas the policy states that value laden labels such as terrorist can be used if there are multiple reliable sources for it. There are four reliable links in the very beginning stating that al-Badr is an terrorist group. Also US and India has designated it as a terrorist group. There are no solid reasons for reverting the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Parth.297 (talkcontribs) 09:42, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Parth.297 It would help if you would "re-cite" the references that support the "terrorist" tag, right after the word "terrorist". That is, create another "ref", inline, that points to the reliable source(s). The way you made your edit, it appears that your addition is unreferenced or unsupported. As long as the sources are truly reliable, that edit should stick -- although a more experienced editor might disagree with me -- that's a loaded word. David10244 (talk) 10:31, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@David10244 @Parth.297 The current state of the page shows a perfectly adequate explanation of the subject's status. It is mentioned in the lead and an entire section in the body is devoted to the matter. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:45, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editing/adding a credit to my page.

I am Alan Campbell an actor....I wish to add a recent TV credit to my page. The last time I tried to do this myself I literally screwed the pooch and created a lot of visual issues with the TV portion of my credits. Another volunteer editor helped me out and saved the day. Not sure how it works to ask again for help. Probably not rocket science but seems to have escaped my very limited technical abilities. Anyone?

    The new credit:

Don't worry. If you have forgotten your login information and did not attach an email address to your account to recover the password, you will need to create a new account. You should identify it on the user page as a successor to your old account("I am User5678, I was previously User1234 but lost access")331dot (talk) 18:01, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Page display issue

On this page, the 2012 and 2014 "electoral history" display makes the whole page "shrink" to fit the screen. These two features are wider than the rest of the page. When I click on "hide"- the page appears normal.

Can or should the default setting be to "hide" these features to allow the page to display normally?

Is there a way to have these features display without "shrinking" the page?

Are there other pages that have this same issue?

Please, let me know if there is a better place to discuss this display issue.

@Ooligan MOS:DONTHIDE says text should not be hidden because it can interfere with readers' ability to access content.
I, too, get frustrated when over-wide tables are used without thinking. In the case you've brought to attention, I think the tables should be split so that the candidates data is arranged conventionally in a series of rows and columns, such as
    Election results[1]
Year Office Election Candidate Party Votes %
2012 U.S. House of Representatives General Dave Joyce Republican 183,660 54%
    Dale V. Blanchard Democratic 131,638 38.7%

@Bazza 7 Your compact table looks great. Should I discuss this on the talk page above to suggest a change? Is this a broader issue related to other pages with tables that could be discussed? -- Ooligan (talk) 23:09, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooligan: Thanks: I used source editing; it took a few minutes as it was just a case of rearranging the table row markers and making sure the column spans were adjusted. You could [[WP:BOLD|be bold]] and make your improvements regardless. If [[WP:BRD|someone disagrees and reverts your change, then that's the time to discuss]], and you could refer to this conversation in the process. Alternatively, I can do the changes, but it won't be for a while.
(I have amended the table above to remove the "hide" option, which seems pointless to include.) Bazza (talk) 09:10, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7 No rush, but could you do the change when you have time. Again, your table is looks great. Thank you for your idea. -- Ooligan (talk) 09:28, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Direct Page Creation

I have had an AFC submission declined in the past for reasons I understand, and were beyond my control. Recently I wrote a page, which is currently at Draft:Creation of a Programming Language, however, it got moved to the draftspace, for what seems to be a little bit of uncited statements, and mostly similar sources. I have added more sources, removed anything I couldn't find citations for, and added wider varieties of sources, so now I'm nearly confident if I was in a reviewers shoes, I would accept the page. However, AFC does take quite some time. So my actual question is, after this submission is reviewed, am I allowed to use my own judgement of whether or not it would be appropriate to move an article I wrote back to the mainspace once I feel the issues have been resolved? Or is it that once an article is moved to the draftspace it must be moved back via AFC? Spacebyte (talk) 00:19, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Spacebyte I am the editor who draftified your article. I did so because it is essay-like and contains information found in other articles, such as dynamic typing, object oriented programming, and low-level language. I would probably recommend merging the content into those respective articles. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 00:42, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I don't agree entirely though. I might consider changing that section to focus on broader topics then? Spacebyte (talk) 00:49, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Another update. I have removed those topics as they too broad for such a specific topic, and the more I think about it the more you seem correct that, that section makes it seem like an essay. I have replaced it with a more useful section, and will move it to the mainspace. If it gets moved back to the draft space I will modify it and then wait out an AFC submission. Spacebyte (talk) 00:59, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Spacebyte (ec).AFC is voluntary(unless you are a new user, IP user, or have a COI). It's a good idea to use it unless you have experience in creating articles, but it's not required. If it was moved to draft space, it's not required to be submitted, but you should make sure to hear the concerns of the user who draft-ifyed it. Are you on a deadline? Wikipedia has no deadlines. 331dot (talk) 00:46, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Spacebyte, I see that you now have moved this to mainspace. However the topic is already covered in much more depth at Programming language#Design and implementation and its subpages, Programming language specification and Programming language implementation. There is a case for a standalone alone article, though with a less how-to like title. Your lead paragraph is not correct - languages are not created by creating a compiler or an interpreter. The specification of the language has to be done first, and you have left that out. Also, your first reference is a link to a copyrighted book posted online as a copyright violation - please change that to a reference to the book without that illegal link. Find sources that are not blogs or student papers. StarryGrandma (talk) 04:48, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Alright. I’ll work on it. Spacebyte (talk) 05:26, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove my edit

David Livingstone was a huge fan of dunking Oreo cookies in milk. However, it wasn't just any milk. Livingstone's dairy beverage of choice was soy milk, which, to be honest, is absolutely detestable. Henry Stanley once told his dear friend, "Good sir! I do believe that you have gone quite mad! Soy milk is nothing more than the tears of vegans dyed to an odd shade of beige. Quite frankly, I am ashamed of you! As is your mother too! Good day, Dr. Livingstone. May God have mercy on your poor soul!" David soon went into a deep depression. He began dunking dozens, no hundreds, of single stuffed Oreo cookies into his sad excuse for a beverage. (You could tell he was depressed because he was only eating single stuff Oreos, and not double stuff like a real man.) One day, his wife burst into the room and exclaimed, "David! I am fed up with your drinking problem!" (by which she meant his drinking of soy milk) "I am leaving you and I am taking the kids with me!" To which David responded, "But dear wife, we don't have any children." "Oh," was her solemn response. "You are indeed correct Davie, you have outsmarted my outsmarting. I apologize." But David paid her no attention, for he was too busy dunking one Oreo after another into his depressing white liquid. He has lost all sense of reality. All he wanted was to sit in his tiny African hut and eat Oreos. The moral of the story is this, don't drink soy milk. It tastes like feet.<ref> 69.85.242.5 (talk) 04:21, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello English-language Wikipedians. I would like advice on how to proceed with a concern over probable sexual objectification in the article List of Japanese gravure idols. A gravure idol is a female model who primarily models for magazines. A sub-set of the article’s list of models is those who are bakunyū, literally “enormous breasts”, and a genre of pornographic media focusing on the depiction of women with large breasts. In the list article, the bra cup size for each bakunyū model is shown, e.g. F-cup.

I think it is reasonable for the list article to exist, and for bakunyū models to be identified, since both gravure and bakunyū are notable media genres in Japan. My question is whether cup size should be shown. To me this is clear sexual objectification.

Can others share their opinions, and point me at relevant WP guidelines or discussion areas? I have not raised this question (yet) on the article’s Talk page, since I suspect many of those who have a close interest in the subject may not be impartial. Thanks. Masato.harada The best place to have this discussion is at Talk:List of Japanese gravure idols. 331dot (talk) 09:45, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed with 331dot. I've had a quick glance at the list, and taking it along with your explanation above it seems reasonable. Like it or not, these models are notable for "enormous breasts", the cup size gives a measure of that, and is therefore relevant. Were they notable for their faces, character or acting ability then I would agree with you. I presume that they are happy to be publicly known as bakunyū and therefore reporting facts seems acceptable. Whether this is desirable is a question for Japanese society, not WP. All IMHO of course.
