Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences

Although not a university, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has many links with Dutch universities; its mission is to be the forum, conscience and representative of Dutch science.

Universities of Applied Sciences

This institution of tertiary education in the Netherlands is called the hogeschool. While the literal translation is "high school," these entities are actually equal to universities of applied sciences. They can also be compared with colleges, polytechnics, and universities of applied arts. Hogescholen are not allowed to be called universiteit in the Dutch language, and they are not allowed to confer doctorates (PhD degrees). In international contexts, the phrase University of Applied Sciences is to be used for the majority of these schools, as suggested by the Dutch Minister of Education in early 2008. [3] Although this name will be adopted for the vast majority of Hogescholen, some specific exceptions have been made--for example, (tertiary) Art Schools and Schools of Education. These schools may be allowed to use an internationally recognisable name of choice.

Hogescholen are vocational universities in that their focus is towards professional education rather than scientific research. Their education schemes, however, do include the awarding of Bachelor's, Master's and, prior to the Bologna Process, Engineer's degrees.
