Comanche County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 14,026. Comanche is named for the Comanche Native American tribe. The seat of the county is ComancheTemplate:GR.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 948 square miles (2,454 km²), of which, 938 square miles (2,429 km²) of it is land and 10 square miles (25 km²) of it (1.05%) is water.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 14,026 people, 5,522 households, and 3,926 families residing in the county. The population density was 15 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 7,105 housing units at an average density of 8 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 87.30% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 9.70% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 20.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,522 households out of which 29.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% were married couples living together, 8.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% were non-families. 26.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the county, the population was spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 20.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $28,422, and the median income for a family was $34,810. Males had a median income of $26,094 versus $18,912 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,677. About 13.90% of families and 17.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.60% of those under age 18 and 16.00% of those age 65 or over.

Local media

Comanche County is part of the Abilene Television media market in West Central Texas. Local News media outlets are: KRBC-TV, KTXS-TV, KXVA, KTAB-TV, and KIDU-LP. Although they are provided satellite television services, residents of Comanche County are only allowed to view the Dallas/Fort Worth market stations, forcing some area residents to use television antennas to get local news and information. In the cities of Comanche and De Leon, Cable Television continues to offer some but not all of the Abilene market stations. Residents using television antennas in Comanche County along the U.S. Route 377/U.S. Route 67 corridor and points to the south mostly view the Waco/Temple/Killeen market stations for local news and information. These channels include: KCEN-TV, KWTX-TV, KXXV-TV, KWBU-TV, KWKT-TV, and KNCT-TV. Comanche County sits almost centrally between the Abilene DMA and the Waco/Temple/Killeen DMA.
