Sorry to bother you, but since you edited the article Russians in Ukraine, I was wondering if you have an opinion on the serious violation of the WP:POINT there[1]. I'd like to hear your opinion about it before I file it on the ANB. Thanks in advance. --Hillock65 18:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Violations need to be addressed. If there are reasonable issues then an intervention should be undertaken, however it should not be done for revanchist reasons.--Riurik(discuss) 02:12, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ukrainian Village

Even though the article is stubby, I think each item in List of Chicago Landmarks should have its own page instead of section redirects. Tomorrow, I will be nominating this list for WP:FLC. I am going to revert to stub. TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 00:54, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I closed the merger discussion on the talk page. See closing at Talk:Ukrainian Village, Chicago. TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 01:09, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I disagree, but won't insist on this further as the two are interlinked regardless. Good luck with the FLC.--Riurik(discuss) 03:26, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shche ne vmerla Ukraina lyrics

Ok, that's what you meant. I was right about the zazhivyemo thing right?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Griffon2-6 (talkcontribs)

Glad that we came to an agreement. I don't know whether it is zapanuyem or zazhyvemo (in the pre-2003) version. The English wiki says zazhyvemo under pre-2003. The UKR wiki says zapanuyem in all three versions. So I was wondering about your source for the pre-2003 version. Do you have a ref we can cite?--Riurik(discuss) 03:19, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can read cyrillic. All I was doing was transliterating it from the cyrillic. Check on nationalanthems.us if you want to be sure. Griffon2-6 20:42, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Griffon2-6[reply]

I bet you thought I had forgotten! Wow, what a long article; but it's not even in the top 1000 Long pages, so it could be worse. Regardless of its length, it is a very well written article indeed and could be a strong FA candidate, I believe, with a few improvements. As you probably know, the references need to be increased in some sections, including Immediate Crisis Management and Causes. The Grass and forest fires sub-section has a group of embedded URLs that need to be changed to footnotes. It looks very difficult to trim the length, as it does not have anything that is not essential or at least very worthwhile, and because of this, the Effects of disaster section would probably have to be the main target, since it has a full article. I'm not sure how much could actually be removed from this section without leaving it incomplete, so it may even require restriction to a See also link. If that doesn't work, then the length will probably have to remain unchanged. As WP:SIZE says, length has to be judged on a case-by-case basis, because there are circumstances in which an article has to be very long. There are no rules about this, as such. My advice would be to put it through an FA candidate review and see if the length is among the issues raised. You may well be able to justify it. Adrian M. H. 18:37, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adrian, thanks a lot for the comments; fully within a reasonable response time frame.--Riurik(discuss) 03:47, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Chernobyl article is very compellingly written. I read it after watching a YouTube video, [Inside Chernobyl], of guys exploring the sarcophagus. The video and the article are clear enough to give nightmares. I adjusted the wording around the 40-second diesel generator startup. I hope you find that the result is slightly clearer, without changing the meaning. Brianhill 04:03, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Template:USPresidents

My edits were not vandalism, GHW Bush and Cheney were both Acting Presidents under Regan and GW Bush, respectively. These are not individual templates for separate terms, if you had actually read it properly and clicked the respectively links (it's why they're there) you would have found this out. Therequiembellishere 01:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I did look around the template's talk page and finding no discussion of the "interim" label concluded that it was a joke - not so it appears. So Cheney was U.S. president (if only acting) afterall.--Riurik(discuss) 04:43, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. I am glad to hear that you are also contributing to the material about Lviv. Perhaps one day the entry on En wiki will improve enough in quality to match its FA counterpart at Ru wiki. Pleasantries aside, allow me to note that contrary to your assertion, I am not participating in the RfC on your behavior. My sole involvement has been as a short comment on an "outside view" offered by user Alaexis. As can be seen here that comment has nothing to do with the matter of the RfC in question, and instead deals with the issue of references. As for Dukhnovych's place in the Ukrainian historical heritage, please see the entry below:
"Oleksandr Dukhnovych (1803-1865) was a Ukrainian Transcarpathian writer and cultural figure. A poet, playwright and essayist, he also recorded Ukrainian folk-songs." (from Pivovarov, N. "Dukhnovych, Oleksandr Vasil'ovych." Modern Encyclopedia of Russian and Soviet Literature. Ed. by Harry B. Weber. Gulf Breeze, FL.: Academic International Press. 6 (1982): 91. as cited in Tarnawsky's ULE book. Regards, --Riurik(discuss) 01:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, on those occasions when English references are unavailable, I utilize an alternative source in other languages. I think that this is a commonsense policy. This, however, does not negate the fact that English language references are much superior and prefered to non-English references - at least for usage on en.wiki. That was and remains my position on the issue.--Riurik(discuss) 20:15, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request to move Kyiv

Hello,

I have set up a request to move the page Kiev to Kyiv.

I have outlined four key reasons for doing so in the discussion section of the page.

Looking through the archives, I saw that you had contributed to this page earlier. I would like to hear what you have to say on this topic.

Thank you

Misunderstanding

This edit was a misunderstanding. "Rewrite the above version" meant only that I was rewriting the above version. It wasn't a command that you should rewrite. The purpose of my rewrite was only to improve the English and the wikilink, not to dispute the facts about the gulag. Art LaPella 21:00, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You earned it. Yes, you can do one, or as many as you like. Now how do you go about doing it: for starters, take a look at WP:Awards, which has a neat selection of standard awards ranging from the Classic Barnstar to more specialized awards usually centered around WikiProjects. These are easy to use, since all you have to do is type the subst : name of the award | message of the award and don't forget to enclose with double brackets "{{ }}". Alternatively, you can make your own awards by framing or thumbing images found here. Edit counters are available here.--Riurik(discuss) 04:57, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FC Dynamo Kyiv

[2] and [3] shows exactly what I was talking about.

Sigh. With such help, I am not sure we could pull it off. --Irpen 21:29, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We can't avoid these. People will say what they want, but unless the comments are on the issue at hand, they need not apply. Once the RfC is started, the purpose will be explicitly stated upfront: to address the usage of "Kyiv" in organizations and FC clubs; the discussion will not apply to the city as there is a strong consensus on there already.--Riurik(discuss) 22:42, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, try to say this "strong consensus" in the discussion where the well-known "conscious" users are likely to take part. --Irpen 22:49, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hi riurik

i've left a rather sarky msg (sorry!) about the 7 wonders of ukraine article in the discussion board.

you might care to correct the order, given that the officical site it links to clearly proves the wikipedia article has things the wrong way around.

sorry too much on my plate to join the wikipedia community, but as i'm a journo writing on ukraine, and including the seven wonders it would be nice not to have inaccuracies on wikipedia contradicting what i'm going to write! :-)

I'm totally for it. It'll have to wait to let older entries featured, but around 22/23 one of the editors (possibly myself) will move it for "next update". Heck of a job there.--Riurik(discuss) 03:54, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. By the way, if V. Rechmedin article was too short, and say I expand it...tomorrow, could we still re-nominated it? I must admit, I'm rather fond of this man and I'd like the article to at least make DYK. Regards, Bogdan що? 04:01, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and added a paragraph which places it just over the threshold. I was also bold and moved it for next update, given that it will become ineligible very quickly. I made that clear when "updating" the template. Should that arise as an issue, and my "boldness" gets the entry placed back to the suggestion area, you may have to update it tomorrow yourself.--Riurik(discuss) 04:05, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for helping editing Valentyn Rechmedin. I will probably also write about his brother Leonid who also was a journalist, reporting from both Stalingrad and Berlin during the war, and later worked as a high rank bureaucrat in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. I just need more references. Then I also plan to rewrite the article about Plyskiv (that now only focus on the Jewish settlement there, in fact now it looks like there were only Jewish living there even though about 2/3 were Ukrainians in the mid 1800s) and I will continue to add more pictures (besides my recent ones and old postcards I also have many unique German pictures from the 1940s). By the way Plyskiv is a містечко and not a village. How would you translate it? Township? Narking (talk) 22:03, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to help. As long as the new articles get announced on the portal, someone can always help (dyk or otherwise). As far as Plyskiv. Township may be one, and I would say, an accurate version to translate Містечко, however it can be translated in many ways. Take a look at this article: Administrative_divisions_of_Ukraine#General_scheme_of_administrative_subdivision. As far as population, is 1500 people large enough for a settlement to be described as a Town or is it just a big Village? I don't know the answer, but you could try to make the argument that Plyskiv is a mistechko/town and let the reader judge based on the population number.--Riurik(discuss) 00:20, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From CD/NCST

I hope that little misunderstanding between us is in past now. Generally I like the proposal, and "Did you noticed that? It should be reverted, right?" means only that you were too fast to change the policy (I thought that discussion was open). I'm sorry.   Jhony  |  Talk   09:44, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it is in the past, and such things are to be expected when the only mode of communication is writing. I can honestly say that when I "closed" the discussion, it seemed that it was dying out, and no one objected to the proposal as a whole. My interpretation of your statement was more on the "bad faith" side, so I'll trade an apology with you. See you around.--Riurik(discuss) 07:05, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you trying to tell me too cool down and that I might get annoying? Or that the people who see the use of Ukrainian names as irratable are wrong and should be opposed? Thanks in advance! PS trough my Ukrainian friends from the south and Kiev I'm getting to understand Ukraine better slowley... Mariah-Yulia (talk) 21:28, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't think you "heated up" enough in the first place for me to say "cool down". My purpose was to point out the fact that what is irritable is subjective. I agree that proper names should be used; the problem is establishing what these are. In the case of Kunis, the initial starting point of her being of Ukrainian heritage, therefore the patronimic must be -ivna, turned out to be incorrect after you did some research about her, and Kunis appears to be clueless about that part of the world. Glad to hear about the progress made in understanding Ukraine; it's one of those things that never stops.--Riurik(discuss) 21:46, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Allow me

I hereby award you the both halves of the, so called "Half Barnstar" whose name should not mislead anyone into being anything but a full award. This is "for your excellence in Cooperation, especially for productive editing together with someone who holds diametrically opposed or simply different viewpoints". There are too many articles to name (or even remember) where you displayed such attitude and I would rather just state the obvious and give you this well-deserved award. Keep up the good work! --Irpen 08:06, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re:any advice?

Hi, Riurik, sorry for delay in responce.. I see that the image that was uploaded by the user is now deleted due to lack of licence information. If you want to re-upload the other image from the Presidential website, just use it under the fairuse licence with a non-free image rationale, because the president.gov.ua site now says "All rights reserved." which does not make it under the {{PD-UA-exempt}} licence.
I am on spring break right now, so I'll have much more time available for wiki, I'll start cleaning up the image problems with PD-UA-exempt soon. PS, would you care to help out with a draft I started of the Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle? Cheers, —dima/talk/ 20:34, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Thanks for getting back to me on this. I'll reupload another image as you suggest under the fairuse license, and drop by the Castle article as well.--Riurik(discuss) 17:08, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Holodomor lead picture

Any better idea that the boy currently in? My concern is that, as most of those photos were proven to be, this may be the 1920s image from the Nansen commission as well. I would also prefer to not have grisly pictures at all, if possible, just to preserve the article's readership. Malevich's painting is a possibility, while it is too allegoric and this is just one of the several interpretations. But I don't have any better ideas now. --Irpen 03:07, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It would be good to find a historical photograph from the time with more than one person in it for the lead. Malevich is good, but I don't think that should be the lead visual mostly because it is a painting. On the nature of grisly, we probably disagree. I don't see how an article on this subject can avoid grisly pictures, and I don't think that having such material will compromise readership on the subject. Having said that, these don't have to be the only pictures. For the lead, what about these: Image:Holodomor1.jpg (probably not) or Image:Holodomor - Harkivska oblast.jpg (a maybe). The second seems more appropriate, than the first. Aren't there other sources where we can dip for image documentation?--Riurik(discuss) 04:17, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On grisly pictures, I can't accept them sorry. I don't run Wikipedia, of course, and I have to abide with what would otherwise be a consensus, but I consistently opposed the grisly picture irrespective of the POV, be it the tortured Kosmodemyanskaya in her article, murdered Polish children or this article.
The second picture you propose is not expressive enough for the lead, it is simply generic. This child's eyes relay the feeling no less than the image of a dead person. Maybe Joe will be nice enough to comment on that without outbursts. He has access to many pictures. Currently, I have no formed opinion except the generic image is no good and the grisly image is out of question. We can leave it as is for now. I am just thinking out loud. --Irpen 05:24, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Just to clarify my position, I don't think a grisly image should be the lead picture, but I do think that grisly images if they are related to the topic, are acceptable in the main text.--Riurik(discuss) 17:39, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please join me and Faustian at his talk. Front ideas

Hello. I recently mused on the possibility of expanding our coverage of the late Soviet period in the various republics (at least the ones where something interesting was happening), and I notice Ukraine is rather poorly covered. History of Ukraine has only a couple of paragraphs on the topic, while the article on Rukh has just one. We have articles on the 1990 elections (not bad), the declaration of sovereignty, the declaration of independence (OK) and the independence referendum. However, we can do more with the 1987-91 period. I'm not proposing anything concrete (the area isn't a specialty of mine, but I can contribute something), just putting out some ideas. We should definitely expand on the articles we have, especially Rukh. Once that's done, we might consider having an article tying it all together - "Late Soviet Ukraine", "Independence of Ukraine", something like that. Anyway, let me know what you think. Biruitorul (talk) 19:26, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I like the idea. I've been thinking of what specific areas on Wikipedia concerning Ukrainian issues can use more attention (there are so many), and I think this is a good topic. I announced it here, and will place it on my user front page, but may not be able to contribute much right away.--Riurik(discuss) 04:33, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine, as long as we get something underway eventually. And you're right - each country still has a lot of work to be done. Just recently I was looking at Roman Catholicism in Ukraine - big work to be done there, and while we have a pretty good article on Protestants in Ukraine, I don't believe we have anything on Mormons there, which we should, given that the first Mormon temple in Eastern Europe will soon open in Kiev. Anyway, Ukraine is lucky to have a group of dedicated editors and I'm confident there will be improvement: it's the more neglected countries (much of ex-Yugoslavia, for instance, or Moldova (which we Romanians try to handle as best we can)) one should feel sorry for. Biruitorul (talk) 16:36, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the weakness of wikipedia. It is biased toward people with internet access, which in in turn defines what gets covered. As a result, we have entries at FA level on 0.999..., but lack quality coverage of modern day states.--Riurik(discuss) 18:15, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Morozov.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Morozov.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 14:18, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Self promotion?

Hi. Im curious as to what you meant when you deleted an external link I added to the Holodomor page, saying it was "self promotion". First, I don't work for Russia Today and can't even imagine why you would think so. Second, the link is in complete compliance with WP:NPOV and WP:External links. Please explain why you feel a well known Russian historians views, which are very much relevant to the subject matter, should be censored from wikipedia. Krawndawg (talk) 23:45, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was not trying to imply that you worked for any organization, but external links are quite often used for promotion purposes. Regardless, a plausible argument can be made that this specific linking is intended to promote RT, so in that sense it is imaginable.
Now about the issue, the link is not in compliance with wikipedia's NPOV policy, as it represents the view of that particular organization (see its youtube description page). It is also not in compliance with external links policy, b/c it does not add unique resource beyond what is already provided in the article.--Riurik(discuss) 20:13, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Purging external links and unused "references"

Speaking of which, the external links sections has a lot of unscholarly crap. What do you think of purging it? We can put it in a dedicated talk page archive if someone would feel their important links are wasted. What do you say? --Irpen 03:07, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I won't "archive" though; it's not about hurt feelings, and the topic does not lack coverage, plus it's already archived in history.--Riurik(discuss) 20:13, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will take care of this when I have time. Right now, I am busy with administrative units of Imperial Russia in the territories of Ukraine someone started all at once. Maybe you could help, if you have time, with those too? No pressure though. --Irpen 20:18, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've started the purging process, and there seem to be lots of deadlinks and plain promo sites (local organizations devoted to the cause of promoting awareness about the holodomor - which is fine, but that do not add anything of substance to the article). Are you talking about the governorate articles?--Riurik(discuss) 20:21, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Governorates as well as the Goverotate General (Southwestern Krai).
Good job with purging refs. "Famine-Genocide" and "art-Ukraine" links should preferably all go, unless they host the article by a scholar. In that case we should best find the same scholarly work at the acceptable site. I was able to most of the time. --Irpen 20:27, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, hope all is well. Just a quick question, could you or someone else please check these two articles (spelling, wiki, etc.). In fact, there is also a third one Where Has Love Gone?, but it still requires a major expansion. I am trying to make them good, and who knows, may be featured on wiki as such. In fact, as you have probably mentioned I am interested basicly in all what is related to Sofia Rotaru, and since her artistic creation is rather inetrnational, although very much related to Ukraine as well, I thought you could give it some attention. As for Chervona Ruta (film), what would be good - to add an extensive Plot desription section. Thank you in advance--Rubikonchik (talk) 20:03, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload images to Wikipedia Commons from a website of the Government of Ukraine? They are photos (1 colour, 3 b&w) of protests in Kyiv from July 1990 - August 1991. They are posted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Jwkozak91 (talk) 03:16, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, jumping in on this one, Riurik! Jwkozak91, I would rather not try, because it appears that we cannot use the {{UA-PD-exempt}} template for Ukrainian-government published images and lots of Copyright paranoia freaks are on there.. If you need that photo you could pull it off under the Fair Use guidelines as I doubt a reasonable replacement photograph can be found. Hope that helps, ddima.talk 05:12, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
