WTWC-TV is the NBC affiliate station for Tallahassee, Florida, owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.

The station was started on April 21, 1983 by Guy Gannett Communications. Before WTWC signed on, Albany's WALB was the NBC affiliate of choice in the Tallahassee area. Sinclair bought the station, along with most of Guy Gannett's other television properties, in 1998.

The station currently runs no full-length newscast; it had produced one 1987 to 1988 and again from 1997 until 2000. The latter newscast was canceled due to poor ratings and budget cuts. The original 1987 newscast was called News 40, while the 1997 newscast was branded NBC News 40. For the next 6 years, WTWC only ran news briefs at 7:27 a.m., 8:26 a.m. (during NBC's Today Show), 5:58 p.m. and 6:28 p.m. These were produced in conjunction with Tallahassee's ABC affiliate WTXL-TV, which was operated by Sinclair as a result of an outsourcing agreement made by Media Ventures Management and inherited by Calkins Media. These newsbriefs ended February 20, 2006, when both stations parted ways with each other after Media Ventures sold WTXL. [1]

On December 22, 2006, WTWC renewed its affiliation agreement with NBC, keeping the station affiliated with the network through the end of 2016. [2]

Post-analog shutdown

After the analog television shutdown scheduled for June 12, 2009 [1], WTWC-TV moved back to channel 40.

Current personalities

Since February 2009, WTWC has utilized the weather team from sister station WEAR-TV in Pensacola for morning weather forecasts during The Today Show tailored to the Tallahassee viewing area. These forecasters include WEAR chief meteorologist Allen Strum and weekend forecasters Jim Carmack and Kathryn Daniel.
