Nickelodeon is a soon-to-be-launched Canadian English language category 2 digital cable specialty channel based on the U.S. cable network Nickelodeon. It is scheduled to launch on November 2, 2009,[1] and will be owned by Corus Entertainment, in partnership with MTV Networks International, a division of Viacom. It is not clear at this time whether Viacom will be a part-owner of the channel or simply a licensor.
As with its counterparts in the U.S. and elsewhere, the new channel is expected to air programs aimed at children, including live-action series and animation. Corus already owns two similar channels, YTV and Treehouse TV, which have carried Nickelodeon programs for many years under output agreements with Viacom. Both channels will still continue to air Nickelodeon programs in the future, despite the launch Nickelodeon Canada.
This marks the second Viacom-branded channel to be owned by Corus; the companies also partner on CMT Canada.
The channel will launch using the "YTV OneWorld"[2][1] licence, granted to Corus by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in September 2008.
