The Jaipur Metro rail ground level work will begin in March 2010, and will be readied by March 2013. This project is led by DMRC GM E Sridharan.

Jaipur Metro project is getting more strength. With a positive node,DMRC finally decided about 30 km Metro rail for Jaipur which include dense populated area of Jaipur. DMRC notified Four Main route for Metro Project in Jaipur.

The metro rail would run through various areas like Ramganj, Chhoti Chaupar, Badi Chaupar, Maharani Ki Chatri and Jal Mahal. These areas would be linked with Mansarovar, Gujjar Ki Thadi, Shyam Nagar, Jacob Road, Railway Station, Sindhi Camp Bus Station, Sanganer, SMS Stadium, Nehru Place, Bajaj Nagar, Malviya Nagar and Airport. The proposed route will be a 9-km long elevated track connecting Mansarovar and Chandpole. This will be part of 12 km long East West corridor from Ramganj to Mansarovar via Badi Choupar, Choti Choupar, Chandpole, Ajmer Road, Gopalpura Bypass, New Sanganer Road and Mansarovar. The first metro route from Jawahar Circle to Bajaj Nagar, Tonk Road and MI Road will end at the Sindhi Camp bus stand. The second route will be from Mansarovar to New Sanganer Road, Ajmer Road, Sodala and the railway station. The Sindhi Camp bus stand will be the meeting point of the two routes. However, the underground metro route from MI Road, Sindhi Camp and Panipech “will remain as it is.” The government has given its consent to the final module. Soon the project will be sent for cabinet clearance following which it will be sent to the Centre for funds. In the first phase, 28.5 km-long Metro corridor will be constructed at a cost of Rs 5,300 crore, including 12 km east west corridor and 16.5 km long North South corridor from the Jawahar Circle to Jal Mahal.Of the total 28.5 km proposed route, only 6.5 km will pass through the Walled City area and in order to maintain the heritage look of the old city, the entire stretch will be constructed underground. Outside the Walled City area, the Metro will mainly run on elevated road. The government has nearly finalised the project.

North South corridor includes 13 km elevated and 3.5 km underground route from Jawahar Circle to Jal Mahal.

DMRC to submit DPR by November 2009, ground work expected to begin by March 2010 .

Jaipur Metro Corporation to be constituted for management of Metro Rail Services in city.

THE TWO ROUTES

1. Ramganj to Mansarovar passing through Badi Choupar, Choti Choupar, Chandpole, Ajmer Road, Gopalpura Bypass and New Sanganer Road. This corridor will be similar to the one proposed earlier. A nine-km elevated track connecting Chandpole to Mansarovar be the first to be completed.

2.the North-South corridor earlier proposed between Jawahar Circle and Jal Mahal has been changed. As per the new plan, the corridor will connect Sanganer to Panipech. An elevated track will start from Sanganer, passing through Durgapura, B-2 bypass, reaching JLN Marg and then Bajaj Nagar. From here it will take a turn to reach Tonk Road. It will reach Ajmeri Gate and will shift to underground tunnel to reach Sindhi Camp and then cross Bani Park. From there it will once again shift to elevated tracks to reach Panipech.

Sindhi Camp will be the major point of intersection for the both the corridors and will have two stations. The EW corridor arriving from Mansarovar will run underground from Sindhi Camp to Ramganj.

The underground metro is being envisaged to run nearly 60 feet under the surface and to develop each kilometer, the estimated cost is Rs 370 to 450 crore. In the proposed format, the metro will run nearly five kilometers underground while the remaining will be on elevated tracks. The construction cost of elevated tracks will be around Rs 125 crore to 150 crore per kilometer.

"The changes are made in accordance with the needs of the people and avoiding any disturbance to the existing infrastructure. The proposed format is expected to remain the final design. However, as the detailed project report (DPR) is yet to arrive, some minute changes can be accepted accordingly," said a senior official.

Despite the changes, the government is optimistic that the first metro operations will commence in the city by the end of 2013, while the work is expected to commence by March 2010.
