The 2010 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 3 or the 2010 IPL, is the third season of the Indian Premier League, established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. The tournament is being hosted by India and is scheduled to be played between March 12 and April 25, 2010. It is forecasted to have an estimated television audience of more than 200 million people in India.[1] It will be the first ever cricket tournament which will be broadcast live on YouTube.[2] The whole tournament is also being shown on ITV4 in the United Kingdom. The final four Matches of IPL 3 will be screened in 3D across Movie halls in India.[3]
New venues
Five new venues have been introduced for the third edition of IPL.[4] Nagpur, Cuttack, Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Dharamsala are the new venues. Nagpur, Cuttack, and Navi Mumbai amongst them will host the home games for Deccan Chargers, and Ahmedabad and Dharamsala will share some of the home matches of Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab respectively. Additionally, Hyderabad, which hosted all Deccan's home games in 2008, will not host any games. This has been attributed to the possibility of unrest due to the possibility of a Telengana state succession.
The 60-game tournament will feature a third-place playoff between the losing semi-finalists as a qualifier for the Champions League and also sees the induction of ICL players.[4] Both semi-finals will be held in Bangalore. The final and the third place playoff game would be played at Navi Mumbai and the season will end five days before the World Twenty20 opens in West Indies.[4]

Terror concerns
A number of players, particularly from Australia and England, have offered concerns raised by a report into security at the event. But, on a series of Twitter messages, the IPL commissioner insisted the government has already given ample assurances for safe conduct of games. The independent report, written by British security expert Reg Dickason, raised "serious" concerns about safety at the IPL, according to the head of the Australian Cricketers' Association, Paul Marsh.[5]
The threat of mass withdrawals from the Indian Premier League seems to have been allayed after organizers gave new commitments over security. Players' unions have received assurances that the IPL security plan will be implemented at each venue. This follows the assessment on February 2010 that a reported threat from an Al-Qaeda cell was "not credible". Security fears reached a peak when Asia Times online published a message reportedly from the 313 Brigade, an operational arm of Al-Qaeda, that threatened the IPL, Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup. This followed a threat against Australian players competing in the IPL from the right-wing Hindu group Shiv Sena.[6]
Former cricketers Sir Ian Botham, Brian Lara, Steve Waugh and Shaun Pollock have urged the current generation not to give in to terrorism by opting out of the Indian Premier League (IPL).[7]

Player Auction
The 2010 Player Auction for Indian Premier League was held on 19 January 2010 in Mumbai. 97 players from cricket playing countries other than India registered for the auction, although that did not guarantee the player would be included in the auction list. The IPL sent the list of 97 names to the franchises who selected the players they would like included in the auction. The selected players were informed of their inclusion by January 5.
The original list of 97 players was pared down to 96 after Chris Cairns' name was removed; the current list comprises players whom the franchises have specifically selected for the auction.
Chris Cairns, a former New Zealand international, was controversially omitted earlier in the week by IPL boss Lalit Modi amid comments alleging the former Black Cap's suspension from the rebel Indian Cricket League was due to match-fixing. Cairns has vehemently denied the references and is considering legal action.
A total number of 66 overseas players were included in the final auction list.[8] West Indian all rounder Kieron Pollard and New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond were the highest bid players in the auction who were bought for $750,000 but not before their prices went in the silent tie breaker round. Kieron Pollard was bought by Mumbai Indians and Shane Bond by Kolkata Knight Riders. However, in the most surprising development, not a single Pakistan player was signed up by any of the franchises.
51 of the players registered for the player auction were shortlisted. Controversially all of England's players were omitted. According to Lalit Modi, this is because of "new conditions imposed by the ECB". Nine English players will feature in the IPL auction on January 19 after league officials said a dispute over NOCs had been resolved. This takes to 60 the number of players who will be involved in the auction.
The auction list features players from Australia (11), South Africa (9), Sri Lanka (8), West Indies (8), Pakistan (7), New Zealand (4) and one each from Bangladesh, Canada, Holland and Zimbabwe.[9]

- In the tiebreakers, Kolkata Knight Riders bid $1,300,000 for Shane Bond and Mumbai Indians bid $2,750,000 for Kieron Pollard. The players' take was capped at $750,000 each by the IPL auction rules, with the rest going to IPL kitty.[10]
Rules and regulations
The rules and format are the same as previous season with the exception of the strategic timeout. Each innings has two mandatory timeouts of two-and-a-half minutes each. The fielding captain must elect to take one at the end of over six, seven, eight or nine, and the batsmen at the end of over 13, 14, 15 or 16.[11] Points in the group stage were awarded as follows:
Results | Points |
---|---|
Win | 2 points |
No Result | 1 point |
Loss | 0 points |
If the match ends with the scores tied, the tie is broken with a one-over-per-side Super Over.[12] The rules of the Super Over are as set out in the ICC Standard Twenty20 International Match Playing Conditions (October 1 2009 version).[13]
- Team with most runs wins
- If equal, the team with most number of boundary sixes throughout the entire match wins
- If still equal, the team with most number of boundaries throughout the entire match wins
- If still equal, the team taking the most wickets throughout the entire match wins
- If still equal, a count-back from the final ball of the Super Over eliminator shall be conducted. The team with the higher scoring delivery shall be the winner.
- If still equal, by coin toss.
