Sushant Singh Rajput (born January 21, 1986) is an Indian film and television actor. In 2013, Rajput made his film debut in Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che!, an adaption of Chetan Bhagat's The 3 Mistakes of My Life.[1] Prior to his foray into films, he was an established and hugely successful television actor widely known for the role of Manav Deshmukh in the hit daily soap Pavitra Rishta. Rajput also received accolades for his dancing skills post his participation in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 where he finished second.

Early life and background

Rajput hails from Purnea, Bihar and was born in Patna where his father Mr K.K Singh worked as a government official. His family moved to New Delhi in early 2000s and have been based there ever since. Rajput has 4 sisters with him being the youngest sibling of the family. One of his sisters, Mitu Singh is a state-level cricketer.[2] He did his schooling from St. Karen's High School in Patna and Kulachi Hansraj Model School in New Delhi. Rajput appeared in All India Engineering Entrance Examination 2003 and secured All India Rank 7. He took admission in Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi.While in Delhi, Rajput joined choreographer Shiamak Davar's dancing academy and Barry John's theatre classes. After 3 years, he dropped out from his college to move to Mumbai and pursue his passion for performing arts.[3] Rajput,has 4 cousin brother One of his elder brother is a JDU MLA Neeraj kumar singh(Bablu) from Chatapur constituency,Dist-Supaul,Bihar

Career

As a student of Davar, Rajput was chosen to be part of the troupe that went on to perform in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the group of background dancers at the 51st Filmfare Awards. After moving to Mumbai, Rajput danced with Ashley Lobo's troupe, learned martial arts from Allan Amin and assisted Mohit Suri in Raaz 2. He continued his involvement in theatre during this period and was a member of Nadira Babbar's Ekjute theatre group.[4]

Television

In 2008, Rajput was spotted by Balaji Telefilms' casting team in one of his plays and asked to audition. He landed the role of Preet Juneja, the second lead in Star Plus' Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil. His popularity on the show led him to bag the role of Manav Deshmukh in Zee TV's Pavitra Rishta in June 2009. Rajput received much adulation and appreciation for his portrayal of Manav. He went on to win many television awards for the same that year. In May 2010, he joined Star Plus' dance reality show Zara Nachke Dikha 2. His stint in the show, though plagued by injuries and illnesses, drew attention to his dancing abilities and added to his popularity. In December 2010, he participated in another dance-based reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 where he was paired with choreographer Shampa Sonthalia and his efforts in the display of many dance forms won him the award of Most Consistent Performer.[5] Though he was already a hugely known name, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa brought Rajput a considerable amount of attention and appreciation and catapulted him into being one of the most popular faces on television. In October 2011, Rajput decided to quit Pavitra Rishta to pursue a film-making course abroad.[6]

Films

Rajput auditioned for Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che! and bagged the role of one of the three leads. The movie was released on February 22, 2013 and has been a critical and a commercial success.[7] Rajput garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews for his portrayal of Ishaan Bhatt in the movie. Top critic Rajeev Masand noted " But it’s Sushant Singh Rajput, making his film debut as Ishaan, who it’s hard to take your eyes off. The actor has an indescribable presence, and it’s clear from his confidence and distinct likeability that a star is born."[8] Rajput will be next seen in Maneesh Sharma's Shuddh Desi Romance, under the Yash Raj Films banner, and starring opposite Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor.[9] He has also been confirmed for a role in Rajkumar Hirani's next venture titled "P.K." which has Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles.[10]

Personal life

Rajput is engaged to Ankita Lokhande his co-star from Pavitra Rishta.[11]
