Signpost reviews

I was happy to have recently come across the cache of book reviews done for the Signpost a few years ago. From the looks of things the [column?] died off after Einbender. Is that due to lack of reviewers, lack of reader interest, priorities of the Signpost...? Mainly curious but would also be willing to toss my name onto a list of would-be reviewers. --Rhododendrites (talk) 18:34, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Rhododendrites: Thanks for letting me know that you liked the book reviews. That was an area of the Signpost that I tried develop more strongly while I was the editor. I'm sure the current editor, The ed17, would be happy to consider book reviews. Is there something in particular that you're keen to review? (It's often possible to get a review copy sent to you if you contact the publisher.)--ragesoss (talk) 17:01, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Introducing myself for a college course

Hello Mr. Ambassador. My name is Peter Simon Van Gorp, and I am enrolled into a History of Science course at University of Oklahoma with Dr. John A. Stewart. Nice to virtually meet you. Petesimon2 (talk) 02:20, 2 September 2013 (UTC) (signed by me)[reply]

HI

So my assignment for this week was to learn how to use talk pages, and find other wikipedians out there. This thing isn't the easiest to to use, but I guess I'll get use to it. Anyways, how are u related to this course exactly? Meganjeanne1 (talk) 20:26, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Meganjeanne1: Hi there! You're right about talk pages being difficult to use (at first). Improving that is one of the big software projects that Wikipedia's developers are working on. You've got the gist of it now, though. One useful this is that if you link to someone's userpage when you leave a comment, they will get a notification that you mentioned them (like you hopefully will from this message).
My relation to this course is that I know John—we're both historians of science—and I have a lot of experience with Wikipedia, so I offered to help out. Good luck with the class, and if you have any wiki-related questions, let me know.--ragesoss (talk) 22:44, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pseudoscience discussion

Hi,

Its been a while since we chatted but I recently let myself be drawn into an ongoing ArbCom request for clarification and amendment concerning the ArbCom's earlier decisions on Pseudoscience. One element of the resulting discussion concerns the recent insertion of a lengthy, critical template on the talk pages of a large number of articles that are categorized as Pseudoscience. Most of these talk pages concern articles providing historical discussions of, but not advocacy of, specific pseudosciences (see e.g., Talk:Flat Earth; Talk:Astrology). For more on my concerns see my comments to that ArbCom Request.

I see from the archive that you've been involved in ArbCom's past discussion of Pseudoscience. Perhaps you'd be willing to weigh in again. Thanks SteveMcCluskey (talk) 21:15, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@SteveMcCluskey: Thanks for the note, and I'm glad that you're still around these parts! I agree with your basic point that {{ArbComPseudoscience}} is unneccessary on primarily historical articles that don't have a history of bad editing behavior, and it does set a bit of a hostile and intimidating tone for perfectly normal articles, and thus will probably do more harm than good. I don't think it's an ArbCom issue, though, and I doubt they will try to do anything beyond leave their individual opinions as they have started to do. I'll leave a comment on Talk:Flat Earth.--ragesoss (talk) 23:02, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Since Brangifer indicates that he doesn't have time to edit the banner, I've taken a go at it myself. Would you take a look at User:SteveMcCluskey/sandbox2 where I have two draft templates and a discussion. I plan to drop one of them on the talk page of the current template for comment. Would you take a look and see if my discussion makes sense, whether it's likely to be productive, and which (if either) of the banners you prefer. Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:22, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Writing a summary for my article assignment in "History of Science from Antiquity to Newton" (Fall 2013)

I have to write about a 4 paragraph summary of the content I intend to add to my chosen wikipedia article for a college course. The assignment is detailed in this page: Week 7. I have chosen to improve this article: Corpuscular theory of light. Some tentative sources are on the talk page of that article. I have never edited any kind of article, especially online, so do you got any tips for what content and how much to add? Thanks. Petesimon2 (talk) 00:41, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You're being contacted as you're listed as an EdwardsBot user.

MassMessage has been deployed to all Wikimedia wikis. For help using the new tool, please check out its help page or drop a note on Meta-Wiki.

With over 400,000 edits to Wikimedia wikis, EdwardsBot has served us well; however EdwardsBot will no longer perform local or global message delivery after December 31, 2013.

A huge thanks to Legoktm, Reedy, Aaron Schulz and everyone else who helped to get MassMessage deployed. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:37, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Book review for The Signpost

I'm interested in writing a book review for The Signpost before the college Spring Semester starts in January. I'm looking at The Plugged-In Professor: Tips and techniques for teaching with social media by Ferris and Wilder. I'm not opposed to other books already on the list. Any recommendations? Chris Troutman (talk) 05:44, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Chris. The ed17 is currently the editor of the Signpost, so he's the one to work with on the details of doing a book review. I'd certainly be interested to read a review of that one!--ragesoss (talk) 00:33, 20 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nnkapoor and Voxcanis

Ragesoss, I am the TA for Voxcanis. I was just setting up the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nnkapoor (talkcontribs) 21:31, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks User:Nnkapoor! I thought that was probably the case, but wanted to double check. A few quick tips:
  • You should sign your posts to talk page, by adding four tildes (~) at the end. That will automatically add your username and the time of the post.
  • When you start a new thread on someone's talk page, you should create a new section for it. (If you use the "new section" tab, just be sure to include a subject line, which will turn into a header like the one I'm adding now.)
  • It's good practice to keep discussions in one place, and simply ping other participants by linking to their usernames. So for example, on User:Voxcanis's talk page, you could have replied there and added "User:Ragesoss" somewhere in your post, and as long as you signed it (with four tildes), I would get the same type of Notification that you got.

--ragesoss (talk) 21:44, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will work on that. I am still getting used to all of this. Thank you so much for your help. (~) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nnkapoor (talkcontribs) 21:46, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, Nnkapoor. It can be scary at first, all this wiki markup. Four tildes in a row to sign your post (which can be inserted automatically using the little signature icon in the toolbar at the top of the edit window.) You can also indent a post (to create a threaded conversation, with visible breaks between one person's comment and the next) by adding one or more colons to the beginning of the line.--ragesoss (talk) 21:51, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hello! I don't really have much to say, and I'm not trying to bother you, but you are a volunteer for HSCI3013 at OU and part of our first Wikipedia assignment is to talk to someone helping with the class on Wikipedia. They didn't really tell us we were required to say anything in particular, so I hope you have a nice day.Leav5419 (talk) 01:02, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thanks!

Hello, I'm also a student in HSCI3013 at OU. Just created an account on Wikipedia and I'm very thankful to you for offering to help us if needed.

Bonus credit for HSCI 3013

I was thinking of allowing bonus credit for students who either earned barnstars or participated in projects like the Tyop Contest. Do you think this would be a good idea work, or would it be closer to releasing untrained rookie editors to run rough-shod with little guidance? Kirwanfan (talk) 16:03, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kirwanfan: the Tyop Content is a good idea for extra credit. Barnstars don't make an ideal goal for earning bonus points, because it's pretty stochastic; you can do a lot of great work and not get any barnstars, or you could do one little thing that someone notices and get a barnstar for it. (It's also potentially more subject to gaming, although that's a relatively minor issue.) But if you throw in bonus points for barnstars without framing it as a goal to shoot for (rather than a mostly random bit of recognition that sometimes happens), it'd be fine. Another more involved possibility would be extra credit for giving feedback on articles that have been put up for peer review or Good article nominations. Those are cases where other editors are specifically looking for ways the articles can be improved, and just being willing to read through and think about the text with a critical eye goes a long way. (I don't suggest that the students do formal Good article reviews, which have some specific conventions around the details of Wikipedia policy and style guidelines, but rather just post their suggestions for improvement on the article talk pages.)--ragesoss (talk) 16:20, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
