  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best October copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • NEW!! In the week from Sunday 21 October to Saturday 27 October, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} belonging to selected project(s). For the first blitz, we'll start with WikiProject Olympics and WikiProject Albums and add more Projects to the blitz as we clear them. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • November 2012 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in 2011 and to complete all requests placed before the end of October. Request for use of Cuomo photo

You have a great photo of Andrew Cuomo that I just found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Andrew_Cuomo_by_Pat_Arnow_cropped.jpeg I would be very interested to use it in a television ad about Cuomo and fracking. I work for a nonprofit that is doing work to oppose fracking in New York State. Would you be willing to let us use the ad? I think it's a creative commons license but I wanted to be sure. Please respond asap. This is a time sensitive request.

I'm getting a lot of credit for that photo of Cuomo. But it's not mine. I convinced the photographer to release the rights on Flickr so we could have a legitimate photo on Wikipedia. I made some edits and happened to upload it, but I didn't take the photo, therefore you need to talk to Pat Arnow. Kirsten Gillibrand

I would like to discuss this article, and any possible "beef" you may have with Kirsten Gillibrand's promotion, or me. I am aware you are an administrator, and I may very well be stepping on some toes here, so if it ever seems I am being rude, please forgive me, I am never one to mince words

  • As you made your opinion known here, you claim there are still issues with the article such as "spelling, grammar, and clear truncation errors", may I recommend you just fix them, there is no need to go around poo-pooing every non-perfect GA.
  • During our "feud" on the talk page when we discussed the lead, I felt you were being uncompromising, and when I "won" with the arbiter siding with me, you made no comment. And as you said in the GA promotion page "Had I felt it deserved it to be a GA, I would have nominated myself"; I feel I need to remind you that you do not own this article; I took it upon myself to improve the article, and when the time came when I felt it was GA worthy, I nominated it. This in no way makes me the owner either, as you hinted at: "someone else has taking [sic] an ownership role".
  • On an non-Gillibrand subject, I would request that you do not interject yourself in conversations on users talk pages as you did on mine, it was a "private" conversation.

No beef. I'm sorry you've interpreted it that way. I think it's great that you went through the article to clean it up overall. I think we just have different expectations and interpretations of the wiki guidelines, which is fine. I'm from an older guard here and I guess I don't really have the right to complain about things now since I haven't been very active as of late. Real life and diminishing interest seem to be getting the better of me. You were right to be bold. I'd like to see if we couldn't flesh this article out a little more. I still think we're missing some critical content in the Tenure sections. And you're right, I'll go through and fix the errors I came upon. To me though, those errors are evidence of a quick review, which isn't the way the process was intended to be. Sure, it's not an FAN, which can take weeks, but it's also not a DYK, which just requires a few checks on a requirements list. GA is a big deal in my opinion; I was pretty pumped when I got my first one. I guess I still have that idealistic view on what a GA should be. As for the comment on your talk, I figured you would have rather been notified explicitly than stumble across the comments I made. The latest round of nominations being considered by SHPO includes one from Troy that seems to be impossible to miss: United Waste Manufacturing Company Building, 1 Jackson Street. Apparently it's a big six-story brick complex right on the river that you can see quite well from across the river ... seems like it would be around Watervliet Arsenal. Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Albany NRHP list: article improvement done

Just letting you know that, with First Church in Albany (Reformed) now updated to the extent I could possibly do it to, I have finished the task I set for myself a year and a half ago as a prerequisite for an eventual FLC nom—making sure there's a real article at the other end of every listing (except for First Trust Company Building, for which OPRHP does not have the nomination online, and for which I can find little else). Took long enough, didn't it :-)?

I will now, in my task rotation, be working on the list itself. At first I'm going to just be focusing on the technical stuff: making sure there's alt text for every image, that the coordinates are the same as those given in the article and that they're correct, that everything that needs to be cited is cited and that they use complete sentences in their writeups (something that we mostly have done already, thankfully ... back a long time ago when I thought this was going to be easier).

Then I'll be expanding that text intro, explaining what aspects of Albany's history the listings represent, doing some numerical breakdowns (like x churches, y state government buildings, and so forth) and noting the extremes (oldest listing, newest listing, largest and smallest historic district etc.). After that, I think it will be time to put it on PR before we finally go to the big dance. Amazing ... I think at the current rate I'll actually make my original timetable of getting this list to FLC before the Pitkin County, Colorado, list. Daniel Case (talk) 18:46, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scott Murphy in 2009

The 2009 special election for the 20th congressional district of New York was held to fill the vacancy created when Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed US senator from New York, replacing Hillary Clinton, who had been appointed Secretary of State in the Obama administration. The two major-party candidates were Democrat Scott Murphy (pictured), a private businessman, and Republican Jim Tedisco, the minority leader of the New York State Assembly. Early polls favored Tedisco, but by February the race was considered a toss-up. The Republican Party considered the election to be a referendum on Obama's economic policy and injected significant funding into Tedisco's campaign. Major issues included Obama's stimulus plan, which Murphy supported while Tedisco eventually opposed. One early vote count had the candidates tied at 77,225 votes each. Absentee ballots decided the election; ballots were accepted until April 13. While Tedisco had been ahead in early counts, by April 23 Murphy had a 401-vote advantage and Tedisco conceded. Democratic electoral successes in November 2008 and Murphy's clear support of the stimulus package were credited for his success. (Full article...)

Two new Pittstown farmsteads pending, and where we are with the list

First: The list of pending noms for the next HPB meeting is up, and while it's shorter than usual, there are nevertheless two from the Capital District. Yup ... you guessed right. More of those Pittstown farmsteads:

So, if you've got the chance, there they are.

Now, as for the Albany list—despite my efforts to prolong it by being such a perfectionist, I do indeed hasten toward the pebbled shore. While writing in the alt texts, I was dismayed to find that foue articles (Cherry Hill, James Hall Office, Lafayette Park Historic District and Whipple Cast and Wrought Iron Bowstring Truss Bridge) were, while not stubs, not much better. So I expanded them, as you may have noticed.

I am not done with the articles yet, however. During the Lafayette Park article it occurred to me that two of that district's contributing properties deserved their own separate articles, rather than being written about in the context of the institution they were associated with.

So, I will be writing New York State Court of Appeals Building (which, I think, may be the only state highest-court building individually listed on the Register) and Joseph Henry Memorial (for the old Academy building). Then, I will be working on the list itself again (And wondering what to do with myself ... no, just kidding).

Due to this self-imposed delay it looks again as if I will be getting the Pitkin County, Colorado list (for which I just finished another key step) to FLC first. Which, as I've said before, may be helpful with the Albany list. Daniel Case (talk) 01:23, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yet more articles for the Albany list ...

I thought I was finally getting down to brass tacks with New York Court of Appeals Building (and thank you very much for your contributions to the Old Albany Academy Building naming discussion ... I can't believe it's still going on) now that every entry on the list links to an article specific to it. But then ... I noticed the Knickerbocker and Arnink Garages redlinked at the bottom. And ... there's another demolished listing, Dr. Hun Houses, that seems to have been removed within three months of being listed ([1]). Since they were at one point on the Register, they should have articles too even if we can't use the images in the list (and more about that re the Abrams Building at some point in the future). I don't think it would pass FLC with those unlinked.

So, I'm going to do that in the next couple of weeks. I don't think they should be long articles. And this will not affect the little personal race I have between the Albany list and the Pitkin County, Colorado, list as to which one will be ready for FLC first, as I thought the latter was closer but then I realized I'd skipped adding the alt tags, something I'd done with the Albany list a couple of months ago.

This quarter's pending NRHP noms in the Capital District

The board is meeting on this tomorrow morning:

Seems like they're getting a new MPS from Troy ready: Textile Factory Buildings in Troy, New York 1880–1920. Most seem to be in the same area of River Street—I would think between the Central Troy and Northern River Street Historic Districts. Looks like you could photograph all of them easily, not just the one that's to be nominated already: Searle, Gardner & Company Cuff and Collar Factory, 701–715 River Street.

Elsewhere in the city, there's also Theta Xi Fraternity Chapter House at 1490 Sage Avenue, apparently the Alpha Chapter of that organization as well as architecturally intact.

BACKLOG OF THE WEEK Category:Pages with broken reference names

Hello - some editors fight off the vandal hordes, as I do repairing pages with citation errors. If I didn't - there would be a large backlog in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting and in Category:Pages with missing references list as in Category:Pages with broken reference names (more than 1500 yesterday). But it is impossible to work it alone. Do you know how to do a "Blitz" (excuse the comparision) to find willing editors to work on it. It is much more easier to repair references if you do it one hour, one day or one week ago after the errors were made instead of months and years after the error was done. Very, very difficult to find these errors.

Only with WikiBlame Search it is possible to find and repair such errors.

New Capital District NRHP noms being considered by SHPB this week

It now looks like it may be a good thing that I have wound up taking a monthlong break from expanding the intro for the Albany NRHP list. I will be getting back to it soon, but ... at its quarterly meeting the day after tomorrow, the board will be considering two more nominations in the city of Albany that you might be able to photograph:

  • Albany Felt Company Complex, 1373 Broadway. A large group of buildings from one of the last paper companies to be doing business in Albany. Since this nine-acre parcel straddles the Albany-Menands municipal line, it will have to be added to the county list as well, and I will no longer be able to say that Albany shares no properties with any adjacent community. It will also displace the Miss Albany Diner as the northernmost listed property in the city. (I wish I'd known it would some day be nominated a year ago when I was in the building across the street where DOCCS's investigations unit is based—I could have taken some pictures then ...).

If they get approved at the meeting they will probably be submitted and listed by springtime, bringing the Albany list to a nice round 60 total. I'll continue working on the list, but I might want to hold off on the FLC we've been working toward till after these two are listed and have articles.

Elsewhere in the region, there are two more of those old textile-mill buildings on River Street in Troy from that MPS:

Then we go north from Schenectady into Glenville:

Lastly into Saratoga County:

Viewliner

Hi there. I've come to bother you because you seem to be active on Albany topics, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Capital District doesn't get much traffic. Amtrak is testing a brand-new Viewliner II baggage car at the Albany–Rensselaer (Amtrak station). See here for discussion and here for a picture of the car. This is the first such car produced, the first new Viewliner in almost twenty years and the first new single-level baggage car in decades. I was hoping you might be in a position to take a photograph of it, or to point me in the direction of someone who could. Van Rensselaers

As you have done significant work in this area, I am deferring the matter to you. By my count the patroons appear to be: Kiliaen (merchant), Johan, Jan Baptist, Jeremias, and Kiliaen, son of Johan. Yet the latter's entry is titled Kiliaen van Rensselaer (fourth patroon) (not 5th?). I've come across differences of opinion regarding both Johan (patroon only in name?), and Jan Baptist (Spooner says yes, Reynolds says no). The Van Rensselaer family template gives a pretty clear listing, but the entries after Jeremias don't seem to conform to it. I'm a bit hesitant to adjust someone else's work here, because it looks like the entries may be out of sync. Cheers. Mannanan51 (talk) 22:43, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's not easy to figure out; I'm not even sure the history is recorded fully. But you could probably find out by contacting Janny Vanema, who is like the authoritative scholar on Dutch Albany history. I've reached out to her in the past via email and she got back to me quickly with good information. Also, her book Kiliean Van Rensselaer (1586-1643) wasn't out yet when I wrote all of the content I did on the VRs, so there might be something you can find in there. As you can see, I haven't worked on it in a number of years (the template included; I built that originally), so you're probably just as apt as me to figure things out. Upon further research, the sources that state Jan Baptist was not patroon seem to follow Cuyler Reynolds, who apparently did not have access to Van Laer's translations. In the Bouwerie Manuscripts (pp. 787 & 788) Jan Baptist signs documents as "director" until the death of Johan, when in November 1663 the delegates to the convention at New Amsterdam refer to him as "patroon".[2] Moreover, his brother Jeremias writes to him as: "Myn Heere Joanys Batista Rensselaer, Patroon of the colony of Rensselaer".[3]
Apologies, please disregard. As Jeremias predeceased Jan Baptist, whom he addresses as Patroon, I have come to have reservations as to whether the first Jeremias was anything more than Director, and "patroon" merely a courtesy title. Capital District NRHP developments

Happy Thanksgiving, Matt. Nice to see you're still occasionally active. If you're interested and up for it:

The big news (from my perspective) in the NRHP nominations being considered by the state this quarter] is a considerable expansion of the Central Troy Historic District. If approved by the state and the NPS, it will now include the Uncle Sam Atrium (as the most visible artifact of the mid-20th century urban renewal era, the largest piece of modern architecture in downtown Troy and the last large-scale construction in it) the Beth Sephilah synagogue on River Street near Congress Street Bridge, and all of the Russell Sage College buildings, even the newer ones. You can look through the nomination and see what's being added. I am excited because it gives some coverage to the city's urban renewal era that might finally allow me to fill in that part of the city's history and give it what I think it needs to be an FA candidate.

The only other potential listing possibly in the CD is the Dunning Street Cemetery on Route 67 up in Malta. Nice and small; would compensate for the trip up there.

Don't worry if you can't get out to these ... I now have a DSLR of my own available (which has rewarded me with a bunch of QIs on Commons from my trip to London for Wikimania this past summer), and I am still planning, one of these days, to go up to Albany and thereabouts for some of the pictures I still want for the NRHP list (haven't worked on it in quite a while, but I still haven't forgotten).
