I pondered creating an article for this some time back (it was the Saturday Superstore number as well as Swap Shop) but couldn't find enough sources. Maybe if enough Cheggers obituaries name-check it, there'll be enough for a DYK like "did you know that in the 1970s, the only number kids could remember was 01 811 8055?" Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:31, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, that's amazeballs. When Cheggers' passing was noted today, a whole host of childhood memories came flooding back, remember Posh Paws? Remember TISWAS? Remember Stu Pot and the cabbages? The Rambling Man (talk) 21:32, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly do. Whatever happened to the cast of Rentaghost? I can't remember TISWAS too much as back then you got middle-class parents who wouldn't dream of letting their kids watch such downmarket trash like ITV .... except when the BBC went on strike. (though see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/01 811 8055) Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:37, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well Popov went to Corrie, and as for the rest of them, who knows? Master Timothy reminds me of Freddie Mercury (in my head)... The Rambling Man (talk) 21:54, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I remember doing a group read-through of A Midsummer Night's Dream at school, and in Act 3, scene 1, whoever was supposed to say Bottom's line of "Methinks, mistress, you should have little reason for that" changed it to "Methinks, mistress Meaker...." and delivered it exactly how Timothy Claypole would have done. Auto archiving

I raised this at Wikipedia:Bot requests#Automatic archiving. The author of IABot says it does create new archives if an old one does not exist, and I see that is correct. I ran it on List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Suffolk on 6 September, and it added old archive pages, 9 new ones dated 6 September and some not at all. So the bot does create new archives where one does not exist, but sometimes archiving fails for no apparent reason. Dudley Miles (talk) 17:43, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, good news! I use it as a matter of course these days prior to FLC/GAN/FAC nominations, so it's good to know it's doing its best. To that end, you may be happy to know therefore that I'm doing my best (with limited resources) to get as many sources archived as possible! Thanks for your note. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:07, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

I thought after yesterdays DYK replacement that i wanted to say thank you. Not just for the work you, and others, do every day to make sure the main page is of good quality but also because errors is one of the few places where it makes no difference who brings up an issue. All that matters is quality and fixing issues. For me at least there is no second thought of bringing things up there because i get treated as a human, so... thank you. Nothing world chaning but i thought a small note of my appreciation was due for your work. 91.49.94.126 (talk) 11:24, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I occasionally edit logged out just to see what people do, and also occasionally tar and feather those who assume all IP editors are vandals. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:53, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know of other admins who do precisely that. Interesting. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:04, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, see here. Pretty sure Drmies does it from time to time. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:53, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Quite interesting that some people do that. I just do not feel the need to make an account for the few things i do like fixing a random typo or reporting an error and the like. English is not my first language anyway and i don't really feel confident enough to write in a good enough tone for an encyclopedia... so why bother. And honestly, i am just too proud to make an account just so i would get treated in a decent manner (of course i had some quite nice interactions with people, Drmies being one of them for example). But it is incredibly frustrating to get reverted when one undos vandalism by a named account because obviously any IP undoing things is a revert on sight offense. My choice not to make an account though and so complaining about it is a bit rediculous, haha. But honestly, if i were a vandal i would instantly make an account because it would seem easier and more likely to "succeed", in the loosest sense of the word, with ones nonsense. 91.49.94.126 (talk) 01:18, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Boat Races 2017 scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the The Boat Races 2017 article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 21, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 21, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:18, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I did wonder, but basically I was struggling to find a sports article for that date. I won't be scheduling March anyway, but I'll see what I can find to run instead on 21 Jan. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:29, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question

I really hate to bother you yet again, the third time in a week now or whatever... sigh... But as you were always very helpful and more importantly know quite a lot about lists, i have a question. I was bold and removed a list from an article i found through lurking the dramah boards(i am weird, i know). The entire list of some 190 entries, or thereabout, is entirely sourced by, or sourced through as has been vigorously been pointed out to me, other Wikipedia articles. One editor agreed with my removal of the list while another rolled back without as much as a hint to why. A discussion was started on the talk page and the reason for the rollback was "Lists are often used whose sources are in the wikilinked articles". To the point of my question, is that in any way policy based and if so, which policy is it? I did ask on the talk page but did not get any pointer to a policy allowing that, just was told that is how it is. If anything, is is extremely lazy if the sources actually are in the other articles, which they mostly seem to be after a spot check. But i mainly just want to learn for the future, not that i will ever remove anything of the sort again i think, haha. So to sum up, is there a policy that allows lists to be sourced through wikilinked articles? And, is it common practice to do so? Oh and before i forget, keep in mind i found the article by chance so don't judge me, the article is Age of consent lol. As i have no interest in the article itself i am not fussed at all about the revert. I just want to understand it policy wise and learn from any mistake i may have made. "That is how it is" is not a reason i could accept without asking on what it is based... So i came here to annoy you yet again, hahaha (sorry about that :P ). 91.49.71.240 (talk) 03:39, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That argument is often used by lazy editors. It's a problem because relying on blue-linked articles to meet WP:V is full of problems. Articles should be standalone when it comes to verification. Wikipedia is not a reliable source. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:29, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers for the answer, "Wikipedia is not a reliable source" was basicaly my baseline of thinking. Then i got lied to by Softlavender in regards to several things, then i got called a vandal and after that a wikilawyering sock and single purpose account just for wanting to understand an everchanging rationale for their objection. If it had not been such an utterly disgusting experience i would almost call it hilarious how some "experienced editors", who constantly moralise on ANI, behave, haha. But i also have to say several editors stuck up for me and had clear words about the treatment i received, so it was not ALL bad. 91.49.80.251 (talk) 16:17, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for Portman Road, and for this example of polite request, "I humbly submit the article to the scrutiny of the community and will, as I hope I always do, respond quickly and constructively to each and every comment you may wish to make.
