Minimax is a television channel aimed at children, broadcasting to Central European countries including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, ex-Yugoslav countries, Romania and Moldova. The channel was launched in 1999 in Hungary. Minimax's policy goals include edutainment and non-violent programs.

As of 2018, the channel runs 24 hours a day. Previously, Minimax time-shared the channel with MusicMax, Game One, iTV Hungary, M+, Animax and C8.

As the channel broadcasts in several countries in multiple languages with the same schedule (except a minor variation in the playout of commercial advertisements by country), the trailers for the channel's programs (as well as other presentational elements) do not feature any written information.

History

Minimax was launched in Hungary on December 6, 1999. At launch, the channel only aired from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.[1] In April 2000, a regional version of French television channel Game One began time-sharing with Minimax, broadcasting between 8:00 pm and 2:00 am. In 2001, Minimax was launched in Romania. In August 2001, ITV Hungary took over Game One's time-space.

In 2003, Minimax was launched in Slovakia. On September 15, 2004, Minimax was launched in the Czech Republic, taking over the channel space of the defunct TV channel Supermax. On September 15, 2003, Cool TV took over the evening slot.

On September 4, 2004, M+ was renamed to Cool TV and has operated independently from Minimax since December 6, 2003. On December 4, 2004, A+ Anime began time-sharing with Minimax, replacing Cool TV in the slot. On September 6, 2006, Sony Pictures Television International acquired A+ and later relaunched it as Animax on April 11, 2007.[2]

In 2007, Chellomedia (now AMC Networks International) acquired Minimax from the original owner. Later that year, the channel was launched in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.

Animax broadcast for the last time in the region on March 31, 2014, and was relaunched as C8 on April 1, 2014 in Hungary and May 5, 2014 in Romania, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.[3] On December 30, 2015, C8 ended in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, and Romania. Since that time, Minimax has aired 24 hours per day in those countries.[4] On January 1, 2016, Minimax began operating 24 hours per day except in Hungary. In December 2017, it was announced that Minimax will operate for 24 hours per day in Serbia by New Year's Eve.[5] On January 1, 2018, when the C8 slot was completely abolished, Minimax filled up the overnight slot, thereby running 24 hours per day for the very first time.
