Jeon Jung-kook (Korean: 전정국; born September 1, 1997), better known mononymously as Jungkook, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is the main vocalist in the South Korean boy band BTS.[3] As a songwriter, he has six songs accredited to his name by the Korea Music Copyright Association.[4]

Early life and pre-debut

Jungkook was born on September 1, 1997 in Busan, South Korea.[3][5][6] His family consists of his parents and an elder brother.[7][6] He attended Baekyang Elementary and Middle School in Busan, then when he became a trainee he transferred to Singu Middle School in Seoul.[8] Jungkook initially had dreams of becoming a badminton player when he was young, but after seeing G-Dragon perform "Heartbreaker" on television, it influenced him to want to become a singer.[9][10]

In 2011, Jungkook auditioned for the South Korean talent show Superstar K during its auditions in Daegu.[11] Though he was not selected for the talent show series, Jungkook received casting offers from seven entertainment companies, and eventually chose to be a trainee under Big Hit Entertainment after seeing RM, now his fellow bandmate in BTS, perform.[11] To work on his versatile dance skills in preparation for his debut, he went to Los Angeles during the summer of 2012 to receive dance training from Movement Lifestyle.[12] In June 2012, he appeared in Jo Kwon's "I'm Da One" music video.[13] He also worked as a backup dancer for Glam (now disbanded) before his debut.[14] He graduated from Seoul's School of Performing Arts, an arts high school, in 2017.[8][15] In November 2016 he decided to forgo taking the CSATs, Korea's nationwide university entrance exam, and is currently enrolled at Global Cyber University along with other five BTS members, namely RM, J-Hope, Suga, V and Jimin.[16]

Career

2013–present: BTS

On June 12, 2013, Jungkook made his debut as a member of BTS with the release of the single 2 Cool 4 Skool.[17] Under the name of BTS, he has released two solo tracks; the first was a pop track titled "Begin" on the 2016 album Wings, which tells his story about moving to Seoul to become an idol and expresses his gratitude towards his BTS members.[18] The second song was a future bass track titled "Euphoria". The music video titled "Euphoria: Theme of Love Yourself 起 Wonder" was released on April 5, 2018 as the introduction of BTS' "Love Yourself" series[19] and later its full studio track was released with their album titled Love Yourself: Answer on August 24, 2018.[1] Euphoria, which was produced by DJ Swivel, charted at number five on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart and charted for 13 weeks on the Gaon Digital Chart.[20][21][22]

So far, Jungkook has been credited as the main producer for two BTS' songs, namely "Love is Not Over" and "Magic Shop".[23][24] On October 25, 2018, Jungkook (together with the rest of the BTS members) was ordained with the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit by the President of South Korea.[25][26]

2015–present: Solo activities

In September 2015, he participated in the "One Dream, One Korea" campaign and its campaign song, which was a collaboration between many Korean artists in memory of the Korean War. The song was released on September 24 and presented at the One K Concert in Seoul on October 15 of that year.[27]

Jungkook has released various covers of songs by artists such as Justin Bieber, Adam Levine, Tori Kelly, Troye Sivan, and David Guetta on BTS' official Twitter and Soundcloud[28].[29] He has also covered songs of Korean artists such as Zion.T, Park Won[30], IU, Roy Kim, and Lee Hi.[31]

In 2016, Jungkook was cast in shows the pilot episode of Flower Crew and appeared on Celebrity Bromance.[32][33] He also appeared in the show King of Mask Singer under the name "Fencing Man" competing in episodes 71 and 72 respectively.[34] In December of the same year, he participated in the special stage segment of 2016 KBS Song Festival ith other artists forming the "K-Pop 97 Line", performing the song "A Flying Butterfly (나는 나비" which was originally released by veteran South Korean rock band YB.[35] In 2018, the Korean pay television music channel Mnet invited Jungkook to be an honorary director for BTS' comeback show to celebrate the release of the album Love Yourself: Tear. It was his first time directing in an official capacity.[36]

On November 6, 2018, Jungkook performed "We Don't Talk Anymore" with the original singer Charlie Puth as a special collaboration stage during the first part of MBC Plus X Genie Music Awards.[37]

Impact and influence

In a 2016 survey conducted by Gallup Korea, Jungkook was ranked the 20th most preferred idol of the year.[38] In 2017, he came in at 18th in the same survey.[39]

In 2018, Jungkook placed first for 10 weeks in a row for magazine Hi China, under the most beloved celebrities list in China.[40] In October 2018, Jungkook broke the record of most real-time viewers with his solo live broadcast in V Live history with more than 3.7 million viewers worldwide.[41] In December 2018, a video of Jungkook singing in his studio was revealed to be the most retweeted tweet in the country that year.[42] In the 2018 survey conducted by Gallup Korea he ranked at 8th most preferred idol of the year.[43] Various artists have cited him as an influence and role model, such as Kim Dong-han and Hyeongseop X Euiwoong.[44]

In January 2019, in a conversation with fans in BTS' official fancafe, Jungkook shared about using the fabric softener brand Downy for his laundry.[45] It led to sudden spike in popularity and sales, and two month's worth of the Downy product was sold out and the Korean company's stock value rose by more than 11% in a day.[46]
