Into the Dark is an American horror anthology web television series that premiered on October 5, 2018, on Hulu. The series is set to consist of twelve feature-length episodes.

The series is produced by the television branch of Blumhouse Productions, with founder Jason Blum executive producing every episode. Each episode features its own ensemble casts and director, with directors including Patrick Lussier, Nacho Vigalondo, Sophia Takal, Daniel Stamm, James Roday, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Patrick Casey and Josh Miller contributing installments.

Into the Dark was ordered in January 2018, and has been met with a positive response from critics upon its premiere. Each episode has starred different actors, including Tom Bateman, Dermot Mulroney, Nyasha Hatendi, Suki Waterhouse, Matt Lauria, Jimmi Simpson, Keir O'Donnell, Israel Broussard and Clayne Crawford.

Premise

Each episode of the series is inspired by a holiday from the month in which it is released.[1]

Production

Development

On January 9, 2018, it was announced that Hulu had given the production a series order to consist of a first season of twelve episodes. Each episode was set to be released one month apart beginning in October 2018. The series' first twelve episodes were expected to function as standalone stories though some narrative device or structural device was expected to connect them.[10][11][12][13][14]

On May 2, 2018, it was announced that the series had been titled Into the Dark and would premiere on October 5, 2018 with an episode entitled "The Body", directed by Paul Davis who co-wrote the script with Paul Fisher. Davis and Fisher were announced as producers and Alexa Faigen executive producer. Additionally, the series' second episode was announced as well with the title "Flesh & Blood", Patrick Lussier directing, and a release date of November 2, 2018.[1][15][16] On October 11, 2018, production designer Cecil Gentry revealed in an interview with Dead Entertainment that he was working on ten out of twelve episodes of the series, that an episode centered on Christmas titled "Pooka" would air in December, and that an episode centered around April Fools' Day titled "I'm Just Fucking with You" would air in April.[17] That same day, it was reported that "I'm Just Fucking with You" would be directed by Adam Mason from a script by Gregg Zehentner and Scott Barkan. It additionally reported that an episode titled "School Spirit" would premiere in August 2019 and be directed by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller.[6] On November 27, 2018, it was reported that an episode titled "New Year, New You" would air in January 2019, an episode centered on Valentine's Day and titled "Down" would air in February, and that an episode titled "Treehouse" would air in March.[18]

On December 7, 2018, it was reported that Sophia Takal had directed "New Year, New You" from a script written by Adam Gaines. The episode was now expected to premiere on December 28, 2018.[3] On December 18, 2018, it was reported that Daniel Stamm would direct "Down" from a script written by Kent Kubena and that it would premiere on February 1, 2019. It was also announced that James Roday would write and direct "Treehouse" and that it would premiere on March 1, 2019. [19][5] On February 11, 2019, it was reported that an episode centered on Mother's Day and titled "All That We Destroy" had been directed by Chelsea Stardust from a script by Sean Keller and Jim Agnew and that it would premiere on May 3, 2019.[20] On April 12, 2019, it was reported that an episode centered on Father's Day and titled "They Come Knocking" had been directed by Adam Mason from a script by Shane Van Dyke and Carey Van Dyke and that it would premiere on June 7, 2019,[7] as well as an episode centered on Independence Day and titled "Culture Shock" had been directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero from a script by James Benson, Efren Hernandez and Gigi Saul Guerrero and that it would premiere on July 4, 2019.[7] On June 5, 2019, it was reported that an episode centered on the first day of school and titled "School Spirit" had been directed by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller from a script by the same duo and that it would premiere on August 2, 2019.[8]

Casting

Simultaneously with the announcement of the series premiere, it was confirmed that Tom Bateman, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Aurora Perrineau, David Hull, and Ray Santiago would star in the series' first episode and that Dermot Mulroney, Diana Silvers, and Tembi Locke would star in the second episode.[1][15][16] On November 12, 2018, it was announced that the third episode would star Nyasha Hatendi.[21] On December 7, 2018, it was reported that the fourth episode would star Suki Waterhouse, Carly Chaikin, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Melissa Bergland.[3] On December 18, 2018, it was reported that the fifth episode would star Natalie Martinez, Matt Lauria, Arnie Pantoja, Diane Sellers, and Christina Leone and that the sixth episode would star Jimmi Simpson, Mary McCormack, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Maggie Lawson, Stephanie Beatriz, Julianna Guill, Michael Weston, Amanda Walsh, Sutton Foster, and Cass Bugge.[19][5] On January 16, 2019, it was announced that Keir O'Donnell, Hayes MacArthur, and Jessica McNamee would star in the seventh episode.[22] On February 11, 2019, it was reported that Samantha Mathis, Israel Broussard, Aurora Perrineau, Dora Madison, and Frank Whaley would star in the eighth episode.[20] On April 12, 2019, it was announced that Clayne Crawford, Josephine Langford, Lia McHugh and Robyn Lively would star in the ninth episode.[7] On April 12, 2019 as well, it was announced that Martha Higareda, Shawn Ashmore, Barbara Crampton, Felipe de Lara, and Creed Bratton would join Richard Cabral in the tenth episode.[23] On June 5, 2019, it was reported that Corey Fogelmanis, Annie Q., Jessi Case, Julian Works, Philip Labes and Hugo Armstrong would star in the eleventh episode.[8]

Marketing

On September 13, 2018, the first trailer for the series was released, advertising the premiere episode "The Body".[24] On October 1, 2018, a second trailer for the episode was released.[25] On October 24, 2018, a trailer for the episode "Flesh and Blood" was released.[26] On November 26, 2018, a trailer for the episode "Pooka!" was released.[27] On December 6, 2018, a clip from "Pooka!" was released.[28] On December 12, 2018, a series of images from "New Year, New You" were released.[29] Five days later, the official trailer for the episode was released.[30] On December 23, 2018, a series of still images from the episode "Down" were released.[31] On February 19, 2019, a trailer for the episode "Treehouse" was released.[32] On March 20, 2019, a trailer for the episode "I'm Just F*cking with You" was released.[33] On April 18, 2019, a trailer for the episode "All That We Destroy" was released.[34] On May 30, 2019, a trailer for the episode "They Come Knocking" was released.[35] On June 23, 2019, a trailer for the episode "Culture Shock" was released.[36]

Premiere

On September 21, 2018, the series held its world premiere during the annual LA Film Festival in Los Angeles, California with a screening of the episode "The Body" at the Writers Guild Theater.[37] The episode "I'm Just Fucking with You" held its world premiere during the 2019 South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas as a part of the festival's "Narrative Spotlight" series of screenings.[22]

Distribution

On October 11, 2018, it was announced that Sony Pictures Television had acquired the international rights to the series. Sony was expected to take the series out for sale internationally and begin its sale effort at the Mipcom market in Cannes the following week.[38]

Reception

The series has been met with a positive response from critics upon its premiere. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 69% approval rating with an average rating of 5.7 out of 10 based on 7 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Into the Dark is a worthy horror anthology, offering viewers a selection of frightening and witty gothic tales like a tray of cobwebbed bonbons, making for a spooky Halloween treat."[39]
