Star Wars on the internet

The franchise has gained a notable presence on the internet thanks to the advance of social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. On top of the many fan edits the franchise has inspired[1][2] like Harmy's Despecialized Edition, there have been various memes related to specific moments in the movies themselves, like a mistranslated Chinese bootleg of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith[3][4][5] and 'TR-8R' from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.[6][7] In 2010, a shot for shot remake of the original film, called Star Wars Uncut, debuted on the internet.
Additionally, the franchise's devoted fan-base has laid the groundwork for some alleged review-bombing that was directed at Star Wars: The Last Jedi after some viewers expressed their disappointment in the film.[8] Despite this, there were also equally supportive fans on the internet who appreciated the film's diversion from Star Wars tradition.[9]
The franchise's impact on the internet is not limited to the films alone; the character Palpatine became the subject of various memes online, especially after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. These memes have particular focus on Palpatine's appearance in Revenge of the Sith.[10][11][12]

The Fandom Menace
After Disney's acquisition of the "Star Wars" franchise, the corporation renamed Star Wars Expanded Universe content as "Legends"; making it non-canon[16]. This upset many Star Wars fans, splintering the fandom. [17].
Then when Disney released Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this divide in the fandom grew with some fans unhappy that it was a rehash of A New Hope; while others claimed the movie "betrayed" original Star Wars canon [18]. The creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, was unhappy with the film as well, claiming Disney betrayed his wishes for the franchise [19].
The release of the next film in the saga Star Wars: The Last Jedi created even more backlash, spurring some fans to criticize what they thought Disney was "doing" to the franchise [20]. Some of the backlash - particularly at the characters of Rey, Finn, and Rose - has led to accusations of racism and/or sexism as well as harassing the cast and crew of Star Wars.
This perceived disrespect towards the Star Wars fanbase caused some more fans to unite against Disney, who named themselves "The Fandom Menace"[21]. The Fandom Menace was mentioned by JJ Abrams, the director of the seventh and ninth movies in the Star Wars saga[22]. A member of this group "Echo Base Network" also produced a fan made documentary on the Star Wars sequel trilogy called "Star Wars: A Sequel Trilogy Documentary" that covers the timeline of the sale of Lucasfilm all the way to the point right past the release of The Rise of Skywalker[23].
