Links to more detailed state lists are shown.[1] According to a report by the Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina in 2017, 79 mostly rural hospitals have closed since 2010, mostly across the Southern United States.[2][3]

In 2020, there were 5,250 acute care and critical access hospitals in the United States. In the decade from 2010 to 2020, dozens of hospitals have closed in rural areas of the United States, particularly in the Southeast region. Of the 3,143 county-equivalents in the United States, there were 700 counties in the United States with no hospitals in 2020.[4] The following list contains links to the lists and the number of articles in the main category for each state.
