The Master's University is a non-denominational, conservative Christian liberal arts college in Santa Clarita, California, United States.

History

The college was founded in 1927.[1]: 69  It was originally named Los Angeles Baptist College and Seminary.[citation needed] In 1961, it moved to Newhall in Santa Clarita, California.[citation needed] In 1985 it changed its name to The Master's College.[citation needed]

Campus

The college provides separate dormitories for men and women with the exception of C.W. Smith Hall and Hotchkiss Hall, where men live in the East Wing and women in the West Wing. In addition to the on-campus residence halls the colleges offers off-campus housing at Oak Manor located about two miles from the main campus.[2]

Academic profile

The college has a biblical studies program.[3] The college offers a one-year, intensive Bible training program known as "The Master's Institute".[3]

The Master's College Biology Department offers a variety of emphases including pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-allied health services, cellular and molecular biology, and environmental biology.[4]

Rankings

In the 2006–07 edition of U.S. News & World Report of "America’s Best Colleges", the college is ranked second (2nd) in the West as Best Comprehensive Colleges—Bachelor’s.[5] In the 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report of “America’s Best Colleges”, the college has been ranked second (2nd) in the West as one of America’s Best Colleges in the category of Best Comprehensive Baccalaureate Colleges. This marks the eighth year in a row that the college was listed in the top tier of Western Region Baccalaureate Colleges.[6] The college is also cited as one of the best values, ranking 4th in the category of “Great Schools, Great Prices.”[7]

Accreditation and memberships

The college is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.[8] It is one of approximately 105 members of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.[9]

Athletics

The college teams, nicknamed the Mustangs, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, primarily competing in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The college is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.[citation needed] Sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country running, golf, soccer, track and volleyball.[10]

Curtis Lewis, head coach of the women's soccer team, won the NIA Women's Soccer Coach of the Year award in 2008. In 2009, Jim Rickard won the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year award.[11]

Among other sports people from the college are Jerry Owens, Mike Penberthy and Erin Perperoglou (formerly Buescher).[citation needed]
