Team Trees, also known as TeamTrees or #TeamTrees, is a 2019 collaborative fundraising challenge aiming to raise 20 million U.S. dollars by 2020 to plant 20 million trees. The initiative was started by American YouTubers MrBeast and Mark Rober, and is mostly supported by YouTubers.[1][2] All donations will go to the Arbor Day Foundation, a tree-planting organization that pledges to plant one tree for every U.S. dollar donated. The Arbor Day Foundation plan to begin planting in January 2020 and end "no later than December 2022".[3][4] It has been estimated that 20 million trees would take up 180 km2 (69 sq mi) of land,[5] absorb 1.6 million tons of carbon and remove 116 thousand tons of chemical air pollution from the atmosphere.[6]

Background

The idea started on May 24, 2019, when a fan suggested on Reddit that MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) should plant 20 million trees to celebrate reaching 20 million subscribers on YouTube.[7] The idea spread across YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter, mostly in the form of memes.[3][4] The idea may be related to the 2019 Amazon rainforest wildfires. American YouTuber, engineer, and inventor Mark Rober partnered directly with Donaldson to launch the fundraiser. On October 25, 2019, Donaldson uploaded a YouTube video explaining his plan,[8] which claimed the top spot on YouTube's trending page, and numerous YouTubers have joined the movement.[4][9][2] Every donation goes to the Arbor Day Foundation, which pledges to plant one tree for every U.S. dollar donated.[3]

Notable YouTubers who have donated include Rhett & Link,[3] Marshmello,[3] iJustine,[3] Marques Brownlee,[3] The Slow Mo Guys,[3] Ninja,[3][10] Simone Giertz,[3] Jacksepticeye,[3][11] Smarter Every Day,[3] PewDiePie,[10][12] Simply Nailogical, The King of Random, The Try Guys, Alan Becker,[10][13] Alan Walker,[14][15] and Jeffree Star.[10][16][17] Entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk,[18][19] Tobias Lütke,[20][21] Marc Benioff,[10][22] Susan Wojcicki,[10][23] Jack Dorsey,[10][24] and Jean-Michel Lemieux[10][25] have also donated and promoted the campaign. Notable companies who have donated include Verizon, Discovery Channel, and Plants vs. Zombies.

The trees will be planted "in a variety of forests on public and private lands in areas of great need" starting in January 2020. The goal is to have them planted "no later than December 2022".[3][4]

Responses

Media outlets such as BBC,[16] The Guardian,[26] CNN,[1] Insider,[4] Newsweek,[2] released positive articles about the tree-planting campaign and it's subsequent environmental impact; with the BBC referencing their article, Climate change: Trees 'most effective solution' for warming.[27] Although, some outlets were skeptical of the campaigns future impact; The Verge warned of the potential pitfalls that large-scale tree-planting projects must avoid to allow the trees to provide benefits to eco-systems and the planet.[9]

Discovery Channel made a documentary called #TeamTrees about the campaign which aired on December 3, 2019, coupled with a donation of USD $100,200 the next day.[28]
