Airlines for Europe (A4E) is a trade association of European airlines created in January 2016. It handles political lobbying operations for the benefit of its 16 members.

History

Airlines for Europe was created in January 2016 by Europe's five largest carriers: Air France–KLM Group, EasyJet, International Airlines Group, Lufthansa Group and Ryanair Holdings. It was the first airlines trade association to have full-service and low-cost carriers as members. It was created in response to the perceived ineffectiveness of the previous major European airlines trade association, the now-defunct Association of European Airlines.[3]

Upon its creation, A4E declared war on supposedly subsidised airlines from the Gulf region that compete unfairly against other international airlines.[4] According to Lobbyfacts.eu, A4E has six representatives actively lobbying at the European parliament.[5]

At the end of 2019, A4E represents more than 70 percent of European air traffic and served more than 720 million passengers which accounted a total contribution of 130 billion EUR in annual revenues.[1]

Objectives

The main goal of this organisation is to address key issues and promote long-term solutions for the European civil aviation.[1][6]

  • Improving European airspace efficiency.
  • Revise the European Air Passenger Rights.
  • Improving the safety and security for passengers, workers and companies.
  • Tackling airport market power and eliminating unjustified aviation taxes.
  • Moving towards a zero or low-carbon economy and thereby supporting efforts to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
