Production
Development
While The Suicide Squad (2021) writer and director James Gunn was editing that film in August 2020 quarantining in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, he began writing a spin-off television series centered on the character Peacemaker from that film, which he admitted was "mostly for fun". Gunn used his time allocated between The Suicide Squad and his Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) to write the eight episodes of the series, which was done in eight weeks.[6][7] Peacemaker was announced the next month for WarnerMedia's streaming service HBO Max, with a straight-to-series order for the eight episodes. Gunn was set to direct the first episode and several others, with The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran serving as an executive producer along with Gunn, and star John Cena serving as a co-executive producer.[8][1][5] In December 2020, Matt Miller joined the series as an executive producer, with Cena also serving in that role.[9]
Casting
John Cena was announced to be reprising his role as Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad in September 2020,[1] and Steve Agee joined the next month in his role of John Economos, also returning from that film.[2] In November, Jennifer Holland was announced to return as her The Suicide Squad character Emilia Harcourt, along with the castings of Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith, and Chris Conrad as Adrian Chase / The Vigilante,[3][4] followed the next month by Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, with Lochlyn Munro as Larry Fitzgibbon, Annie Chang as Detective Sophie Song, and Christopher Heyerdahl as Captain Locke in supporting roles.[5]
Filming
By early November 2020, Gunn had arrived in Vancouver, Canada for a two-week quarantine before starting production on the series.[10] Filming began on January 15, 2021 in Burnaby, Vancouver, and will conclude on June 9, 2021.[11][6]
