Rani Channamma University[3][4] is a public university established by the government of Karnataka in 2010 at Belgaum (also called Belagavi). It was created by upgrading the erstwhile Kittur Rani Channamma Post Graduate Centre at Belagavi which was established by the Karnatak University, Dharwad in 1982.[citation needed] It is named after Kitturu Rani Chennamma, the queen of the princely state of Kittur in Karnataka.[citation needed]

The main aim of this university is to provide an opportunity to develop access to for higher education for students hailing from North Karnataka Region which is deprived of good educational facilities.[citation needed] Rani Channamma University has the main campus, called “Vidyasangama”, as its headquarters, on 172 acres of picturesque land near Bhutaramanahatti, adjacent to the Poona–Bangalore National Highway 4 about 18 km from Belagavi city. It has been functioning with the jurisdiction of Belagavi, Bijapur and Bagalkote districts.[citation needed]
