Most International Titles / Most Successful Club in Spain

Barcelona is historically the most successful club in Spanish football, as well as being, jointly, the club with most International Titles in World football.

Here's why:

With 66 domestic titles and 86 overall (2nd best is Real Madrid C.F. with 62 domestic and 80 overall). It should be like other clubs' articles (FC Bayern Munich and Juventus F.C., that they're most successful in their respective countries). This is a fact, not an opinion. Also, along with Egypt's Al Ahly SC, Barcelona is the club with most trophies (20) in international competitions.

Here're two references:

1) RSSSF: http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/intcuprec.html

As seen here, Barca /Al-Ahly are first with total of (20), Real/Milan/Boca are second with (18).

2) FIFA (ESP): http://es.fifa.com/news/y=2009/m=3/news=-1040575.html

Listing all 86 "Principales Titulos: Main Titles". According to FIFA, the 3 Inter-Cities Fairs are considered the predecessor to UEFA Cup -which it is- that's what is wrote in the reference "Copa de Ferias (antigua Copa de la UEFA): (3) 1958, 1960, 1966."

Therefore, clearly, Barcelona has 86 OFFICIALLY recognized titles, 66 National and 20 International, which make them both most successful in spain and club with most International titles.

Further points I want to clarify:

-There's no measuring scale for a trophy, It's not like that for Champions leauge you take 5 points as a club and for Super Cup it is 0.23 Points!! Maybe we consider the meaning/length of the tournament, but a trophy IS a trophy.

-We're talking about "International Titles" here, not "Champions League Only-Titles" which logically directs to the quantity, the number, rather than the value. For example a team plays in Africa, won 4 CAF Champions League, and in Europe one won 4 also, you can't say that UEFA Champions League = 3 CAF Champions League. When you count International success, they both are equal in terms of titles won, despite difference in quality, which could also be found between Domestic League, Cup and Super Cup.

Thank you.

Thank you indeed. That's all lovely jubbley, but there is not a chance in hell will the expression "most successful club" meet the stringent requirement that comes with featured article status. First off what is "most successful"? Does more trophies mean "most successful"? Let's look at this case. The two biggest trophies are? The European Cup, and La Liga. Real Madrid are a long way ahead in both. Does winning...let's say four Fairs City Cups and four Cup Winners cups (both defunct) compare to two European Cups? Now I've seen various ranking systems where they give a value to each trophy (European Cup and domestic league (in this case la Liga) are the two highest ranked). The low level comps (glorified friendlies such as the European Super Cup) are given the least points. The problem with "most successful" is that it's not definitive...it's opinion, unless it's crystal clear...for example...won more European Cups, domestic titles, domestic cups, and trophies overall. I as a Liverpool fan have never gotten involved with our success in comparison to Man United...we have two more European Cups, they have two more League titles..while the totals are very close. The Madrid-Barca debate I can talk freely on as I have no preference either way (I've removed negative content from both teams, I've added positive content to both teams...maintaining accuracy is the goal). This issue on trophies cropped up in late 2013 in El Clasico...which I just about managed to solve after Madrid and Barca fans went back and forth at each other. The way it is written now I believe is the best...each individual trophy is addressed (Barca has won more Copa del Reys, more FIFA clubs etc.). Even international titles is a flaky tag....10 European Cups, or... four Fairs cups, four Cup winners cups and euro three Euro super cups (total 11)...I think we all know which is of far greater value. It's best not to lump all together, and instead focus on each individual trophy and give it a direct ranking. Carlos Rojas77 (talk) 01:08, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
I can guarantee that I know UEFA club coefficient/ranking based on Competitions performances points, if that what you mean. Also, really?, I already said that value differs from trophy to the other!! I agree with you. But... If a team (Real Madrid) won 10 champions league, 5 of which are the first editions of the predecessor to the competition, are they of less value than the latter 5 because of how teams where picked or the number of participants were there?! Just NO. It was like a FIFA Club World Cup competition, yet they're counted 10 Champions League trophies. It is the same when saying overall International Trophies, International means champions league, super cup, uefa cup, uefa cup winners' cup, etc.. Real Madrid are the record winners of champions League, ONLY, that's absolutely right, but that does NOT mean that they have more INTERNATIONAL TROPHIES, it's not like I'm saying a biased opinion, it is what RSSSF rank, Barca/Al Ahly as Clubs with most trophies. It's like comparing Kuyt/Pirlo, let them be scoring 3/2 goals in champions league, and 0/5 in super cup, respectively, it is obvious that pirlo have more INTERNATIONAL goals (7) than kuyt in CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ONLY (3).
Same when saying "Most Successful Club in Spain", you tell me what success is? why does not Real Madrid have Super cups as many as Champions leagues (10), because they simply FAILED to win, other clubs win it, success is based on Titles I guess? As long as it is official first division title it counts, or not?! for example, domestically, Real Madrid is more successful particularly in the league, but Bracelona is more successful in any other domestic competition and not having 0 leagues either.. so you failed to win some and succeeded to win some, you won titles I couldn't win, you're more successful. simple as that.
I'm taking Real Madrid for example because you automatically compared with Madrid, nationally and internationally while you could have compared also with Milan or Boca Juniors, I got that you just won't add this because of Real Madrid fans particularly despite, sadly, this is true that Barca has more overall titles (=more success). also other articles like FC Bayern Munich and Juventus F.C. have the same thing included (Most Successful club). I'm absolutely surprised that RSSSF ranking is not enough of what I'm saying, especially you're neutral. Also what logic is that ranking most successful clubs in Spain, in the article (Football Records in Spain) and not here? while many links redirects there. Karim3adel (talk) 03:24, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
In short, "most successful" is an opinion, which is not suitable for Wikipedia. The competitions that a club has won should be listed, and if any of these totals are a record for the competition then that should also be noted. Things like "most overall trophies" also becomes problematic because different sources and editors consider different competitions in the counts. The Copa Eva Duarte is a perfect case in point for Spanish football. So, let's not talk about "most successful". Ilikeeatingwaffles (talk) 10:07, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, I got it, I won't add something like this again, Thank you both for explaining. Karim3adel (talk) 05:18, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Barcelona influence on the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad

I think the article should feature something about the influence of Barca on the Spanish team. 9 out of 23 players of the Spanish squad were Barcelona players as they played a crucial role during the tournament in which Iniesta scored the winning goal in the final game. Multi-sport club

The article is currently too narrow in scope on the structure and history of FC Barcelona. The article describes FC Barcelona solely as a men's football club which is not true. FC Barcelona also includes the most successful basketball and handball teams in Europe. Admittedly, the football club is the largest element and namesake of the group, but the failure to even mention that FC Barcelona is a multi-sport club is a pretty bad omission for a featured article.

Can anyone create a section covering the wider FC Barcelona? The featured Spanish and German versions of this article show a good approach to this content. SFB 21:22, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Out on loan

The "out on loan" section includes many players that have never played or been part of the senior squad, hence should be removed (there are many other players in the youth system who are out on loan, but have not been included there).

The only actual players from the senior squad are...

- Marlon Santos (on loan to Nice until 30 June 2019)

- Sergi Samper (on loan to Las Palmas until 30 June 2018) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trantor2312 (talkcontribs) 10:32 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Notable supporters?

Hi all,

I was wondering if we could/should do a section on their notable supporters? It would include people like Kobe Bryant (may he rest in peace), Shaqira, Salvador Dali, Jose Carreras, Ranbir Kapoor etc. What do you all think? Thanks. --EtaPravda (talk) 16:50, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Bad finances

It seems quite clear, even from a vantage point quite distanced from Barcelona that their finances are very bad, not to say disastrous. In this ESPN news item (ESPN being an America focused media outlet) it's said that debt stands "at almost €1.2 billion,", that a "€525m loan from Goldman Sachs" is needed to pay debts and that Messi might not be able to stay for financial reasons. The "Ownership and finances" section however reads like an excerpt from a Barcelona ad brochure! This is shocking. To begin with a POV tag might be in order because the information is currently blatantly misleading. --Jabbi (talk) 21:07, 21 June 2021 (UTC).

Necessary references

As per the recent edits by User:Vicpumu, I'm not convinced the "Current squad" listing maintains an accurate representation according the sole source of the section. I added a temporary source regarding the transfer of Lewandowski, and another user edited the section to match the only other source, regarding what is shown in Barcelona's official squad page (https://www.fcbarcelona.com/en/football/first-team/players). I don't think it is an accurate portrayal to list players not given on the sole source, and given the ones that are not listed on said page but are indeed at the club, additional sources should be offered until updated. Noroftheair (talk) 09:06, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Exactly. We know these players are under contract with Barcelona but we need additional citations to prove such. Don't remove them by calling them unnecessary Noroftheair (talk) 21:55, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

FC Barcelona official players source

The official web source of the Barcelona first-team squad contains a lot of errors and problems of mantenaince. Players like Raphinha (with contract signed a few days ago after being official transferred), Iñaki Peña, Pjanić and Collado don’t appear and have a current contract. The website does not have truthful information in certain cases. Vicpumu (talk) 18:46, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Reliance on WP:PRIMARY is the issue here. Their Transfer Market news page is slightly better formatted for indicating the status of transfers, but even then there are going to be issues with squad numbers etc until the formal registration. These issues are also reflected on other reliable sources such as SkySports. We should not be so obsessed with updating temporary numbers of players etc until formal announcements are made otherwise it just becomes an edit war. Koncorde (talk) 17:51, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

ADDITION OF THE RESERVE TEAM

It would be interesting add reserve team players under the squad of first team players as it was a few months ago. What do you think? Vicpumu (talk) 23:05, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

@Vicpumu: Heads up that I removed the section because the season hasn't started officially. It's something that's been done for the past few seasons. I didn't just remove it for no reason. Usually the procedure is that once La Liga starts and there are reserve players included in the matchday squad lists, they're added, and as the season goes on more are added as more players are called up for matches. It's not gone permanently Oblow14 (talk) 18:16, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

DEBATE ON A MORE ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF FC BARCELONA

Hello Editors of FC Barcelona page;

As we all know, FC Barcelona is not just a football club. It is a professional multi-sport entity and this is reflected in its official statutes (updated in 2021) in the article number 4:

ARTICLE 4, Functional scope
The aims of the Club are:

1. Primarily, the promotion, practice, dissemination and exhibition of football, as well as basketball, handball, roller hockey, futsal, hockey, ice hockey, figure skating, athletics, rugby and volleyball.

The definition for FC Barcelona on this wikipedia page defines it as a football club when it is more than just a club dedicated to the promotion of football as specified in the referenced article.

I would also like to show what it says in article 1 of FC Barcelona's official statutes:

ARTICLE 1, Nature:

FUTBOL CLUB BARCELONA is a private Catalan sports association of natural persons, with its own legal status and capacity to act, constituted on November 29 of the year 1899.

According to article 1, it is well specified that FC Barcelona is a private sports (not only football) association for this reason, I think it is appropriate that we should modify the current definition.

PROPOSAL (Based on the description used by FC Bayern Munich, it is also a multi-sport club) + Addition of cite:

Futbol Club Barcelona (Catalan pronunciation: [fubˈbɔl ˈklub bəɾsəˈlonə] ), commonly referred to as Barcelona and colloquially known as Barça ([ˈbaɾsə]), is a professional multi-sports club[1] based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is best known for its professional football team, which competes in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish football.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Vicpumu (talk) 00:14, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I find this editing proposal very interesting. As a member (soci) of Barça, I can say that Fc Barcelona is not just a football club. And the current definition does not reflect what its statutes include and what it represents for the city of Barcelona and Catalonia. Barça is more than a club also because of its multi-sport nature. Without this premise, it would not have the identity it represents today. I want this edition to be done as soon as possible. 62.57.104.142 (talk) 00:02, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
I totally agree with the proposal. I have to say that if it were up to me, I would make a general page and a specific one for the men's football team. 185.124.28.5 (talk) 15:25, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
I also agree with the proposal. Dalí's Mustache (talk) 00:40, 31 August 2022 (UTC) This is a sock of the OP,and it seems likely the IP editors are too. Spike 'em (talk) 08:40, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
I disagree with the proposal. "This article is about the men's football team". This article focuses on one section of the wider sports club devoted to the men's association football team, not the wider sports club itself. If we defined the subject of this article as a "multi-sports club" we may then have to explain all the different sections belonging to that club even though it is an article on "the men's football team". However, I do think that the paragraph still needs to change for those same reasons and I instead propose that "[[Football team| football club]]" is changed to "[[football team| football team]]" because, as you rightfully point out, it is inaccurate to describe it as a football club, and this article is about the men's football section (i.e. team not club). In the FC Barcelona Femení article, it is already (correctly) described as a "football team" not a "football club" unlike this article on the men's team (which because of the nature of male dominance in football is confusingly just referred to as FC Barcelona). In the same sense, I believe the FC Barcelona Bàsquet article should say "basketball team" not "basketball club" as it does now.
On a separate but related note, I do think that it would be a good idea to create an article on the wider FC Barcelona (sports club) that could define FC Barcelona as a multi-sports club, talk more about Articles 1 and 4, and detail all its related sections such as this article on the men's football team, the women's team (FC Barcelona Femení), basketball (FC Barcelona Bàsquet), and etc. Furthermore, it could then be used in the Template:About hatnote at the top of this article: "For the wider multi–sports club, see FC Barcelona (sports club)" and/or mentioned in the header.
