Notability

[edit]

On 19 July 2017 Premeditated Chaos questioned Bundtzen's notability with a prod, saying:

I don't think this guy hits the bar for encyclopedic notability. There is no SNG for dog racing or the Iditarod, but since he's never come in better than 27th place I doubt he would qualify even if there was one. There is some minor local coverage from the Anchorage press, but nothing wider than that, so no GNG pass either.

I think he does pass GNG. He has run the race 16 times and only scratched twice. Articles indicate that he is a mentor for some newer mushers, for example Mark Selland. He is one of the oldest mushers to run the race. He is one of the mushers selected by Lew Freedman to detail in his 2015 book Iditarod Adventures: Tales from Mushers Along the Trail. I agree that the article needs to be fleshed out more and updated for the current decade. --Bejnar (talk) 15:40, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Premeditated Chaos (PMC). I was about to PROD this one too. I do not think the subject really gets up to GNG for mushing although there is a bit about the subject which is not trivial, but most of it seems to be routine sports reporting, which does not count by itself. There is also a reasonable amount of mentions regarding his infectious diseases occupation. Again mostly routine or promo type material and I think not notable by itself. However combined they might be enough.
Bejnar. This might end up at AfD, so if I may suggest for it to have a stronger case, or avoid AfD altogether, you may wish to do some work on it, and if I can ask for you find some article/s to link to it while you are at it. Being an orphan is why it got my and PMC's attention.

Thanks for the ping, Eno Lirpa. At the time this was de-PROD'd, I remember thinking that appearing in that book might be enough that I thought an AfD might end in a keep, or at least be a hard slog, so I didn't wind up going for it. But on reflection now, I think the book isn't enough on its own - I just did another quick WP:BEFORE and there just aren't any other sources on top of it, and it's basically an interview to boot. So if you want to AfD, I would support deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 10:06, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I might give it a few days and see if Bejnar comes back at all. Eno Lirpa (talk) 11:04, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not all the articles about Bundtzen are from Anchorage see, for example, "An Unforgettable Experience at the Iditarod" from Wisconsin and Rush, D. (2009). "Sled docs. Physicians & the Iditarod: Dr. Bob Bundtzen". Alaska Medicine. 51: 21–23, 26, 38. PMID 19998711.. True most of the articles that are primarily about Bundtzen are from Anchorage, his home town, like the coverage in Horazdovsky, Kortnie (March 7, 2011). "Bundtzen First Musher to Rohn". Channel 2 News (KTUU TV). Archived from the original on May 8, 2013. {{cite news}}: Unknown parameter |dead-url= ignored (|url-status= suggested) (help), but other papers that cover the Iditarod have Bundtzen stories, albeit what one might call "routine news coverage". --Bejnar (talk) 16:07, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Bejnar. The first source seems reasonable enough. There will need to be more if the article ever goes to AFD, but that is not my objective. Are you able to find another article from which you can appropriately link to this article? And if so please do so. Eno Lirpa (talk) 12:35, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Usually, I'd link from one of the various Iditarod articles, like 2005 Iditarod , I picked 2011 because he was more noticed there, but that article hasn't been written. The Iditarod articles are rather spotty, there being only Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, 1925 serum run to Nome, 2006 Iditarod, 2005 Iditarod , 2007 Iditarod, 2008 Iditarod, and 2010 Iditarod. I'll look and see which, if any of those, are appropriate. If in the mood for marginal articles you might want to take a look at Freedom Frog. --Bejnar (talk) 14:54, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Bejnar. Any luck in linking this article in? Freedom Frog, yep a marginal article at best. I have, however, managed to link it in though. (And it was not tagged as an orphan.) My priority at the moment is de-orphan articles. I am not too worried about poor articles unless they a really bad. Eno Lirpa (talk) 11:55, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
