Beijing Sport University (BSU) (Chinese: 北京体育大学) (formerly Beijing University of Physical Education), founded on November 1, 1953,[1] has contributed greatly to the sustainable development of Chinese sport and physical education and has enjoyed the fame as one of the key sport universities in China. Beijing Sport University is also one of the key construction universities in the Project 211 of the people’s republic of china and they are the first universities awarded by the State Council of the Project 211. [2] The project 211, their mission is to prepare our students to become active high-level talents for national economic and social development strategies.[3]
In the past five decades, over 30,000 students of sports-related majors have graduated from BSU. There is a wide-range of academic courses and majors studies, and the number of master and doctoral positions ranks the first among its counterparts in China.
Currently, BSU consists of seven colleges, two elite sports schools and has a large number of qualified teachers, among whom 227 are professors and associate professors. Its excellent staff and facilities can satisfy the needs of teaching, training and scientific research. BSU has established friendly cooperative relations and intercollegiate relations with 28 universities and tens of non-governmental organizations in 16 countries.
BSU was instrumental in the popularization of skateboarding in China.
History
[edit]Beijing Sport University was established in 1953, and was originally know as Central Institute of Physical Education.[4] In 1956, they changing its name to Beijing Institute of Physical Education. Later on, In 1993, they changing its name to Beijing Sport University. Beijing Sport University is located on the Xinxi Road, Haidian District of Beijing and covers a total area of over 89.3 hectares, with a total construction area of 550 thousand square meters.
Academics
[edit]Beijing Sport University is a national key university. The university consists of eight schools and colleges, five departments, two elite sports school that affiliated with the Competitive Sport School and affiliated with Secondary School of Beijing Sport University,three research centre and two sections. Beijing Sport University has a total student around 15,000 students, there are around 7,888 undergraduates students and 2,203 postgraduates students. BSU is a national researching and teaching demonstration centre and one of the key research centre for humanities and social sciences at the province of Beijing. The university also offers PhD Program of Sports Sciences, Professional Master Program of Sports Science and the Higher Education Teaching Program. There are 13 undergraduate programs in the university:sports coaching, social sports, sports science, traditional national sports, public affairs management, sport industry administration, sport journalism, applied psychology, English, sports and performance, sport rehabilitation and recreational sports. Beijing Sport University also provided international exchange program for students exchange between China and the other countries. In addition, there are seven international sport organization leaders such as Jacques Rogge,the President of International Olympic Committee received honorary doctorate degree by the Beijing Sport University.

Famous alumni
[edit]- Xu Haifeng – won the first gold medal for China in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
- Zhang Yining – one of the greatest female table tennis players in the history of the sport.
- Zhou Jihong – won the gold medal in the 10 metre platform event.
- Qian Hong - a former butterfly swimmer from China and two-time Olympic medalist.
- Sun Shuwei - a famous Chinese diver.
- Chen Zhong - won China's first Olympic gold medal in taekwondo at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
- Huang Xu - the oldest member of the Chinese gymnastics team at the 2008 Summer Olympics and won gold in the team final. He also placed sixth in the parallel bars event final.
