First inhabitants of Kiribati

[edit]

I've got Cinderellas of the Empire open in front of me, and on page 1 Macdonald writes that the future Gilbertese "reached the Gilberts perhaps some 4000 or 5000 years ago". However, the book is comparatively "old" (1982), so the hypothesis may be outdated. Interestingly, the government of Kiribati (on the website I linked to) seems to think there was no-one there prior to 1000 AD or later, which seems equally implausible. By contrast, Moarerei Kirion and Bureieta Karaiti, in a chapter of Kiribati: Aspects of History (p.11), write: "There is a growing amount of evidence to prove [...] that the Gilbert Islands have been inhabited for at least 3,000 years, and that the ancient origin of the migrants was Southeast Asia". That time scale would seem to fit with estimated times of discovery of other island groups. If you'd like to remove the hypotheses of Macdonald and of the I-Kiribati government, and reference Aspects of History (or any other source suggesting circa 1000 BC) instead, feel free. It would indeed seem more plausible. Aridd (talk) 22:25, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Paperback, reprint of 1998 (first printed in 1979). It's a collaborative work by 25 I-Kiribati authors, with a very brief foreword by Ieremia Tabai. Have you got any other published histories of Kiribati? I'm not aware of very many. Aridd (talk) 22:50, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a wonderful idea. I wish you the best of luck with it! (And thank you for the link to Tungaru Traditions.) Aridd (talk) 23:06, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Template:Howland Island Locator requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{tranclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As Wikipedia has grown, thousands and thousands of templates have been created. It simply isn't necessary to keep them around. If they are no longer used and no longer needed, they can be deleted. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:34, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I saw your post. I responded. You didn't like my response. What, exactly, do you want from me? I'm not having a protracted debate about the merits of template deletion; I've done it too many times, and I frankly don't have the energy to do it again. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:50, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Breaking point (psychology) - proposed deletion

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Breaking point (psychology), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Breaking point (psychology). KathrynLybarger (talk) 03:20, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Breaking point (psychology), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 03:59, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please leave it as a small "q". You're right, normally proper nouns use capital letters, but if that is how NBC types it, then that is how it should be. It is in the same fashion as the small "i" for i wireless Ctjf83talk 06:01, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So are we discussing if it should be a capital or lowercase "q" or were you just informing me of other incidences? Ctjf83talk 07:53, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I disagree with that MOS, and think it should go by how NBC writes it. Never-the-less, it's also not something I'm going to strongly defend, or even worry about now, so if you want to change it back, you can, and I will leave it Ctjf83Talk 17:38, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, well apparently the show was crap, cause it is already canceled, so I don't care what happens on the page now! Ctjf83Talk 19:07, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Pge.svg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Pge.svg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:27, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Hi Henry W. Schmitt!
We thank you for uploading Image:Flag of Sacramento CA.svg, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Favicon-in-firefox102.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Favicon-in-firefox102.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:18, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Scion svg.svg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Scion svg.svg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Flag width

[edit]

Back in January you commented on Template talk:Infobox Country about the missing flag_width parameter. I ran into the same problem as you did, and hacked the template to reinstate the parameter. I've asked on the template's talk page that my modification be applied to the template, so hopefully it'll be in place soon. In the meantime, you can view the modified template at User:This flag once was red/sandbox2 - it shows two flags side-by-side, with the width for each specified (using flag_width and symbol_width).

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Danger Man episodes, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Danger Man episodes has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Danger Man episodes, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. File permission problem with File:Old Sealand Generator.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Old Sealand Generator.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 21:57, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of Portal:Kiribati

[edit]

Portal:Kiribati, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Kiribati and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Portal:Kiribati during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:27, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Harley-Davidson.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. File source problem with File:Wamu.svg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Wamu.svg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Wcam (talk) 11:29, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
