Spacing

Dear Caius, regarding your recent edit at Somerville College, Oxford, you might find MOS:PUNCTSPACE useful. Software condenses two or more spaces to just one when rendering a page, so editors may use any spacing style they prefer (e.g., a single space or two spaces after a period/full stop). So the double space is valid here, though no more or less so than single spacing, and the end result as to what is displayed is identical. That should save you a bit of time.

Hi Cauis!

It seems the birthdate is incorrectly mentioned as "(born September 23, 1976[1][2][3]) ". The sources for this do not seem reliable.

The first one does not have a mention for his birthdate. The second link does not work And the third link has the incorrect birthdate, but it also incorrectly mentions that his birthplace is Stockport which it's not. It's Salford.

The correct birthdate is September 13, 1976. I'll be happy to provide you with sources.

Regarding 'List of most-viewed YouTube channels'

Hello Caius G. You had recently left a message on my talk page regarding my change in the article List of most-viewed YouTube channels and you had said that I didn't add proper citations for the information. Yes, I agree I did not add it on myself but the citations for all the channels youtube pages- as far as I checked- was already added, so I decided to let it be and updated the views because it is a dynamic list after all. Caius G. I am really sorry that was my mistake, it was an error on my side. I will look into it to fix it but the problem is I had fixed it for so many channels and had changed there positions as recently, some channels had surpassed others. Reuben College, Oxford

Hi, just to let you know that your edit to the Reuben College article added content between a reference and the assertions which the reference supports. This is not recommended (see WP:INTEGRITY) as it implies that your content is supported by the original reference. I have not checked the Telegraph reference, but when it was added the planned first entry of students was 2020 not 2021. I have resolved the issue by moving the information you added. Hi Emicho's Avenger, sorry for being a bit blunt in reverting your (surely good faith!) edit, the article had experienced quite some disruption over the last time so I didn't give it too much thought. I appreciate you taking the time to reach out!
Regarding your first edit: "Who has been called" implies that the claims of Fuentes' political beliefs are doubtful or heavily contested (see MOS:CLAIM for a better explanation). Given that plenty reliable sources call him as a white nationalist, it is safe to directly say that he is one. WP:WIKIVOICE describes the distinction between "X is Y" and "X is called/described/alleged to be Y" in more detail. Nonetheless, "is" vs "is widely called" is a debate that comes up often, see Adolf Hitler's talk page for frequent discussions on if he is evil or only widely described as such, similarly, I don't believe that any BLP directly describes their subject as "racist", usually substituting it with "widely described as" and the like.
"Despite being described as being white nationalist, AFPAC 2021 had multiple speakers of colour. (YT link)" irks me because it implies ("despite") that having multiple non-white speakers contradicts its characterisation of being white nationalist. However, being a white nationalist does not imply blind hatred of people of colour. Even if hosting poc speakers contradicted its characterisation of being white nationalist, you would need sources that describe it as contradiction. Otherwise, it would be original research. General example of original research: If source X says that A, and source Y says that if A then B, adding B to an article would be original research. You would need a source Z saying that B. In this case, you would need a source explicitly calling it a contradiction.
Your edit replacing "political commentator" with "hosts a political commentary show" doesn't bother me too much, I didn't need to revert it - but it does seem a bit wordy.
This all seems needlessly complicated and there are countless instances of OR and POV on this project, but given the topic's political salience, I believe that it is important to adhere to these principles. I hope this helps! Happy editing, Caius G. (talk) 21:13, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Moors from spain

Hello, I deleted the word Moors from Spain and noticed that you have repeated it. I think playing with history is nothing worse than it. The word "moors" has nothing to do with dark skinned-Africans at all Xasazx123 (talk) 12:36, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

Xasazx123, I agree, people usually view those from Northern Africa as not "black", but something else. Perhaps "is black" should be replaced with "has dark skin" or "is dark-skinned". Thanks for reviewing my article Draft:Schools of Opportunity a few days ago. The Wikipedia article was denied due to lack of 3rd party sources. You left me a note saying "The Washington Post is also not independent, because they seem to be somehow affiliated with the program, even though the fact that they announce the decision is not sourced by the inline citations provided?" I reviewed these sources and found that Valerie Strauss, the reporter that decided to publish the article is not affiliated with the organization, but the organization it's self wrote sections of the article. Does that count as a third party source? Again, many thanks for reviewing my article, I thought it was going to take months but you did it in a week, thanks! Justiyaya, thanks for quickly getting back to improving your draft and bringing this up. I was mistakenly assuming that the (unsourced) fact that the Washington Post announces the winners means that they sponsor it, given that media committing themselves to make announcements on behalf of another entity are usually affiliated with it, although exceptions, e.g., Rhodes Scholarship winners' media coverage in the US, exist. Junior contributors comment completion rate across all participating Wikipedias
When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

That is not the wp rule. You are free to do it. But not correct when you assert what others "should" do. You are either misstating wp policy, or stating your personal subjective preference as a "should." Please read wp:burden. That I do so should be obvious, if I believed it to be policy, I would have left out the "should". Nowhere do I support adding unverified material, I support adding material and adding sources. Henley & Partners

Hi 15! We were recently chatting at Talk:Henley & Partners#Resolving UPE issues, where I proposed a UPE-free version of the article and then incorporated your two helpful comments into that draft. I would really appreciate it if you could go ahead and implement the proposed changes, so we can hopefully take a big step closer toward cleaning up this mess for good.

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Joe Gebbia title correction

Hello! Based on some of your posts at WikiProject Edit Requests, I am hoping you might be able to assist me with a fairly simple edit request at Talk:Joe Gebbia, which I've submitted on behalf of Airbnb. In short, I'm trying to correct Joe Gebbia by adding mention of his current roles. A couple editors assisted with the infobox request but seem uninterested in reviewing the most recent suggestion for the article body. One editor prefers to see sourcing which confirms when his role changed, but I don't agree the date is needed to clarify his current and former roles. Might you be able to take a look?
