Wikimedia Canada

[edit]

Hi there! I'd like to invite you to explore Wikimedia Canada, and create a list of people interested in forming a local chapter for our nation. A local chapter will help promote and improve the organization, within our great nation. We'd also like to encourage everyone to suggest projects for our national chapter to participate in. Hope to see you there!--DarkEvil 01:27, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, and have a wiki wiki day! BD2412 T 04:18, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. On Talk:Straza, you said that "A good part of this text seems to be an automatic translation of http://www.banatul.com/info/town-straja.shtml (German) which is copyrighted." I was wondering why you think this. The page doesn't seem to be in German (except for the footnotes), and it looks like Czech to me. Do you know the language? [edit]

Hi. I'm doing a survey of Wikipedia editors as part of a class research project. It's quick, anonymous, and the data will be made available to the Wikipedia community later this month. Would you like to take part? More info here. Thanks! Nonplus 23:42, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DoCB Initiative

[edit]

I came across a couple of articles that you had done in the above arena. Nice job! I have done quite a few over the last few months and was pleased to see someone else active. (I think most of mine are "stubbier"). I have been verifying the ones I do in the DoCB initiative despite the warning. I think that whole thing is dead and no one has removed the tags..cheers! Thanks for updating some of 'my' (as Lady Earth) pages! Where did you find the info on C. T. Bate? I had an impossible time finding what little info I did manage to scrape together. Editor at Large 01:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:SharpshinnedHawk23.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jkelly 19:53, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for Adding that reference to that John Winslow Article it was a big help

Hi! I'm looking for an opinion/direction on the above article. It is a redirect from Patrick Sinclair which is now forms part of the title article. Could you take a look? I know that you do a lot of DoCB editing. I think that Patrick Sinclair should be a separate article. I would appreciate an opinion on what should be done (if anything). Thanks in advance for your assistance. Stormbay 03:22, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot boo-boos? boo-hoo!

[edit]

Sorry about those. I see you fixed Francis Jones (Canadian politician) (for which, thanks): that would have been a very hard one for the 'bot to have done any better on, as he was in a Quebec category, and no Ontario ones. (I suppose it's partly a matter of how one reads "Quebec politician" (etc).) If you see any more, do let me know, especially if there's a large number of similar ones that I can use the 'bot to fix. Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada

[edit]

Thomas-Pierre-Joseph Taschereau the brother of Jean-Thomas Taschereau also appears to have been a member of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada. I took a quick look for the riding but didn't find it. (Quite an undertaking you are on; looks good to date!). I blue linked Francis Badgley in the 3rd leg. Cheers! No problem

[edit]

The revert was so long ago I'd completely forgotten! Bird of the week was a first-winter Whiskered Tern (quite rare in the UK) which would disappear for long periods and then hawk up and down the lagoon bank within 20 m. I managed to get a half-decent photo of it perched, but there are some terrific flight shots on surfbirds.com. jimfbleak 06:04, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Legislative Council of Lower Canada

[edit]

Just a query since, thanks to you, I am now alert to the two different bodies, (assembly vs. council) that existed. I noticed the start date for many of the appointees to be listed as 1792. I was disambiguating François Baby and the DoCB article lists his appointment at 1778. I gather that all of this flows out of the Quebec Act of 1774. Would someone have used 1792 as an arbitrary date to start the article? I won't change anthing until I have an opinion. Thanks in advance! Stormbay 20:56, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a reminder...when referring to CBC Television in an article, could you please write [[CBC Television]] instead of "[[Canadian Broadcasting Corporation|CBC]] television"? Thanks. Bearcat 10:54, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Paschal Sirois-Duplessis

[edit]

Your note on Paschal Sirois-Duplessis in the 2nd Parliament of Lower Canada indicates his death as 1798. One source I read says: November 14, 1797: Paschal Sirois-Duplessis (CAN), MHA for Cornwallis, dies in office. I was reluctant to change it without checking with you. Cheers! Edward Greive

[edit]

Edward Greive from the 2nd Parliament of the Province of Canada is listed in a DoCB bio [1] for George Baptist as Edward Greives. It is not necessarily a definitve source, but it could be changed, if you agree. No need to reply; I'll watch. Stormbay 23:41, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moving Robert McGhee

[edit]

Hey; I saw you move Robert McGhee to Robert McGhee (minister); I moved it back, not knowing that the move was done in the first place (i.e. that the article wasn't originally named (minister). I see that you have moved it back to (minister) once again and I think that decision makes sense. Sorry to fuddle that all up. Shagmaestro 03:10, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Which one is this?

[edit]

I noticed a reference in some material that I was reading regarding a legislative council with its inception in August 1775 (and, I presume running until 1791). What was it called? Do we have an article in wiki on it? I know I should be able to figure this out but it is easier to ask you. Thanks in advance. --Stormbay 22:58, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

French spellings

[edit]

I know that you edit a lot of Canadian stuff and probably can answer this question. Is there a policy to anglicize French names? I ran into Michel Bégon de la Picardière becoming Michel Bégon and finally Michel Begon. If this is a generally accepted practice, I will disagree and ignore. If it is a form of vandalism, I will do something. Sorry to bother you but I do not pay much attention to stuff that isn't posted where I usually edit. Thanks in advance and feel free to tell me to bother someone else. --Stormbay 00:15, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have perfomed a web search with the contents of 9th Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: 8th Legislative Assembly of Ontario. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 22:23, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, actually, good bot. The articles were very close copies; but it can't guess that they were legitimate very close copies.  :-) Don't hesitate to just go ahead and remove the tag. — Coren (talk) 22:30, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

William R. Higgins article

[edit]

I saw the William R. Higgins article that you created a few years ago. Do you have any tips about notability? I've written an article about Lansing Bennett which is going to be deleted for lack for notability (see comments http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Lansing_Bennett ). Bennett was killed in the 1993 attack on the CIA, sometimes noted as the first incident of Islamic terrorism in North America. If Bennett is judged to be not notable, Higgins is similarly at risk. Again, I am not canvassing but merely asking for your advice on achieving notability. Mrs.EasterBunny 16:34, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I just noticed that when you created Accipiter, you left out the Chilean Hawk, Accipiter chilensis. Some authorities consider it a subspecies of the Bicolored Hawk, but HBW considers it a full species. Since we usually go with HBW, could you tell me why you decided not to in this case? I know nothing about the species and have no preference—I'm just wondering. —JerryFriedman 22:06, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Legislative Assemblies

[edit]

Just so you know, I've now created a navbox template, {{PEI Assemblies}}, to replace the succession boxes on PEI General Assembly articles, as well as a distinct category, Category:Prince Edward Island General Assemblies, for them. The navbox is generally the standard for this kind of thing now, rather than succession boxes, although so far they only exist for PEI, Quebec and Alberta — I'll be creating the others as I have time. So if you do any more PEI assemblies, please use the new template and category instead of a succession box and Category:Politics of Prince Edward Island. Thanks. Is there any chance of expansion or improvement for this article? I have to say, given that none of the other reeves has an article, his notability looks really borderline, but I wanted to ask you about the article before I send it to AfD or anything drastic. Choess 16:20, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll just leave it be, then — I've left plenty of stubby articles on politicians to fill out lists and so forth (albeit at the national level) and I also have a long backlog of intended projects. If you think you can improve it in the future, I'm not going to force your hand by sending it to AfD. Thanks for responding. Choess 14:59, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anson Dodge

[edit]

A history of the Georgian Bay Lumber Company 1871-1942 (Anson Greene Phelps Dodge) "A Deo Victoria" by James T. Angus, an interesting read. Angus claims Dodge came to Canada by the invitation of Henry W. Sage (though Angus quoted incorrect informarion about Sage and McGraw). The author points out that Dodge purchased mills in Georgian Bay area including new mill constructed at Byng Inlet, (Ontario) with no mention of how Dodge came to select that area. Also, Angus fails to mention of Atherly mill mentioned in 1868 Orillia newspaper, or his purchase of timber berths in Oakley township. Angus does point out Dodge's involvement as a silent partner in Thomson and Millar's Longford Lumber Company at Longford Mills, Ontario, and the purchase of the Longford Township timber berths. One key point in James T. Angus' story, was: upon departure of Bell Ewart, Ontario (Sage's mill), Dodge travelled on a regular ferry from Orillia to Washago Mills.

James T. Angus also had some confusion with John Thomson of Longford Mills and Thompson Smith and Company, concerned with sawmilling at Bradford, Ontario, Mr. Smith's first name was Thompson, see Rama Timber Transport Company. Regarding the purchase of the Longford township timber, Randy Richmomd, author of "The Orillia Spirit" claims no one knew the value of the timber as much as John Thomson, but fails to mention how Thomson became so knowledgeable.

Brookes Wright Gossage was the surveyor that was in charge of the surveys for the Canadian Land and Emigration Company, including Longford township, of which Gossage surveyed himself. In 1856 Gossage (under the direction of Walter Shanly), had been involved with a survey (of timber) along the Magnetawan River from Byng Inlet to Opeongo Lake. Following the survey of Longford in 1864, Gossage purchased a small steamboat and placed it in service on Lake Couchiching, between Orillia and Washago and was the operator of this service when Anson Dodge first visited Sage's mill at Bell Ewart.

Walter Shanly's survey, including that information compiled by Mr. B. W. Gossage was published in the 1857 Journals of the Legislative Assembly of Canada, as appendix No. 5.

You list Carl Mooers here. In the 1967 election there were four members elected for York County who appear in the list for the 45th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly. However, in the list for the 46th Assembly three of the four elected remain (2-York, 2-Fredericton) but Weldon Lawrence's name was replaced by Carl Mooers. However, the Assembly's "Tribute" on Weldon Lawrence's death in 2000 says he served until 1970 (the year of the election). Could you recheck your source information for the 46th Assembly as I want to do a brief bio for Weldon Lawrence. Thank you. Jonathan Logan (talk)

Thanks for the help. Would you mind checking your guide for the 43rd New Brunswick Legislative Assembly where it lists only three members from Charlotte County. In the 41st, 42nd and 44th, 45th (and probably most others) have four. Jonathan Logan (talk) 16:43, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The bio says he was an MLA from 1892 to 1899 but he shows up again in the 33rd, 34th, and the 35th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly meaning he served again from 1912-1930. Would you mind checking your records. Thanks, you're doing a great job getting these NB MLAs done. Jonathan Logan (talk) 14:23, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yor bio says: "He served on the council for Northumberland County." That is possible as he might have lived there for a time but would you mind double-checking your source. He was born in Westmorland County and was the MLA from Shediac in the Westmorland County. Jonathan Logan (talk) 15:44, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother you again but could you check your sources for Ernest Richard's time in office. In Premier Graham's 2006 memorial address to the Legislative Assembly he said:

"He was a Liberal MLA and represented the County of Gloucester from his first election by acclamation in 1948 until his retirement in 1970. "

The University of Moncton also says he served 1948-1970. He is not listed on Wikipedia's 41st New Brunswick Legislative Assembly (March 5, 1949 and July 16, 1952) and would have had to be part of it if he was elected by acclamation in 1948. I wonder if maybe his acclamation was for a newly-created fifth seat for the Gloucester riding which does show up with five members (same four from the 41st plus Richard) beginning in Wikipedia's 42nd New Brunswick Legislative Assembly. Thanks again. Jonathan Logan (talk) 14:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm moving images of birds to the Commons at the moment and noticed you uploaded this one, and are still active here. Rather than trying to move every image myself (I will move this one), I think it's a lot more effective if I can get others to take up the activity themselves (and get them to spread the word, and so on). Even if you have been uploading to Commons all the time recently, please consider going through some of your old uploads and moving them to Commons (check your contributions under images), even if it's just one every now and again. The CommonsHelper makes it very easy to do. Richard001 (talk) 00:44, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dictionary of Canadian Biography

[edit]

I wrote an e-mail to the DCB the minute I discovered they had moved from IIS/ASP to Apache/PHP and broken ALL THE LINKS. I told them I could not imagine that it could be a technical challenge for them to write a simple Apache rewrite rule so that all the old URL requests would redirect to the new URLs. I was replied:

Hello Mr. Gauthier-Pilote,

I have spoken with our Technical Services group, as well as our Web Services group, regarding your suggestions for redirect re-writes for bookmarked biographies (ASP to PhP) from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online (DCB).

Your suggestions are taken under advisment, and could be implemented, however Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is currently engrossed in a site-wide conversion to Treasury Board (TB), Common Look and Feel 2 (CLF2) standards http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/clf2-nsi2/clfs-nnsi/clfs-nnsi-3-eng.asp

Our technical resources are maxed out at the moment, and unfortuanately, we are unable to estimate a timeline as to if or when we would be able to revisit this particular issue in the near future.

LAC appreciates your comments and suggestions, and apologizes any inconvenience that the DCB site updates may cause.

Regards,

Consequently, I invite you to e-mail them as well so they feel pressure from the public and actually do the job. Maybe we can even find a programmer among Wikipedia users who has real Apache experience and is able to write the rule off the top of his/her head? If we had the code, what excuse not to do it could they possibly come up with? -- Mathieugp (talk) 23:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I guess a RewriteMap directive might be what we need. I am just discovering now that math does not appear to be really possible in the Apache rewrite rule lingo (unless I missed something).
